Steve just released v 1.7.0

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909263

I have not been using 1.6.0 due to some apps incompatible with his Gingerbread changes. When I select menu on these apps - I see only black selection boxes. Anyway I upgraded to 1.7 from 1.5.1 - took only 7 minutes. I noted he has taken away the Gingerbread black-like menu. The Dell seems zippier - haven't noticed any serious bugs so far. He has incorporated some  Dell Streak 7 ( the 7' tablet ) features - check up his log on changes

Hi Benny, how is your experience with 1.7.0 so far? worth the upgrade?

YES . I find it much better than 1.6.0, 1,6.1 which I use olny less than a day. However I find his new fonts too refine and small. So I reflash it by replacing the fonts in his zip file with fonts from 1.6.1
Till today already few days , yet to notice any serious bugs. There is a very minor bug, sometimes the notification  screen is display when you swipe across  screens. Just press home button it disappears

My most important requirement especially 3G is great i find better than 1.5.1

BTW I noticed Zeam launcher works better with his rom than ADW and Launcxher Pro. The latter 2 launches I noted need 1-2 secs to redraw screen views when restart and reboot from idle
thanks smile.gif glad to know 3G is better. I don't know how is your case, but sometimes mine still can automatically switch to 3G when there's no wifi (sometimes it does). I have to manually go refresh the mobile network.

btw, will the apps (SD and non-SD) still there when you flash it? blush.gif

Can be use as modem or not? Found one seller here selling Dell Streak 8GB for RM1899 while 16GB is RM1999  rclxub.gif
so confusing.

You are right, ive been using most of my phone and not claiming any warranty at all. and specs its all just my satisfactions.  drool.gif
8.9/10 is not bad at all compared to galaxy s and iphone(which not my taste) Actually its my first time to try android phone. Ive been using symbian, windows and bb for quite long enough. and my first android im thinking of is streak.
Can it become a modem? Lagging or not?  hmm.gif
*
yupe...tethering and mobile hotspot are feasible.

my opinion is, response is of course not as smooth as iphone / ipad. But you won't really feel it unless u compare it next to each other. The speed is always there, with the 1GHz processor i think it's more than enough. iOS devices are still the best in terms of responsiveness, but for the advantage and "completeness" it has over iOS, more than worth it.

i agree with Benny, depends on your need, not wants. If u need >2 multi-touch, go for iPad. Dell Streak support only 2 touches. Also, if you use it to play drum (example: Musical Lite), there's a lag in response. U can't play like a pro drummer tongue.gif

Added on February 22, 2011, 1:16 pmHi guys,

whenever I update some of the apps from the market, it says "Update Unsuccessful for "APPNAME", and unknown error 18.

Do you know what's the reason?

Unmount your SDCard, install the updates then mount it back. Should be no problem.

Let me guess, Angry Birds?

cool... managed to update them...thanks.
then do i need to move them to SD card manually?

Angry Bird is among them...there are more than a dozen of them, including Google Goggles, Evernote, Air Control Lite.....

DEFINITELY. My previous unit was on 1.6. I upgraded it to 2.1 than to Froyo 2.2

Added on March 12, 2011, 9:46 pm
This happens when you are installing a incompatible version. Download the correct version ( it is free )  from the PAID apps Market and do not use any others freely available from the web ( you know what I mean ). I faced same problem cos I took easy way out and try to use an old apk from my previous Nexus
*
Hi Benny,

Do you mean different version of Skype? I thought there's only one Skype available... i just searched on the Market again (faked as T-Mobile), there's only one Skype.

Ask the users , not read some website comments. I can tell you that this is avery good smartphone . It is the only one in its class with 5". The poor reviews were basically when it was launched with Android 1.6. Now it is officially available on 2.2 - it is a world of difference. I rate a score of 8 to 9 for this Dell Streak
*
indeed. it's coming to 3 months now I use Dell Streak. I'd say very good experience with it. I started with Android 1.6 also, but even that was surprisingly good for me initially.
Size does matter, and for good reason. Now when I look at an IP4 or even a Desire HD in hand, just feel the screen is too congested.

Anyway, if there are anything "bad",
1. being less popular, you don't find accessories as easily as Apple or HTC products (not an issue at all for me)
2. being less popular, you are lower in the update list of some apps, e.g. Tango, compared to Nexus S and SGT (if you really need to Tango)
3. Screen resolution not as fantastic as IPhone4 (just another WOW factor that doesn't concern many people)

Yes , just use the Market version. There are many other versions in the web  -mostly extracted out from other phones. Somehow such versions most of it will not work
*
Benny,

Yes I do use the Market version. Anyway, to reconfirm it, i just uninstalled, cleared market cache (not sure if necessary), re-downloaded and reinstalled Skype again. But still, it shows only "signing in" but never get signed in.

Use root explorer ( at top select RW mode ) browse to system locate build.prop file hold down right click n select open in text editor. Browse down and find entry lcd density change value to 180 up to 240 increments of 10. Ideal value 210. Default is 160. Save file n reset
ADW launcher EX has icon size change built-in too but the font size does not change
Manual edits is the best way to have icon size change and the fonts sizes will increase accordingly
*
one thing to note is, when you change to LCD Densidty 240, everything becomes bigger, including the Number Pad for you to key in you PIN code. It happened to me when I was trying to flash new ROM with 240, the Num Pad showed only the top 2 rows. So I couldn't tap number 7 8 9 and * 0 # blush.gif

Did you clear your dalvik cache, wipe cache partition before you flash 1.8.1 . Try do these steps again from recovery. Your data will not be wiped unless you select wipe data/factory reset

These issues are at times attributed to restore of apps from esp Titanium Backup. Stephen's roms I do read at XDA several  users do complain about such. So my golden rules in flashing /updating Stephen's roms has always being : wipe those as described PLUS wipe data/factory reset. After a successful install, I go to recovery mode and select factory reset again. These steps will wipe clean the phone. Than I do a manual  Restore apps/data with MyBackupPro which I find is better than TB. TB tends to give such sudden reset issues plus force closures - I could be wrong on TB but that's what I have narrow it down. I have tested several times such methods just for the sake of testing to identify cause of sudden reboots, force closures
Till now I still consider 1.5.1 the best and most stable rom - I have practically close to  zero issues with it
QUOTE(Noobi3 @ Mar 28 2011, 05:41 PM)
+ 1

Try not to use Nandroid or TB to backup your files , restoring it later . It might cause FC . Easiest method to do it , : Astro File Manager > Settings > Tools > Application Manager/Backup . From there backup the apps from your current rom . U can try " SMS Backup+ " , a free apps from the market to store your sms and logs . Do a factory reset , wipe dalvik cache under " Advance " in CWM and " cache partition " and Reboot it . Once it's reboot , turn it off again and go to recovery , install the new rom , reinstall Astro file manager and going back to Application Manager , u will have a list of apps from your previous rom .... So far , I got zero FC or auto reboot in 1.8.1 or .1.9.0 .....
*
Thanks...I'll try
do i have to revert back to "good" ROM (was on 1.5.3) first to do backup? Will I backup unstable apps if i do it on my current 1.8.1?

I also feel 1.5.1 best... even 1.5.3 got some bugs, especially FC when incoming calls. But there are some nice things on 1.5.3 onwards, like the Select Text bracket

Apps is ok .....just that when we use Nandroid or TB , it copied more than apps alone and that's y its giving prob .... Personally , i feel 1.8.1 is better than 1.9.0 but if u ask me to compare 1.5.1 to 1.8.1 , i rather go 1.8.1 as i dun have any prob . Also , did u choose "perfmod" ? seem some users r having prob after selection this option
*
QUOTE
perfmod is not even recommended by Stephen but is an option to those who wishes to have it. It is a mix bag of comments on perfmod - I'd say avoid using it
flashed to 1.8.1 now, done with most apps restored, except a few (angry birds, which I don't mind), and widgets like Fancy Widget wasn't restored. So far so good.
Some apps even restored with settings preserved, like my gestures in Dolphin browser. But most others only apps, no setting. Haven't encounter any self-restart yet.
got SMS restored too, using SMS Backup+. Surprisingly good with Gmail biggrin.gif

now might wanna flash it again with higher screen density. I still like the 1.5.x fonts, 1.6.x onwards very thin and too small.

I didn't choose perfmod, what is it by the way?

Thanks Benny888 and Noobi3!

on the home screen, just tap Menu -> Settings -> About Phone
you can try ADWLauncher (or any other launcher), might give you a fresh look of your phone

benny, if lets say my ext SD card is 16gb which come with the package, is that 16gb plus the inbuilt storage of 16gb become 32gb? cos when i check the SD card & phone storage settings, i only can see SD Card- total space - 14.82GB & Internal phone storage - available space 1.24GB now..so is tat mean ext SD card is not display in there?
*
SD Card here is considered the external storage. So you only get 16GB + 2GB of internal memory anyway.
to get 32GB, you need 32GB SD
