i use it to tether 3g umobile running in n900 with my ipod touch 2g via the wireless.

I think any phone that support wireless should be able to connect to the MobileHotSpot.
*
did you do any special settings? what happens now is the netbook could detect the SSID but not nexus one. why is that? anyone knows?

does n900 with mobile hotspot actually allow you to tether to other phones? or you just think?

according to this LINK, "Tethering" is the use of your cell phone -- or other Internet-enabled mobile device -- as a modem for another device, usually a notebook or PDA.

funny none of the tethering software/application i've come across specifically mentioned tethering to other smartphones, they only state "other devices". which raises my doubt whether does tethering really work using infrastructure tech to other branded smartphones. so is Tethering actually ad hoc tech? that's because the netbook/notebook recognizes it as computer-to-computer security enabled wifi connection.

Andy? Eiraku?

QUOTE(Eiraku @ Jun 22 2010, 01:49 AM)
For the N900, "Tethering" here refers to a redirection of the cellular packet data connection to WIFI using ad-hoc networking (as the N900 does not support Infra mode - yet). Or at least that's how it's done using Mobile Hot Spot (not sure about Joiku). As that, I'm not even sure we can call it "Tethering".

Was able to share my net with an E71 and an Ipod touch through the 5800 and Joiku before, but have not tried with the N900 besides with my laptop.  But I do remember my friend's BB Bold not being able to connect through the 5800 Joiku before this, so I'd say some smartphones (and OSes...) are just darned sensitive about what kind of WIFI settings you use to connect.

Heck, there are reports of 5800s, N97s, Iphones and even N900s not playing nice with WIFI routers as well (which is clearly Infra) due to settings, security and whatnot... hmm.gif

So, as far as I know, the N900's net sharing is done through an Ad Hoc connection. IINM, Joiku works that way too, so maybe it's just the N1 not accepting certain Ad Hoc settings the N900 uses - like my friend's BB Bold.

YMMV
*
yea bro. n1 refuses all kinds of ad hoc WiFi up to 2.1. (unless you tweak their texas instrument .ini file) and also pretty sure the same goes to all BB and other sensitive smartphones. let's just see if 2.2 fixes that as the official update log stated "USB and WiFi tethering capability".

i hope mobile hotspot gets updated with infrastructure mode as well one day, then it will be gold!

I haven't done any of this, plus I heard it consumes a lot of battery.

Have you tried JoikuSpot?
*
yeah a battery sucker. but it kind of useful if you need an urgent tethering and has handful of third party batteries lying around. wink.gif

also, has not tried joikuspot yet.

Moved the dpkg cache (for those interested it's the whole /var/lib/dpkg directory and everything in it) to /home/var_lib_dpkg/ and symlinked. Instantly freed 9MBs from root and everything's still working fine. Hopefully no more "ghost files" filling up my root.

*
it is okay delete the history of those uninstalled applications or "ghost files" in this /var/lib/dpkg directory? via openssh or things like that.

i so feel like to deleting them grrr.

to be honest, i kinda like the the UI. clean and organised. and these mascots are cuter than the androidbot heh!

come this october with at least release candidate, i think i will be a convert for sure.

i know maemo is great but if meego is the next spotlight of the show, things dont spell doom at least for some time am i right?

That's why I said, it felt different from Maemo. So why replace Maemo?
Perhaps they can consider replace Symbian? No point having 2 alike/similar products. But then, Symbian is also their core product, there're many users, and many apps, companies developing apps, etc. unlike Maemo, which they can easily ditch off or wash hands. They don't even want to give any news about Flash 10.1 for Maemo, altough it's quite obvious there isn't one as it's not even listed.
*
i can see why they set to replace maemo. not because maemo is not good. it's all business at the end of the day.

why? ask nokia-intel. dont forget maemo is fully nokia so could it be contract and agreement stating meego has to be the main player because intel collaborated? i dont know. it may be, may not be.

anyway come next quarter, n900 users will be segregated into maemo users and meego users, you cant stop that. maybe dual boot users too. wink.gif you can keep maemo in n900 and purchase the new meego device too if you wish. biggrin.gif

plus, nobody claims meego is going to be official OS for n900. maemo still is and always is flagship OS for nokia tablet phones. remember, nokia doesnt support meego officially, and so it will void your warranty. (well lol)

look at maemo now, it is fully community driven; apps-wise, even ovi store are mostly third party apps.

It's all about the money people. Bigger userbase = more commercial interest = more commercial apps. That's all there is to it. As for the N900, yes it's purely Nokia's fault for doing a dang ass job at:

streamlined

this is not a hate post. but i pretty damn agree with everything you lamented in the quoted post above. however, it's not only the marketing, platform abandoning, and lack of software support.

even this n900 thread has been slowing down.

my wife owns both nexus one and n900. she was really excited with n900 initially until she met nexus one. now she wants to get rid of n900 already. even surfing on nexus 1 feels better. and what can the n900 do that nexus one can't do other than the nature of "openness"? especially comparing the SUPPORT from both manufacturers? Nokia has made absolutely ZERO announcement on their next patch, update or etc. but knowing Nokia, it could be another LONG WAIT or judging the situation now(maemo is set to replaced by meego), could be none at all. but of course, take this view of mine with a pinch of salt or you can totally forget about this.

i want to support n900 maemo. i want to support nokia, my first device was nokia, and loved nokia ever since their genius symbian platform was released on soap phone 6600, then 6630. but like someone said, Nokia needs to wake the hell up! after this experience with nokia, there's is simply no way for people to trust their next devices. unless the first two meego devices went incredibly well, maybe only people will start paying attention to them again. look what they did to N8 even before the device is released to the market. lol. the competition from Android, Apple and recently Bada... can Nokia pull it off with meego? i really doubt so. it's too android-ish, fanboys will make fun of it as android clones. so my bet is on android OS which will dominate the sales chart coming next fiscal year 2011. just wait and see. it could be htc android, google android, samsung android as long as android.

i've tried both Galaxy S and iPhone4 yesterday, i believe my love to nokia is dying faster than a light could travel. laugh.gif

lastly, props out to Datawiz for their daring approach to release games for n900! because i would not do that. :/ but i will not be buying Spin, yet before i finished ZenBound.

@Eiraku

ironic indeed. the solution to maemo is actually killing it at the same time. predicament.

with that said, i contradicted myself now. i've got spin, and it's freaking hard lol

Actually Nokia did the opposite. They DIDN'T promote this at all.Al least in Malaysia.

i think that's Nokia Malaysia's fault. look at HK, India and Taiwan. their launch events were kinda interesting actually.
