Will still wait for post-release reviews really, I remember seeing some "look what our AI can do" videos for Empire too (yes, I keep my grudges like a Dwarf, my avatar isnt just for show ^^) and it ended up being pretty crap anyway.
I still think Shogun warfare is much easier to code from AI point of view though so there is hope. Looking forward to it coming out still, just hope they don't spend all their time making shiny graphics I will never look at (since I am always zoomed out at max during battles really) instead of fixing bugs and improving AI/gameplay This post has been edited by Gormaz: Sep 4 2010, 01:33 PM |

Yeah. But hey they've got a new Lead AI Programmer, Ingmar GUdmunsson now. So I can see they are trying. On the battle videos, you cant really judge anything from them. They are often just a slice of one battle and CA has been known to do scripted battles. The test will be playing through the near final release.I still think Shogun warfare is much easier to code from AI point of view though so there is hope. Warning BIG campaign pictures in spoiler:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « First image points out its very similar to the previous Total War games where you had farms and other smaller towns(or villages in this case) outside the main city(in this case the castle). The interface is a little unclear and there are certain things I haven't figured out. Second image shows what looks like a fog of war that looks like a cloth map. Not sure how this works. Perhaps reading this preview: http://pc.ign.com/articles/111/1119498p1.html Would shed some light. Will write feedback after reading that preview. |

Really lots of good stuff showing up really, I am really keeping my finger crossed CA won't mess up this one, them coming back to medieval Japan is really more in their field than 18th Century
The style is really beautiful too But definitely will wait for post-release to hear from forum impressions, I won't trust anything coming from CA or review websites anymore for a Total War title. Please please CA.... /pray This post has been edited by Gormaz: Sep 14 2010, 04:58 PM |

Don't bother reading the preview I posted. It's rubbish. The only new thing it says is there is a new general upgrade tree. You can upgrade them as they level up. Plus they brought back the old your generals can become rebels feature.

Shogun 2 won't be released "until the AI is perfect"
QUOTE In an interview with Gameplanet, Creative Assembly community manager Craig Laycock addresses fans' concerns about the newest iteration of their large-scale warfare strategy series, Total War. In particular, he talks about their previous struggles with AI programming and what they're doing to change that this time around: GP: Battle AI has been a thorn in the side of the Total War series since its inception. What improvements can players familiar with the series expect? Craig: Mike Simpson, our creative director, has basically said 'this game is not going out the door until the AI is perfect'. AI really has been a bit of an issue for us in the past. But even Napoleon was better than Empire. I mean, one of our goals for Napoleon was to fix the issues we had in Empire, and I think to an extent we did that really well. But in terms of Shogun 2 we're not going to release it until it's perfect. There's the line-of-sight stuff we're introducing - basically, if any of our designers are playing the game and see something stupid, it's like everyone stops. Everyone gets around the PC to have a look at it, and see what can we do to fix it. We want to get it so there's nothing stupid happening in the game. We don't want to see stupid AI. It is a big thorn in our side, and it's something we've really had to work on. We're pretty confident about Shogun 2. Spotted on VG247. Source: Firing Squad |

Meh, Shogun 2 is the new Duke Nukem Forever if they really apply this...
I will be content with an AI that knows how to siege properly and at least pretend to notice the cavalry unit I just slipped behind their line waiting to charge them in once both lines are engaged. Good that at least they acknolewdge Empire AI issues but I heard that pretty music on Empire's release, waiting for this, but will wait for post-release reviews from forums and co |

QUOTE(Gormaz @ Oct 20 2010, 09:41 AM) Meh, Shogun 2 is the new Duke Nukem Forever if they really apply this... Well, at least now they have a reason to turn to the Eastern battle strategies but isn't Sun Tzu from China? I will be content with an AI that knows how to siege properly and at least pretend to notice the cavalry unit I just slipped behind their line waiting to charge them in once both lines are engaged. Good that at least they acknolewdge Empire AI issues but I heard that pretty music on Empire's release, waiting for this, but will wait for post-release reviews from forums and co QUOTE In many ways, the teachings of Sun Tzu simplify the rules of battles into a series of bullet points. For example: if the enemy is much stronger than your forces, run away very quickly. You can apply that to the battle as a whole, or to individual units - and we've done this with each of Sun Tzu's concepts. QUOTE Naval combat in Shogun 2 is completely coastal, in line with the time period -so oceanic combat is out. What that means is that you're no longer bobbing around in an empty sea. You're right by the land you're trying to conquer. Yar, Sun Tzu is from China and from a period of time quite earlier than what is inside Shogun 2 if I am not mistaken but it's ok because as they said his teachings have spread far away from China.
Read the interview and I am really sorry to be the black crow but it reeks of the same PR crap that was done before ETW for me (OUR AI IS AMAZING! DIPLOMACY HAS WHOLE NEW LAYER! EVERYTHING IS GREAT!) You can add a whole layer of sugar to a crap, it won't transform it into a cake but you will just have a sugar-coated crap... And sorry but applying SunTzu teachings to an AI... if it was that simple everybody would have done it already. Military across the world are still forcing their cadet officers to read the Art of War so if it was just "some bullet points", nobody would care about it today... The teachings are bullet points yes but they combine with each other and in some ways contradict each other sometimes (yes, I read the Art of War) like on when to attack, when to defend so it's not just a basic "checklist"... Oh and the "Suddenly, your family tree is important", well yar, you took that out from ETW/NTW (there were artifacts left in the game files that showed family trees were supposed to be in but were cut) but they were there in Medieval or Rome, so it's not exactly news... I really don't want to rot this thread with my negativity and I am sorry if I come back each time there is news with my ranting so I think I am just going to force myself to ignore this thread and any Shogun2 news before release. Please CA don't disappoint, I will luv u forevar if you don't and pee on your grave if you do This post has been edited by Gormaz: Nov 30 2010, 09:13 AM |
