Asro is playing hardball... I suggest those that can wait to do so - boycot their PVR and recording function. What really irks me is the monthly recording charges !
Those who swap out the astromax earlier i feel for you.

I will wait it out - although it is a monopoly and i have no choice i will not make it easy for them. Let them advertise and roadshow.
*
Boycott their monopoly. If not ,they charge with ridiculous services such as recording. mad.gif

How come there are no chinese HD channel in the family package such as AEC ? shakehead.gif

Questions:

1. Can we receive the shows during rainy season using the new HD satellite dish ?

2. Can we switch off the annoying subtitles for HD channel ? (We cannot switch off subtitles for SD channel such as AXN). It is such a pain when subtitles obscure the screen.

So confirmed then, we gain one channel, we lose one. Channel [V] will officially cease broadcast on Astro on 15th June. Below are replies from Astro's FB.
*
This Astro is a monopoly. They only replace channels to take out old channels and not add channels.

But in this case, I agree that Channel V is boring, so take it off.

Yes, all HD channel doesn't have subtitle (yet?). Astro should use closed caption instead if they plan to add in future, like History Channel.
*
The customers should have the right NOT to view those annoying subtitles forced down on customer throats in most English movies such as AXN.

For those who can't understand English, they should provide a 'switch on' option just like AFC.

I heard that the HD satellite dish is black in color and has a bigger size than the old one.

Does this mean we can view shows even when it is raining because it is more sensitive ?

Can a existing customer with HD satellite dish confirm ?

From the forum here I heard that if we change the hdmi cable to monster cable (around RM 250) then the quality of the sd channel will be better compared to the existing sd channel from beyond decorder. Is it true.Anyone can confirm
*
Monster cable is better than normal AV cable.

HDMI (meant for HD) is much better than monster cable which is just an improved version of AV cable (meant for DVD).

yeah we're looking into closed captions on them. .

Are you working for ASTRO ?

3 years ago, I call ASTRO to complain about the subtitle and they say they will look into it.

3 years later, NOTHING has been done ! All talk and no action

I am still viewing that pesky subtitles in AXN etc.

yeah I work there

it's actually a really complex issue to sync the subtitle metadata stream with the Shifting delay of our censored output and the technology to do it has not been around long. This is why if we broadcast the show from our playout centre we do use closed captioning as there is no delay to deal with. Also sometime the foreign channels burn the subs into their feed rather then us doing it.
*
We are more concern over the LOCAL subtitles that are burned over the screen. Most of the time, they are HUGE and cover up a lot of screen space. Just look at AXN !

Foreign subtitles are usually much smaller and only used when the speaker can't speak English well.

So when the LOCAL and the foreign subtitles are written at the same time, it is a mess !
Furthermore, the LOCAL subtitles sometimes cover up important information like the Director name, actor names at the start or end of the show.

By the way, will the upcoming AXN HD have those annoying subtitles just like AXN ?

TallJustin, good to hear about closed captioning. Hopefully its for all channels, not just HD?

Ares187-  the size of your sig image gives lie to the intent

Don't get your hopes high.

I have been complaining for YEARS for channels such as AXN/Hallmark channels and NOTHING has been done so far.

However, I like channels like AFC and Travel/Living because most of the time, it doesn't have those pesky subtitles.

Those so-called technical staff on the phone know next to nothing other than some common and simple problems eg. cable didn't plug in etc. laugh.gif

I have the same problems with TM net technical people, they don't seem to know anything else other than a 'standard' list provided by their supervisor to answer 'standard' questions.

They are not smart enough to think independently. yawn.gif

The real technical people don't answer the phone, they work behind the scenes.

No subs on HD channels.
rclxms.gif

I hope those ASTRO staff will be smart enough not to force their viewers to view subtitles a few months down the road. There are quite a large number of Malaysians who CAN understand English.

The reason why I didn't subscribe to the learning (discovery etc) and variety packages is that they have subtitles all over the screen. mad.gif

I will subscribe to byond soon so that I can view AXN HD and Fox HD.

Fox HD is for free preview for how long ?

Don't know how many years to wait until asstro put close caption subtitle in their HD channel.
*
rclxms.gif I like channels with NO subtitle, it doesn't clutter up the screen.

It is better for you because you can train your ears to improve your English listening skills and improve your English.

When you go out to the real outside world and speak to an american/european, do they have subtitles for you when you speak to them ? laugh.gif THINK !

Those are Malay subtitles and NOT english subtitles, and most of the time, the malay subtitles don't translate properly !

For those who don't know ANY English, they can have close caption which can be switched OFF or on.

Subtitles in Msia are way too big and very annoying. Look at TV2, AXN, NTV7 doh.gif

There are some channels such as AFC (Asian Food Channel) that are close caption, so there's NO excuse to glue horrific subtitles into AXN etc.

just call astro centre
have 2 package

1) upgrade your astro beyond to new beyond pvr (RM300) + new contract for 12 month for RM10/month
you can cancel your HD anytime when you apply this package

I thought we have to pay extra RM 20 per month so it is RM 30/month extra for PVR. Can anyone confirm ?

No any contract for PVR. If you wish to terminate PVR service, you must inform Astro to swap your PVR decoder to normal B.Yond and HD service fees still applies for 12 months contract.
*
I don't understand your English, do you mean there is no minimum contract period ?

I think it is ridiculous that we have to return the PVR if we cancel our ASTRO subscription.

We pay rm 300 for nothing ? mad.gif

For the old astro box, if we cancel, we can still keep it until we reconnect astro again many years later. rclxms.gif

Does anyone know whether the SD channel is clearer for this new HD dish when compared with old dish ?
I am thinking of upgrading to PVR but not adding the HD channels.

And also will there be less rain fade when compared with the old dish ?

SD channels are watchable in HDTV

if the installer has done a good job in aligning  the new dish, you may have a slightly improvement in rain-fade problem, but the problem is still exist in heavy rain
*
I know it is watchable but is it CLEARER or the same as the old dish ?
