I was asked on V.4 "why can"t I use my1 TB powered HDD"
The WD My passport AV HDD has been the only HDD that has passed the requirements of having a low power consumption and several other criteria. They tested lots of HDD and many have a built in reboot function when left on longer then 24 hours, this of course would interrupt a record. Most are just too heavy on sucking the juice during power up.
I think then rather then just opening it up for any old HDD which could cause poor recording or even damage the decoder they have made a white paper and at the moment only the WD My Passport AV 320GB passes it.

QUOTE(azrin_kiko @ Jun 1 2010, 09:18 PM) Other than recording functions, is the any other changelog to this new firmware... And does B.yond PVR has the same interface/GUI as normal B.yond decoder?? The GUI the same. There is now the 3rd option for viewing a channel. Pillar Box and Fit to screen (the current options) and the 3rd one specifically for 4:3 channels that letterbox their output (like Discovery). this option is called LB Expand (for LetteBox Expand). Basically it is the zoom feature that was on briefly before but tweaked a little bit so it's not so much zoom as before. Anyway as I said it is not for use as a default setting but to be used when a programme on a 4:3 channel letterboxes their programme. Like the other aspect ratio change you can control this directly from your remotes AR button. The firmware upgrade is for all b.yond decoders. QUOTE(digilife @ Jun 1 2010, 10:09 PM) dun worry they wont knoe jux dun on your max when they come Added on June 1, 2010, 10:11 pmwe nid your advice, which option to take for current Byond users? the rm5 or the rm10 / mth option? wat time is the update start and how long will tat take? thx haha. I can't tell you what to do. Do you want a dual tuner with built in HDD then get the PVR. If you want the ability to record and understand that you can't watch another channel during the record then get the plug and play option. I don't know what time the upgrade starts or how long it takes sorry, it's best just to put your decoder into standby when you go to bed and in the morning it will have done it. history says that it will be after midnight and probably before 1am. Remember this is not a dynamic update you must put your decoder into standby and it could take 5 minutes before it even detects that there is an update ready to install before it begins the upgrade process.

QUOTE(minimize @ Jun 1 2010, 11:00 PM) If power is a constraints, how about HDD using external power? Yeah, that's what I was repling about, use of an externally powered HDD. None meet the requirements yet. This is a world first guys, no where in the world has this option. It will I'm sure make other HDD manufactures step up their game. Obviously you can't fast forward a linear broadcast, we didn't invent a time machine. You can fast forward after you pause or rewind or on playback

QUOTE(fhdclub @ Jun 2 2010, 12:26 AM) are we on the same page are you referring to your astromax? i am referring to byond pvr and of course on linear you could only back track (since it could store up to 90min of spooled video on the channel it is switched-on on), pause (buffer) and play but it ought to have ff to catchup especially through the commercial break, but from their marketing materials it appears there isn't a ff button yes we are on the same page but you're mistaken as the function is there on both the PVR & the plug & play HDD. Trust me, I've tested it.

I should clarify by "valid points" I'm refering to your technical points. I don't agree with the assumption that we would release a new decoder to completely supercede one that is 6months old only. We would loss money by doing that as we wouldnt be able to clear out the stock of the first b.yond which is still in production and will continue to be manufactured

Ask me a technical or a "how do I...?" question and if I don't know the answer I will find out for you

QUOTE(g400g400 @ Jun 2 2010, 07:50 AM) astro pvr will be more useful, watch one channel and record the other. if using ext. hdd, which can only record the current channel u watching then no point in paying the rm5, just use the video out to record using PC via encorder. Just my 2 sen worth.. can't record HD quality that way, you'll get downscaled.

QUOTE(THEALB10N @ Jun 2 2010, 10:18 PM) Haha. My byond subscription should cover it, you cheeky bugger Wonder if you could answer this. When you receive the BBC world news feed, is it in widescreen, or has it already been cropped? If you recieve it in 4:3 I can understand why you can't broadcast it in 16:9 but if you recieve it in its native format, why not just rebroadcast it as that? Surely you could design STB firmware that will crop the image if it is connected to an SDTV, or output it in widescreen if connected to a widescreen TV. On all the decoders I've used in the past, there has always been an option to select in the menu for widescreen TVs (although it didn't seem to make any difference to any channels). Just a thought I'm pretty sure we are getting it in 4:3 out of Singapore. the BBC does have a wide screen feed but I don't think we are taking it in.

QUOTE(dxjb @ Jun 3 2010, 01:10 AM) Astro new website looks cool..but so complicated.. Now I just want to mix and match my packages and so hard to do so.. it's a massive change isn't it? Yeah a bit confussing at first but it's so different and is designed so you can customise it. I've got my facebook, gmail, programme guide, google and news feeds all there on one home page. I actually love it and wait till the online B.player kicks in.

QUOTE(anfieldude @ Jun 3 2010, 07:57 AM) TallJustin, What is the online B.player? One question about the PVR, would it also be able to accommodate an external HDD? I took a look at V2.0 last night briefly but did not see any major changes to the EPG. Is there more work being done on the EPG? b.player is online video it's also on the iPhone app store no you can't connect an external HDD to the PVR at the moment, why would you want to? EPG data will be improving soon, GUI is the same
