The first three disc transfers (9 of the 10 episodes) are in 1080P - while the last, 'Plants' is in 1080i.

Audio :

Audio is offered in a DTS-HD Hi-Res 5.1 at 2046 kbps. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is selected as an optional surround sound format holding constant bit rates from 6.0 to 3.0 Mbps. It is, infrequently, used in place of DTS-HD Master Audio where disc space is limited. It is, however, still considered lossless. Anyway, bottom line is that it sounds excellent. We get mostly 'front' narration with no much in the way of animal/environment sounds for separations. It exists but is far more limited.

BOTTOM LINE:

Desiring to understand the world in which you reside is, or rather should be, part of your inherent nature - but seeing it in such glorious visuals can be totally humbling. How is it that I do not know so much about my world; the environment and the creatures that I share it with? You owe it to yourself to take a few hours out of your busy life and watch this on Blu-ray or even SD. Visual enlightenment and global education continues the precedent set by Planet Earth. Watch Life soon and you will never regret the time spent.

Obviously the Blu-ray is the way to see Life with Nature's majesty mesmerizing you over and over again. Being a fan of this type of entertainment wouldn't be necessary to enjoy this repeatedly. Our very highest recommendation!

Audio :

The DTS-HD Master 5.1 at, a powerhouse, 4725 kbps is as perfect (or more?) than the video transfer. There really is no way to critique it as it appears to be replicating the filmmakers intent with zeal. The film doesn't have a lot of aggressive moments but whenever a bass punch, range, depth or sweeping high end for the score is required - the track handles it with relative ease. Audio is a good part of this presentation and the lossless track can't be criticized.

BOTTOM LINE:

I am little baffled by the critical indifference to Shutter Island. I believe I watched a totally masterful and visionary piece of filmmaking. I can only assume that some viewers didn't embrace the topic (there are harsh moments, on multiple fronts, for those more sensitive) but I was never under any constraints to complain about the length and DiCaprio, Ruffalo, Kingsley - were all magnificent, the atmospheric cinematography, the abundant style, the indefinable 'Scorsese' touches - add up to a mesmerizing presentation.  In my second viewing I identified many more of the incongruous segments as being totally intentional - veering us to, and supporting, the riveting climax. I'm tired of the 'Noir' talk with Shutter Island - there isn't that much here to help define it as classically related to the black cinema style simply because of the time frame it is set. The Blu-ray A/V is flawless (a tiresome word, I know, in reviewing HD) - extras were more limited than I would have anticipated but this is another in the director's line of enduring cinema - he continues to raise the bar. Few directors make films this... hypnotic. This has our highest recommendation. You will get repeat viewings out of this disc!

Have experienced the Samsung 3D package with Monsters vs Aliens and the result is amazing.  The best 3D experience for the home thus far.

BUT, I say not to jump into that as yet.  Wait till more titles are available.  And the players get cheaper...

3D is an acquired taste, even with the new polarised technology, so I suggest you test test a bit first.

Maskedchan, I just find out that Amazon France also got steelbook for Minority Report. 

I think, should get this one instead of UK version.  No sure is it same quality.  But this version got English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English subtitle.
