BERGAMO - Inter beat Atalanta to keep their four-point advantage over Roma with six games of the Serie A season remaining.

Patrick Vieira marked a return to top form with the opening goal after 21 minutes, Mario Balotelli adding a well taken second in the 74th.

Mancini called up just three strikers for the Bergamo trip, selecting Crespo and Balotelli in his starting XI and leaving Cruz on the bench.

Seventeen-year-old Balotelli combined with El Valdanito to perfection and it was the offside flag that kept Inter from going into the break with a big lead.

Inter went close to what would have been a stunning goal when Cambiasso crashed his first-time effort just wide of the woodwork after pouncing on a loose ball.

The Argentine marshalled the midfield brilliantly with Vieira and it was the Frenchman who grabbed a deserved opener when he headed in Balotelli's corner.

Crespo tucked home just before the break after latching on to Balotelli's deflected effort from Stankovic's brilliant cross, but the flag went up for offside.

Esteban Cambiasso and Mario Balotelli's second goal in as many games brought down Fiorentina to maintain Inter's four-point lead.

The incredibly tight Scudetto and Champions League races crossed paths at San Siro. The Nerazzurri needed a victory to keep Roma behind them, while the Viola had the chance to consolidate fourth place after reaching the UEFA Cup semi-final with a 2-0 victory at PSV Eindhoven this week. Adrian Mutu bagged a brace in that game, but Marco Donadel was suspended and Franco Semioli injured. Inter missed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Olivier Dacourt, Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba. Sebastien Frey passed a late fitness test.

Fiorentina had lost their last five Serie A visits here on the trot, though the fixture hadn't ended in a draw since a 2-2 result in November 1996.

Riccardo Montolivo wasted a promising counter-attack, but Patrick Vieira's right-foot strike was deflected over the bar off Tomas Ujfalusi. From the resulting corner Frey flew to punch Vieira's bullet header out from under the crossbar.

Adrian Mutu smashed a fierce volley over the bar and Javier Zanetti had to close down a splendid Mario Alberto Santana run. The move continued and Marco Materazzi used his back to charge down Kuzmanovic's effort.

Fiorentina still had the ball and pinned Inter back, but Julio Cesar twice parried Mutu at point-blank range after a combination with Giampaolo Pazzini.

Alessandro Gamberini's challenge intercepted a quick one-two between Vieira and Mario Balotelli, while Frey bravely rushed out to clear the ball and got an accidental kick in the ribs from Balotelli for his trouble.

Frey was at full stretch to palm a Zanetti missile round the post from over 20 metres, as he got to it with one hand. From the resulting corner the French goalkeeper was again remarkable to parry a Julio Cruz header from point-blank range.

Frey went down injured during that move, as he had already been in doubt with a knee and problem and added a thigh twinge to that. He needed more heavy strapping to carry on, but was limping badly.

Mutu's sudden snapshot from 30 metres whistled wide, but Frey again acrobatically fingertipped a Cruz header out from under the bar to keep the scoreline level.

Inter stopper Marco Materazzi insists that the leaders are back on track and in good spirits as the Scudetto race enters its final straight.

Roma put the pressure on the Nerazzurri by beating Udinese on Sunday afternoon, but Roberto Mancini's men responded with a crucial 2-0 win over Fiorentina.

Inter remain four points clear at the top with five games remaining and it seems that their March jitters are behind them.

"Once again they were waiting for us to make a mistake," Materazzi said. "And once again they were left disappointed.

"The real Inter has returned. It was tough against an in-form Fiorentina side, who once again showed that they deserve their League position.

"But we had the physical strength, athleticism and the patience to play a great game and beat them, deservedly so I might add."

The Matrix has struggled over the last few months, but he impressed against the Viola and is regaining his confidence after an injury-blighted campaign.

"I was also happy with my own performance," he enthused. "It was probably one of my best in the last two months.

"The work is paying off and I, like the team, have benefited a lot from the hard work I've done over the last two weeks.

"I had to leave the pitch due to a slight problem with my calf because I wanted to avoid any complications.

"But I'm not worried and I think it will go away soon. I will have to force it to go away because this isn't the time to stop."

TURIN - Captain Zanetti commented on Inter's 1-0 win against Torino.

"The only thing that counts at this stage of the season is the result," he said. "We earned a very important victory by suffering until the ninetieth minute.

"We were humble and intelligent in understanding the different stages of the match. We remained compact and we paid great attention to Rosina, who could have created problems for us, and we took full advantage of our chances."

Commenting on Balotelli's substitution, Zanetti said: "Mario just has to stay calm and give his contribution like he has done up to now."

MILAN - Massimo Moratti gave a brief interview to journalists this morning outside the Saras offices:

Moratti, have you almost won the Scudetto?
"No, no. There are still four matches left and they are all difficult games against teams who either need points to stay in Serie A, or who need to relaunch themselves, like (AC Milan in) the derby. We need to stay on course and play better football if we can. But yesterday was enough to give us a bit more security."

What do you think of the prospect of winning the Scudetto in the derby?
"No, no... And away to Milan, for that matter... I think it's important to win it, but any time is fine."

Your feelings about the next round?
"I think that Roma have a match similar to the one on Saturday when they played well, so a lot will depend on Torino and if they play like they did against us. And it obviously depends on us because ours isn't an easy match and Cagliari are playing very well."

Carlo Ancelotti said he hopes to win the derby and make Inter lose the Scudetto. Were you irritated by his recent declaration?
"Ancelotti is the coach of Milan and it's normal for him to say this."

Are you expecting to see Ibra on the pitch against Cagliari next Sunday?
"No, I don't think he'll be there next Sunday."

But will he at least be in Milan?
"Ibra has always come to see Inter, even when he hasn't played, so I wouldn't criticise him if he didn't come. He wants to follow the team and be close to them."

Are you disappointed that he has gone to Sweden for treatment?
"No. It's fine by me. He's more comfortable with this. It's an agreement between doctors and there's an excellent collaboration. The most important thing is that Ibra feels calm."

According to transfer market rumours, your son Angelomario went to Barcelona recently. Is this true?
(Smiles) "It would have been a nice holiday, but I don't think he went there..."

Adriano Galliani has declared that Ronaldinho is too expensive. Does this mean Inter will be back in the race for the Brazilian?
"He's expensive for us too. The word expensive doesn't exist for one team and not for the other. He's expensive for everybody."

Inter striker Julio Cruz has scored 99 goals in Italy and is looking to bag his 100th when the Nerazzurri meet Cagliari on Sunday.

Cruz, who has become known to Italians as the Gardener, netted the Beneamata's vital winner at Torino on Sunday.

"That goal will become the most important goal of my career if we win the Scudetto," the Argentine international told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The former Bologna star wants to finish the job as soon as possible and add a third consecutive Serie A winner's medal to his collection.

"For now, carrying home this Scudetto doesn't seem to me a lowly objective. We are at a good point, but we should not commit the error of thinking that we have already crossed the finishing line."

Cruz lifted the lid on Inter's recent wobbles, explaining that his own concerns over the situation ended only a week ago.

"I was a little worried after we drew 1-1 with Genoa and, in fact, soon after we lost to Juventus. Then we were held by both Roma and Lazio," he explained.

"I finally began to smile again after the 2-0 victory against Fiorentina, it was convincing in all senses."

The 33-year-old doesn't plan on retiring any time soon either and would like to stay at Inter for life.

"I want my century, then I want the Champions League and after that I would like to go to the World Cup in 2010," grinned the ex-Feyenoord hitman.

"My dream is to close my career with the Nerazzurri. I am well here, they respect me and I feel appreciated by the club and the fans. Every one of these things means a lot to a player."

Cruz also cheekily revealed that he could make an appearance for Argentina at the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer.

"For the moment I am one of the three reserves. The three veterans already earmarked to go are Juan Riquelme, Martin Demichelis and Javier Mascherano," he revealed.

Inter Coach Roberto Mancini has highlighted his three transfer targets for the summer and insists he won't be leaving San Siro.

The former Sampdoria forward confirmed his intention to remain with Inter despite doubts over his long-term future at the club and is hoping to add some fresh faces to his squad.

"I work for the new Inter. We are following Arsenal's Alexander Hleb, Gokhan Inler of Udinese and Abdoulay Konko at Genoa. They are three very young players that we like," announced Mancio.

The tactician told journalists he would resign at the end of the season after Inter were knocked out of the Champions League in March, only to rethink his decision.

One of the reasons for the 43-year-old's strange behaviour was Inter's unwillingness to sign the players Mancini wanted in January, most notably versatile French wing-back Konko.

But the two-time Scudetto winner moved to reassure Interisti that his difficulties with President Massimo Moratti are over.

"There are no problems with Moratti and everything is calm. We have already spoken of our plans," insisted Mancini

MILAN - Inter brushed aside Cagliari 2-1 at the Meazza but Roma cruised to victory over Torino to keep the Scudetto on ice.

Julio Ricardo Cruz scored his 100th goal since he has been doing his job in Italy to put Inter in front on 22 minutes, Marco Materazzi adding his first of the season after coming on for Stankovic.

Cagliari grabbed a late consolation through Biondini.

Inter were always in control and produced their first chance after just 30 seconds of an enthralling opening ten minutes when Mario Balotelli's shot on the turn missed the target by a matter of inches.

Cagliari, needing points to secure Serie A safety, could have taken the lead in the third minute but Matri shot wide after racing unchallenged into the box.

Mancini's men piled on the pressure and strike partners Cruz and Balotelli both went close before the seventeen-year-old star had a goal ruled out for offside.

Balotelli capped an extraordinary start to the game with a first-time shot from Cambiasso's pass after a defensive mistake by the Rossoblu.

The pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Cruz' header from Vieira's pin-point pass went in off Bianco.

Inter took their lead into the break after Cambiasso drove wide from close range after Capecchi failed to reach a Cruz cross.

Unrelentless in his search for a goal, Balotelli drew applause for a spectacular shot on the turn that was well saved by Capecchi.

There was no let-up in Inter's domination as Cruz went close to a second in the 76th minute, his low drive finishing just wide.

"It wasn't an easy game," he told Inter Channel after Sunday's 2-1 victory. "It was the first time in ages that we had played in the heat, and we were up against an in-form Cagliari side that had done well for a string of matches.

"You need to pay attention to everything when you're so close to the finishing post. The boys did very well today, especially in the first half.

"If I have to find something that needs improving, I'd say that we missed too many chances to score a second goal.

"The replacements for the absent players did well. When a few important players are missing, those who come on give more. But perhaps we relaxed a bit at the end.

"Up to now the team has done well in the difficult moments. We have had a lot of problems and the boys have never given up. What has pleased me most is that we have never given up."

Moratti berates sluggish Inter

Inter President Massimo Moratti criticised his team for “only playing the second half” in today’s derby defeat.

“They were fairly blocked psychologically in the first half, but after going 2-0 down that freed them and they were able to play,” said the patron.

Milan dominated for over an hour, but it was only until after Pippo Inzaghi and Kaka’s goals that the Nerazzurri put some pressure on their rivals.

“It’s a shame, as we weren’t focused on the task at hand and we could have changed the result in what proved to be a classic hard-fought derby.”

This result and Roma’s 3-0 victory away to Sampdoria closes the gap to just three points with two rounds remaining.

It is a bitter blow considering many had already planned a title party this afternoon, as a victory would have mathematically sealed it.

“We have already been three points in front before. I think at this stage of the season nerves are bound to hit both teams,” added Moratti.

“I was in all honestly focusing on the derby rather than any Scudetto celebrations. I was disappointed we waited too long to get going in the first half.”
