Messina 0-1 Inter Milan

MESSINA, May 6 (Serie A) - Hernan Crespo's second-half goal secured another three points for champions Internazionale on Sunday afternoon and condemned Messina to Serie B football next season.

The Argentina frontman made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, scoring 19 minutes from time to maintain the Nerazzurri's already unassailable advantage at the summit.

The goal was a bitter blow for the Sicilians, for whom Arturo Di Napoli's penalty had been saved by Francesco Toldo only few minutes earlier.

Messina are now 10 points adrift of the last position of safety with only three games remaining.

The hosts started brightly, holding onto the ball well against the newly-crowned Serie A champions.

Inter keep on winning in Serie A; this time they defeated their Sicilian opponents 1-0 at the weekend. However, coach Roberto Mancini admitted that the result was probably more due to good luck than anything else.

"Maybe, if they had scored the penalty, we wouldn't have won. I think that we had a bit of luck. We could have surely done better.

"Once we scored, we defended it well. Our goal did not come by chance, on the contrary."

Mancini praised Crespo for his goal which arrived just 6 seconds after his entrance on the pitch, but commented negatively Adriano's performance.

"He (Crespo) always scores decisive goals, whereas the Brazilian lost a bit of condition, but surely needed to play more than the others."

Moratti Invites Inter Not To Give Up Inter lost the first leg of the Coppa Italia final 6-2 against Roma, meaning that the Nerazzurri need to win with a margin of four goals in order to retain the Italian cup trophy.

Moratti Invites Inter Not To Give Up

Massimo Moratti tried to blame motivation for the terrible performance of his side in the Coppa Italia final which saw Inter suffer a humiliating 6-2 defeat against Roma.

"Losing like this surely does not please us, for fifteen minutes we did not understand much. Maybe they had more motivations than us.

"I must say that this is the only low we have had this entire season. Now for the second leg we must believe; it is surely difficult, but in football miracles do happen."

The second leg is in program next week on the 17th of May at San Siro, with both teams expected to field their best players in order to lift the trophy. This is the third consecutive year that the Giallorossi and Nerazzurri are facing each other in the Coppa Italia final.

Materazzi Regrets Coppa Italia Ban Inter defender Marco Materazzi is disappointed regarding his suspension for the Coppa Italia return leg.

Materazzi Regrets Coppa Italia Ban

Materazzi received a yellow card in the first leg of the Coppa Italia final, in which Inter crashed to a 6-2 defeat against Roma and.

Due to accumulated bookings, he will be forced to sit out the return leg of the Final in San Siro this Thursday through suspension.

A bitter Materazzi declared that he regrets the ban. He also guarded off the criticism that followed after the unexpected 6-2 defeat.

"I am very sad that I will not be able to play," he said. "It has been my biggest regret right since the end of the first leg.

"But I believe the criticism towards us was probably too harsh, especially when you consider the pace we kept to win the Scudetto, that we deserved and secured easily, breaking every possible record."

"I think that sometimes it is right to respect those who have been professional to the end, including today," he concluded, referring to the super comeback against Lazio.

Crespo "El Vadanito" has been my idol since 6 years ago when he's at Parma...though he doesn't have enough pace to beat defenders, but his physical presence inside the penalty strikes fear among the top Serie A defenders...he always at the right place at the right time and able to make runs effectively to pull defenders away...no doubt, he'll be my idol forever!!! notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

Barcelona Interested In Materazzi!! FC Barcelona's number one target over the summer will be a powerful central defender in the mould of Marco Materazzi - if not him - to take control of their back four.

Barcelona Interested In Materazzi!!

The Blaugrana's technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, has pinpointed the lack of aggressiveness at the back as a key reason why the team have slipped up this season.

According to Marca, the Blaugrana are willing to go for broke in order to bring Materazzi to Catalunya.

A strong header of the ball, great in tackles and a player who has shown a very strong personality particularly after the World Cup victory, the management agree he would be a great addition to the Nou Camp outfit.

What is not known yet are the names the club are after in order to ensure their cycle of success goes on for a while longer, although the Blaugrana understand that prising the 33-year-old away from Internazionale would be very difficult and will begin a search for a similar player.

The Catalan giants have been linked with a move for Chelsea's John Terry, but his asking price and reluctance to move abroad saw that story quickly quoshed.

Frank Lampard is the closest to a move, it seems, Barça also want to add a defensive midfielder to their ranks - to find a player with similar attributes to that of Edgar Davids is their goal.

During their successful run to the domestic title and the Champions League last term, Barça were able to count on Rafa Márquez to protect the back four, but he, Edmílson and Thiago Motta have all been off-form this term.

In a meeting with Rijkaard and club president, Joan Laporta, the technical secretary aired his views and an agreement was reached that a team leader would be sought.

Zanetti Not Ready To Give Up The Inter captain urged his team-mates to do their utmost in order to beat Roma with a four goal margin and win for the third consecutive year the Coppa Italia.

Few teams would have any hope of winning a cup final following a 2-6 defeat in the first leg, which would crush any hope of triumph.

However, Captain Javier Zanetti does not want to give up yet despite the huge deficit and the necessity to win with a 4 goal margin in the second leg in program on Thursday afternoon at San Siro.

"We know that the comeback will be difficult, but we must try, and only with a united group we can succeed.

"Cruz's recovery is very important because every time that he played he gave his contribution."

Even President Massimo Moratti admonished his players to try and overturn the first leg's defeat.

"The President is right," admitted Zanetti. "On Thursday we must be determined, however no one can criticize a team which won convincingly the league."

Moratti Discusses Inter's Transfer Plans Inter Milan parton Massimo Moratti discussed his plans for the summer, and revealed that after spending big bucks last summer, money would not be splashed unless strictly necessary this time around.

Moratti Discusses Inter's Transfer Plans

Nothing Rash

"This team has won and has achieved important results this season, so I don't think we need to make any major investments," said Moratti.

"I don't want to disappoint anyone, but there will only be a few small adjustments to give more continuity to those departments where we suffered injuries this season."

Figo

"For us, it would be important if Luis Figo were to stay. He is very important in terms of quality on the pitch and for the squad," he continued.

"We think he can be useful next year too. If he leaves we will have to think about how to intervene in the transfer market.

"If Figo leaves we will have to buy two players because besides experience, he has talent.

"If he stays, Mancini is right in saying that he can't be used for the entire season, so you need another player who can cover that position."

Other Areas

"We will certainly have to reinforce the midfield and defence in terms of numbers," the Inter patron explained.

"However, if I found myself at the start of the season with the same squad I have now, I wouldn't be worried about facing the championship and the Champions League."

Adriano

As for the Brazilian striker, who has continuously been rumoured to have problems, and been linked with a summer move, he said: "We are still with Adriano and we're trying to find the best solution for him and us in terms of preparation for next season.

"In any case I think it would be nice for Adriano to be at Sunday's party [which the striker was not keen to attend, wanting to return to Brazil]. I think he was just looking for a solution to recover quickly.

"Has he decided to stay? It takes two to make decisions, but I think he wants to remain, just as we want him to stay and perform at his best."

Congratulations Milan, But Liverpool Were Better - Moratti

Massimo Moratti has sent a mixed congratulatory message to local rivals AC Milan for winning the Champions League

"I saw the match and I want to compliment Milan for their win," said Moratti. "However, I must admit that Liverpool played better in the match itself and the Rossoneri were a bit lucky

"But they also showed the determination needed in such an important match, which then ended as they had planned."

There has been much said about whether Inter's Scudetto or Milan Champions League has been the better of achievement.

Things threatened to boil over last night when banners mocking Inter's achievement appeared (briefly) during Milan's open-bus tour of the city.

"I have nothing to really say about the incident; these things are just part of the game," he said.

That, of course, is the diplomatic version. Many in the Inter camp are very upset, and Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has apologized for the gaffe.

"As soon as I was told about it I immediately had it removed," he said.

Problems In Figo's Al-Ittihad Contract According to the latest rumours there is a glitch in Luis Figo's agreement with Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad.

Problems In Figo's Al-Ittihad Contract

According to a press note distributed by the player and published by Spanish and Portuguese press, Luis Figo will not play with Al-Ittihad next season.

The note in question states that "after the agreement reached on 4 January 2007, the club Al-Ittihad have not respected their duties, that were agreed upon in the signed documents, and since it was a unilateral violation, it cannot be compensated".

The Portuguese star should present a formal complaint against Al-Ittihad at the FIFA player commission, adding that he has not made any agreement or signed any contract with another club.

Figo had already been doubtful when asked whether he was 100% sure of leaving Inter.

If the deal with the Arabian club should fall through, the Milanese club would welcome him back with open arms.

Confirmed: Crespo Completes Inter Move

Argentine striker Hernan Crespo has fulfilled his dream of staying on at Inter Milan.

Confirmed: Crespo Completes Inter Move

Negotiations with Chelsea had been going on for a week now, but at the end of it, Crespo and Inter seem to have been given what they wanted.

Reports from Italy are suggesting that Chelsea sent the Nerazzurri a fax on Tuesday evening, in which they authorized Crespo's loan to the Italian champions for another season.

It is his final year of contract, meaning that he will be a free agent to sign on with Inter once his loan spell ends next summer.

The Nerazzurri already have plans in place for that, and have agreed to sign him on a two year deal, as was confirmed by the Argentine's agent, Fernando Hidalgo, this afternoon.

"We reached an agreement with Inter. It will be a one-year loan, followed by a two year contract," he revealed.

"We are happy, this is what we wanted."

While no financial details have been revealed, it is believed that no money was involved in Inter securing the loan deal (what is effectively a transfer).

Milan Deny Gilardino-Adriano Exchange
tongue.gif
There was a lot of speculation on Friday that the Rossoneri and Nerazzurri were ready to swap their two strikers.
brows.gif

Alberto Gilardino's agent wanted to rebuff the claims which were attributed to his client on Friday, when reports in Italy were suggesting that the World Cup winning striker had offered himself to Inter.

Apparently, Milan had accepted this transfer, asking in return Adriano, but later on in the evening the Rossoneri categorically denied that this had actually occurred by issuing a press statement.

In this press statement, Milan quoted Beppe Bonetti, Gilardino's agent, that his client had never offered himself to Inter and reassured Adriano Galliani and Milan that Gilardino's wishes were to remain with the Rossoneri.

Gilardino has been linked to Juventus in the past few weeks after a difficult season with the Rossoneri, and the possible return of Andriy Shevchenko and the promise of a world class purchase by Silvio Berlusconi could see him opt for a different solution since he will go down the pecking order.

Inter defender Marco Materazzi has defended Totti's decision, and says that his motives to refuse playing for the Azzurri have been misunderstood.

"I don't think Francesco said that he only wants to play the crucial games and leave us playing the less important ones," said Materazzi.

"He is now making himself available to return to the Italian national team and it's up to the coach to whether call him up or not.

"He receives exactly the same same treatment as we do, that's all."

Totti has declared his intention this morning to return to the national team, putting to bed the controversy.
