My uncle bought a Sony Blu-Ray player last year, he seldom use it cause the BD movie is just too expensive and he usually will only borrow those older movies from friends to watch it. Yesterday I bought the Avatar BD form local store and trying to rip into my POHD, but unfortunately the version of the ripper unable to rip the disc due to latest protection and need to download update patch, but when I click on the update button, there will show "no update available for this moment". So I just take the Avatar BD to my uncle house to watch it, to my surprise, the Sony Blu-ray also having problem to playback the disc, say something like please send to uptade firware. I was wondering why Sony want to do all these mess and give a lot of trouble to customer, we pay everything and still unable to watch it, now i have to send my uncle Blu-ray player for update. Yesterday I did call to ask the shop where my uncle bought the player, the guy said need to wait until Tuesday for the Sony guy to come. We as consumer, just want to watch a HD movie in the comfortable and simplest way, but Sony just create a lot of problem to us.

Because all this copy protection is not for the consumer benefit but their wallet. A lot of issues such as HDMI handshake, audio dropout is due to protection protocol issue. It's funny that when you read a comment someone bought the original disc but have to download a rip version to play the movie. They are driving consumer to look for alternative ways to watch the movie.

Imagine asking your grandma to update the firmware.

Dude, what Sony BD player model is your uncle using? I suspect it's either BD-S350 or 360. In either case, you can update online yourself without needing the service guy. But of course, you need to connect your BD player to internet la. Sony BD players are one of the most playable brand around.

First, I think you can only blame Sony on some part but not all cause it is 21th Centurey Fox (or whoever) decide to use new protection method on Avatar.

To my surprise, our dear forumer, maskedchan, had mentioned that his Panasonic BD player never update firmware but still can play Avatar without problem. (Maskedchan, please correct me if I am wrong. laugh.gif )

Update firmware is not too difficult, go to Sony's website, download latest firmware and follow Sony's instruction on update firmware procedures. This part, I believe, comsumers should do it themselves unless their truly don't know how. blush.gif

No need the Sony BD player to be connected to the internet. Just go the website, and download the firmware, then burn into a disc.

Just put the disc into the BD, and follow the instructions. i did that for my S350 when it could not play T2:Skynet Edition. After the firmware update, no problem anymore.

Hope Avatar will not give me any issues later.

technology can be quite a biatch at times...

Shouldn't you be able to download the firmware update into a USB thumb drive and use it to update the player? That's if you don't have it connected to the internet...

Yes, I know can be updated through website, but the problem is my uncle house doesn't have any internet connection, so unable to do the update on the spot. I just damn miss the old day DVD, no such issue and can be played any DVD. would like to ask if we updating the firmware half way and suddenly the electricity power broken, what will happen to the player? Sony and Fox video did all the copy protection also useless, some of the hacker just need a few munites to crack the protection, Sony already knew this, why they still want to do those useless protections? Didn't they know that the customer who buy the player and the disc suffer the most? If they really want to prevent from people copy the disc illegally and sell at Pasar Malam, then please lower down the price for the Blu-ray movies, not do all those useless copy protection give a lot of troubles to us.

It's not only Sony's BD player are affected by the BD+ code change. Others too. Next time do your research before posting a knee-jerk reaction about this.

And yes, it has happened before when BDs with Java first launched.

So if one day they decide not to release any of their films because of piracy, this would really be good for consumers because... ? Try seeing the issue fairly from both sides.

This only happens when software and firmware were produced without following the protocol and standard industry practices.

Somebody who can't get Avatar BD to play because of firmware issue then download a ripped version to watch it, obviously isn't doing much to search for a solution to the original problem.

i know DRM is bad, but if u r actually Sony and u're seeing pirated BD out there or BD torrents on the internet, what would u do? better yet, if u created something that's original and awesome, but i duplicated ur work and sold it for 1/2 the price (i do not care if u're selling it for RM1 only), what would u do?

there will never be a win-win situation until everyone starts playing nice. so u'll have to live with whatever Sony tells u to do or u can go back and exchange ur BD for the DVD version.

Donno why TS blame Sony. You should have bought a media player instead of BD player if you wanna play BD RIP movie. And again, if money is an issue, why'd you buy a BD player in the first place? doh.gif Knowing the BD player itself already expensive more over the Blu Ray Disc doh.gif

Because all blu-ray copyrights owned by Sony. And all these copy protections also made by Sony. If you buy a Panasonic, Sharp, Pioneer... blu-ray player, you also paying to Sony as well. I was just wondering why Toshiba given up the HD DVD battle, if Toshiba win the battle, maybe Toshiba won't change all these copy protection continuosly.

I understand ur frustrations but I don't think ur statements are accurate. BD patents are held mostly by the membes of BDA. There is a consortium of companies that worked on the technology after initial work by Sony/Philips and Sony/Pioneer. Also copy protections (BD+ is done by Cryptography Research). The copy protection is being pushed by the studios mainly. Let's not go back to the HD-DVD/BD war, its done and we shd move on.

Some of the studios are paranoid about piracy hence all this protection. Whether it is really helping to curb piracy, remains to be seen as witnessed by the fact that it did not stop people from getting "copies" of their blockbusters....
