Hey guys! Whatsup!! Just found this thread and thought i'd hangout here abit biggrin.gif I'm currently djing actively and am hoping to go into production soon. So i've got TONS of questions about ableton production haha! Lets just say the software and me are not very good friends atm shakehead.gif So hoping to share from my experience and learn from you guys.

Anyway here's some music and my page if you guys are into electro/commercial:

if you're just experimenting then anything more than a entry level digital dj controller would probably be too expensive, maybe look at a Numark Mixtrack, or Traktor's S2? If you haven't, maybe you could just play around with some dj software and your keyboard and see how that works out for you biggrin.gif

+1

I would opt for trying it out with some software first like traktor (My preference), seratto or virtual DJ if you're just hoping to blend some songs together for your listening pleasure. For a good cheap midi controller I'd go for the Mixtrack or the mixtrack pro, which is probably the best entry level controller in the market on a budget. Also has a massive jogwheel to give you the DJing feel haha. However, you'll need an external sound card like the audio2dj or such if you're considering the mixtrack. Something else you could consider is going for the Hercules controller as well if you're on a budget.

Hahaha thanks mate for the feedback!! Anyway i have no idea how to install presets or samples for ableton. I'm not sure if i'm using the wrong file type or what or doing the wrong process and I cant seem to make a good kick sound for electro with the operator. If i'm not mistaken we can install presets sounds and packeges right? Like golden samples, prime loops and loop master and such right?

lol Must be very excited when having to post this without full stop. Lot10 ? I might have to google it , about the price range which one is worth better to buy. Many reviews I read throughout online from youtube to forums said Pioneer are just to commercial for its controller product. Affordable are about Rm2000 and if there are any extra left may think of getting a pair of good headphones.
*
Ever considered the mixtrack pro? It should be way in your budget. Try asking around for a traktor s2 as well it might have dropped a lil since I last checked. I might be able to get 10% off on certain brands like numark and such if I purchase through my friend. Not selling anything here but if you're interested I could help you check it out smile.gif

Hey guys,

I'm trying to look for a beginner DJ controller at a price range to RM1000. It seems a rather low price range for a DJ controller but bare in mind, I'm a beginner and just need one to practise on. Apart from the the Numark Mixtrack Pro-II, any other suggestions?

Or anyone has cheap, good condition, second-hand DJ controllers, send me a message. smile.gif

Thanks!
*
Mixtrack is pretty decent beginner controller. You could look at Hercules or maybe the Pioneer DDJ WeGo? Hope this helps.

Hello all sifus. I have one question.

When I use my djm mixer the Master Level i usually put it 11 oclock and the light level the most go up to yellow. I played a track and the track dont sound loud at all. Probably my one and only track that has this problem. What i did was, i turn the channel gain knob all the way to maximum but it is not loud as well. just wanna ask is it my track problem? will i damaged my studio monitor or mixer bcoz i turn the gain knob all th way to maximum (but it is not loud at all). hope to hear from you guys. thx
*
1. If your master level goes up to yellow means your output is coming out at that particular level.

2. When you play your other songs is it louder?

3. When you turn your gain knob all the way maximum, did your master level go up into the red?

4. Your studio monitor wont be affected by the gain knob level. It will burst however if the sound output (LOUD) is beyond the threshold of your monitors. It could damage your hearing as well if too loud so better lower your volume before making any adjustment.

Solution:

1. It could be possible that your track quality is very low as compared to your other songs or not normalised when burning.

2. check all your cables connecting up to your decks/cdj/speakers

3. is your input line/cdj or phono?

4. your speaker volume is set to low?

Hope this helps smile.gif

Hi takalimc. Thanks for your reply.

1)Yea, other song louder but only this particular track softer.

2)No, the master level still on green level. It does not go up to red. Only the gain level turns to red.
My input is line/cdj and yea, my speaker volume is set relatively low.

I think my monitor wont be affected by this right?

P/S how to normalize a track? =)
*
1. I think its probably a problem with your track. You can try to download a higher quality version of the track or normalize it.

2. if your volume on your speakers is low it wouldnt blow.

I usually download songs at 320 kbps so my songs are relatively okay. But if I do get a track thats overly soft for my liking, I'll use a software like GoldWave to expand the levels and save it out again. If you're burning songs software like Nero usually has a feature that you can "check" to normalize songs during burning.

Do not that normalizing does not increase the quality of the song(s), it's just somewhat boosting the gain/volume of the track.

1 question.. do i have to at least know how to play a musical instrument in order to ease up DJ'ing?
cuz i am pretty hopeless in musical instruments..
*
understanding how to count beats and bars and flow of music would help but is not essential, you could always learn it along the way. As I always tell my friends, DJing is the easiest instrument to learn smile.gif All the best in learning biggrin.gif

QUOTE(Ayer @ Feb 12 2014, 11:47 PM)
hey fellas

i've been a silent reader recently and seeing how lively this thread is growing, i suppose i might as well jump on the bandwagon

i really want to be a part of this community but my shy, introverted attitude has been putting me off this idea. however hearing the term 'bedroom dj' and my passion (addiction, too) in music makes me feel brave enough to write this post

so i'd like to ask everyone here to help me on these things:

- what are the most basic tools that i will need to start dj-ing? i need to know this so i can set up a budget.

- for those who are used to the industry, how do you react to the stereotype thinking other people have about being a dj?

i am a bit interested with the production stuff too but for a greenhorn like me i think its wise for me to get used to everything first, right?
*
- what are the most basic tools that i will need to start dj-ing? i need to know this so i can set up a budget.
1. A pair of headphones. - This is the most important. Don't go around borrowing peoples headphones. This is where you should start.
2. Decide what you're going to play"
> Controller DJ - get a basic controller suitable for you. There's tonnes in the market depending on how much you're willing to spend.
> Software DJ - usually those playing serato or traktor in the club. You'd probably need to get the software and the sound card.
> Normal - Some thumbdrives and maybe some CDs

- for those who are used to the industry, how do you react to the stereotype thinking other people have about being a dj?
1. We DJ for what we love to do (and also for the $$$) Theres always gonna be haterss, but there's also going to be people to loves your music. Just dont suck and don't get cocky just because you can "DJ". If you love what you do, do it for you. Don't do things or quit just because of what others say about you. We were all noobs once and we practice and work our way up smile.gif Don't think so much bout what others think.

i am a bit interested with the production stuff too but for a greenhorn like me i think its wise for me to get used to everything first, right?
1. Find out which DAW is suitable for you, what type of sound you want to produce, watch ALOT of youtube videos, prepare your sounds, find some tracks similar to your sound, try to reproduce those tracks in your own way. Keep practicing.

Hope it helps. All the best! anything not sure can just ask smile.gif

Hi Ayer,

I would recommend trying out pirated software to test out the feel of DJing, while also looking up videos and tutorials about the techniques used for DJing. The #1 thing you must have to really be a DJ is a passion for music though! Everything else falls into place if you have that passion.

I wouldn't run buying equipment aside from a good pair of headphones (which everyone should have really). You can actually find decent apps to cut your teeth in DJing like Traktor DJ, djay 2, and a couple of others that are available for iOS and Android. They're a lot cheaper than the full programs and are useful to just play around with DJing.

In terms of production, I would really recommend at least giving DJing a try before getting into the nitty gritty of production. It may sound easy but most DAWs are very complex; going in without an ounce of knowledge or 'feel' of what songs should sound like may discourage you early on.
*
+1

you could also drop by a studio or friends place and ask them to give you a tour of DJing. It may be good to get a feel of it before actually investing so much and later figuring out its not for you.

I've seen many whom dropped out half way

Any resident or club djs here? Just wondering how you guys got started out smile.gif

you can get a mix out and go through some of the local small organizers to give you a go. Sometimes when you start off you will have to play the first gig free or play for a minimum amount payment.

I think it would be super helpful if you could list the small organizers you speak of (I'd certainly like to know! smile.gif)

@hanleon

I'm not really familiar with those around now a days. The one i started off with 2 years back is no longer around. You could check out the events and parties at the pool, roof, laundry etc and get to know the people behind. Also I think most of the boys and girls coming out from excessive records are doing pretty well. Also those boys under chuckies seems to get quite a fair bit of exposure.

That's a good start really. I think it's really important for DJs to know where they can go to start climbing up the networking ladder to find gigs and learn how to DJ publicly.

I've had some interactions with the Excessive Records people but don't really know how to approach anyone about giving a chance to amateurs. Slow and steady for me I guess biggrin.gif

thats the spirit! get to know people and always keep learning! keep in touch i could push you for some gigs if people ask me to recommend. The rest will be up to u!

Well, the way I started out in Canada and then Dubai was through networking as well. Don't know how it is in Malaysia and I have been itching to get back in to the DJ scene after going on a hiatus to focus on producing for the labels.

I remember when I was a fledgling DJ and I was looking for a gig. It was hard and I really had to stoop to some low lows to even get a promoter to consider me. I sent out mixtapes after mixtapes and networked my ass off, sometimes sitting in a club until closing time so that I could speak to someone to get me a gig.

Speaking of, anyone know how the scene in Malaysia is? I'd like to get my feet wet. Maybe play a gig or two. Relive some old memories biggrin.gif
*
I believe starting off anywhere is pretty much the same as building your contacts and networking. The more people you know in the beginning the easier it is to start off.

In what terms do you mean how the scene is? In KL it is definitely competitive but I wouldnt say it's impossible to get some gigs under your belt smile.gif

Pioneer launched a new controller for serato with full sized jog wheels and actual sized mixer. Looks like a MONSTER to me! What are your views and how much do you think it'll retail?
