You'll most likely have to find a way to get your output from your board into the existing board input. Not sure how you will do that as I have no experience linking boards. Probably set existing board EQ at all flat, then connect your board into a channel?

Either that or bring a lot of XLR cables and extend the XLR's from the existing booth all the way to where you want to set up. In any case, plan to be there super early to set up, test, and make sure everything works to your satisfaction.
*
I don't think you can do the eq and mixing from another mixer that your instruments are not plugged into. Unless you connect the instruments micing to your new mixer and output into the old mixer to go to the house? Not too sure. I've seen how people adjust their system using iPad apps but not too sure how that works.

In order to do the mixing you'll need to control each channel individually to get the right balance, you cant mix the output as a whole unless you just wan to control the volumes and the overall eq in a mono or stereo output.

Ok noted with that.
Well, what are your recommendations for sample packs? Also, I don't get what you mean at the bassline part unsure.gif .

Hmm... classes? Idk, but I see most classes for production are real expensive  sad.gif .
*
I used ableton before to try a go at production from scratch. So I used this plugin called an operator to make my kick drum and bass line.

http://www.musictech.net/2013/07/ableton-l...orial-operator/

Sample packs you can look for VEC has some decent sounds in there or FL studio comes with some pretty decent build ins. These should be easy to start exploring and finding a sound you like. You could buy some from practically anywhere online. Google and beatport are ur best friend.

Classes is something you get what you paid for. It's a short cut and you'll have someone to refer to when you're unsure of anything. If you're really into it, I'm sure a little investment will be worth while smile.gif

Alright discussion time!

Is alcohol important in a party? Can the music be as enjoyable without the alcohol?

I for one get edgy and nervous when I play sober, but I dont think it's compulsory to make the party ABOUT the alcohol.

What do you guys think?

I think it's pretty important to have some kind of party-starter. Playing out sober is perfectly fine (and in fact is the ideal state of mind to perform), but the majority of people who party need something to loosen their inhibitions to really dance and let loose. Plus it helps a lot that music sounds soooo much better high (on anything).

However I also don't think parties should be all about the alcohol. It's more about the people you party with and the adventures you have together. This means it's important to have booze, but more important to have a great atmosphere for people to have fun.

Give me a party with crazy people having fun on alcohol over a bunch of hipsters barely bopping their heads messaging constantly on their phones any day. Booze has a way of making people stop thinking about impressing others, and instead enjoy living the moment!
*

Well said. I think any party can be awesome if you go with the right crowd. Of course the alcohol would be a boost, but I've been to alcohol free parties that was just awesome and also alcohol centered parties that just didnt work out...

@Hanleon
You think it'd work out to run a lowyat night out? Ever happened before?

@takalimc I don't have a set of CDJs handy to use for it, and maybe my music isn't quite appropriate ^^" mostly deep/tech house these days

well no harm submitting and trying smile.gif There's no limitation to genres though they do require you to mix 3 genres in the finals if you're selected. It'd be a good experience smile.gif I didnt go far last year only the semis but I met alot of great people and learnt from the finalists different styles of mixing and other skills and ideas that I would never have thought of.

You could submit and give it a go and if you make it then you make it, if not then at least you know you tried smile.gif I doubt i'll get through though cause got a number of comments that my mix was a little draggy but ah well hoping for a free flight rclxms.gif

welp. i still don't get when i should drop my next track over the next track playing. it always ends up messy. btw, i would like to ask, what do djs normally do when they have one track successfully phrase matched? do they immediately play the next track? or do they wait for a mix point? just curious though because when i have one out, i don't know what to do next haha.

Sorry it's too early in the morning and I'm not understanding your question... can put it in early morning (lazy Friday) language? rclxub.gif

hmmm k then. like when DJs have a track played right, what do DJs normally do next? wait there for a mix point to come in and then start the next song? or something else?  hmm.gif
*
Ohh get it! Urmm when I have my track playing already then the following thing happens.

1. Entertain crowd
2. Look for next song
3. Entertain crowd rclxm9.gif
4. Pitch
5. Pretend in state of trance flex.gif
6. Mix next song in

Repeat laugh.gif hahhaha

Urmm for warm up timing I usually wait for 2 breakdowns and mix in but as the night progresses I usually mix 1 breakdown depending on the song to up the energy. If they want to listen to the whole song they can do it on the radio or at home biggrin.gif

QUOTE(thevool @ Aug 12 2014, 08:04 PM)
Hey guys! Hope newbies are welcomed here. laugh.gif

I just started getting into electronica music. Got myself a humble 25 keys midi keyboard into my Mac.

Next, I am thinking of setting up a simple home setup, just for practice and some recording of my stuff into the Mac. I already have a cheap headphone, so I guess next I'll need monitor speakers and a USB audio interface.

I was told that plugging from the audio jack out of my Mac straight into the PA is not a good idea.. That's why I am considering a USB audio interface.

- Just for very budget and simple room practice, what monitor speakers should I be looking at? (I was even considering just PC speakers, but I heard even the cheapest of monitor speakers will sound better than any PC speakers.)

- What about USB audio interface? Is it really necessary to get a good one like Focusrite 2i2? Or just a cheaper one will do?
Do you guys bring your own USB audio interface to gigs to connect it to the PA ? Or do you have another more convenient method?

I'm just trying to justify the need of a good USB audio interface.. Because if it's really necessary to have a good one for future gigs, I'll consider a good one.

Hi there, haha long time since I heard Electronica! brings back the days of benny benassi of old hahaha. Please find my recommendation below.

1. Consider investing in a good headphones (if long term and planning to play professionally(Semi))
2. Monitor speakers and audio interface? You mean an external sound card with a balanced xlr or how?
3. I use pc speakers and not much issue with it. It really comes down to what you're trying to achieve. If you're into home recording, production and mastering I'd stay that it's essential to get a good pair of monitors. If you're just using it to practice with cdjs or anything, any speakers will do, even a home hifi.
4. Again, what are you trying to achieve with your usb interface? To link your laptop to the cdjs? That case you'd probably have to get something that is more suitable to which software you're using. Traktor, Serato, etc. If just a sound card to plug in your speakers, perhaps you can just invest in a cheap external sound card should do the job. For digital players, they usually bring along their soundcards like the Traktor Audio2DJ,A4DJ, A6DJ or their serato interface.

I think it's better to tell us what exactly you're hoping to achieve in the long term. You dont need to spend the whole lump sum at once. I find it's better to get some quality equipment then to change halfway down the road when you've outgrown it. That way you can really tell the difference.

All the best in beginning your journey thumbup.gif

haha I earn quite alot from it just when I"m playing daily it becomes kinda like a brainless thing haha not so much trying new music and such cause by time its done we go home and sleep and wake up late and eat and relax awhile and then out for standby and drink and play and repeat.

I'd do more raves though biggrin.gif

My my... I really overlooked this thread
@hanleon and @takalimc sorry for not giving a reply, wasn't notified. ohmy.gif

anyway I think I'll just actually wander away from DJing from now...more to productions. flex.gif

Goldsounds Music Academy has now come up with a production course and it looks tempting for me but the price is 1.5k for beginner... dk if worth it or not sad.gif I'll post the syllabus they cover for 1.5k later .

[attachmentid=4125042]
*
depends are you a hardworking or kinda need the motivation spoon feeding type of person.

Good thing about courses (if good teacher) is you can skip the process of bumping into unnecessary mistakes and picking up bad habits (happens with all instruments). They could probably give you good samples and examples of sounds and guide you on the right track if you make a mistake.

However, if you're like me (I'm pretty impatient and I dont like committing to a fixed schedule, so yeah I never really had luck in theoretical or music lessons.) then you might just end out wasting 1.5k without actually learning anything.

There's tons of lessons available online. Perhaps you could try those first?

But if you follow a schoold they might be able to hook you up with some good labels or such or teach you the ins and outs of marketing and copywriting etc. Not sure if they cover that.

Let us know how it goes if you enroll thumbup.gif

DISCUSSION!!

How do you guys cope with your day job awhile maintaining a steady line of gigs at night? How do you feel about it? Are you wearing thin on energy? Do you slack off at either one? Are you considering going full time into DJing or giving up to pay more attention to your day job?

Have fun biggrin.gif

Haven't had a steady line of gigs like you @takalimc! =P But from what I've read, if you really want to make it in DJing you will most likely quit your day job to focus on the music. Otherwise it's really hard to balance day job vs night since you're basically not sleeping.
*
Haha I don't really have a line of steady gigs also smile.gif just doing it as a hobby atm. I dont think that DJing can give the type of stability we can expect from a day job. Sure for now when single and no kids is fine but I wouldnt throw all my eggs into that basket to raise a household unless well established and financially stable. sweat.gif
