QUOTE(hanleon @ Mar 10 2014, 12:48 PM)
Well it depends on the amount of time you have and what slot you're playing. If it's 2 hours or more you have much more leeway to play the traditional and recommended 'warmup > peak > closing'. If it's 1 hour then it depends heavily on the timeslot.

Prep-wise I'd cue point all the music I was using, and get a set of songs at least 2x the amount of time you're playing (1 hour set = 2 hours of music prepped). After that is done it's a matter of practicing the set often so you get it down and can play it efficiently.

Whats your thoughts on harmonic mixing? I've seen DJs that swear by it but i've tried putting some tracks together but it didnt really blend. rclxub.gif gotta stick it to the old skool for the moment laugh.gif

QUOTE(hanleon @ Mar 17 2014, 03:54 PM)

1. Count from the first kick drum (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. 2,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. 3,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. 4,2,3,4,5,6,7,8).
2. When you reach 8,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 you will HEAR that the music is changing, something is being added to the mix (in the song it's the bigger bass drum)
Hahaha I thought I was the only one who counted like that... sweat.gif I've tried to explain this way of counting to countless of my old students but none of them understood what I was saying doh.gif

hanleon I'm a bit out of the beginner part, about beginner-intermediate but still not amatuer level yet rolleyes.gif . My problem now is how can I find where to cut in the currently playing song with another song (not sure the term but I think its phrase matching). eg. like how can DJs find out where to drop the breakdown of the song  just right after the first drop of the song or beat-cutting at the drop/some other section eg. Skrillex http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6yDzcqSKlk. This seems like really a great skill man, idk how. Do they figure it out in their head a transition or is there some method to do it? Right now, I'm relying on my instinct and can suddenly make a short two-song transition in my head, and then later trying to get it mixing. cool.gif
*
For most dance music songs it is a 4 by 8 (not sure if I put it right) 4 bars of 8 beats before something new comes in.

Like hanleon said, try counting 4 bars of 8 beats and you'll notice something new comes in, e.g. hats or the snare.

Pre-cueing your songs before a set can really help in the smoothness of your mixing because you know how long you have to mix and exactly what will happen after the 32/64 counts. Some djs even mark their mixing point so they dont miss it during a set.

But end of the day is about practice and getting to know your songs. Try putting a couple of songs together and practice and you will be able to notice certain "spots" that just shout "MIX ME HERE" thumbup.gif

*or maybe thats just me* doh.gif

hey everyone, i'd like to know how you guys prepare a mixtape? i've been thinking for a while about this so i can create my own for personal use.

I use ableton to do my mixtapes. Select Songs and flow - Warp - Arrange - EQ - Special Efx - Compress - Export rclxms.gif

Listen to My Mixtape to see whats going on smile.gif

Thanks for writing this down guys wink.gif  thumbup.gif , I really appreciate such knowledge. Will read through more detailed soon.

Lel, ever since last year, the most recent songs in my playlist already consist of alot of Progressive and Electro House icon_rolleyes.gif trying to vary up genres and not sticking to just one cool.gif
*
U should be able to play across all genres but have your main genre as your image. No use just tying your self down to one and limit your gigs biggrin.gif Pay me 5k to play a retro set for you and I'll have a 2 hour set waiting for you in 1 day brows.gif

@Ayer If you're using Traktor, there's a record tab on the top right corner (where your 2nd FX deck is). Just click on the record tab, click the record button and mix away!

Which brings me to another tip: ALWAYS RECORD! Record every time you practice and play; often you will make an accidental awesome mix and the only way to catch it is through recording! You can also listen to the recording after practice to see what could be improved.

I see a software eh, is it hard to learn the ropes? btw cool mixtape bro, but i wanna try something that strays from the big room edm here hehe  tongue.gif
nice tips, but actually i don't have any real dj equipments currently. kinda short on the money side  sweat.gif but im totally gonna take this seriously once i have the cash and excess time!
*
Yeap I use software to do my mixtapes. I used to do it with traktor but now I do it with ableton. Alot faster and smoother.

It takes bout 2 or 3 you tube vids and you should be good to go hahaha!

BTW Traktor is a software so you dont really need to get any dj equipment.

Insanely fast prep, u must know your songs well.
Btw, do you have any tips on where to place cue points? I'm a little clueless on where to put them except the part I want to place and have plenty more cue point spots to fill hmm.gif .
Lol, same. Money is the stumbling block. sweat.gif
Closest I can get a feel is on an iPad, but limited in functionality.
*
I cue my songs 2 bars before the break for edm songs and 1 bar before the break for commercial songs. Makes it easy to mix. Sometimes I put 2 cue points 2 bars and 1 bar in case i miss, but it tends to make me look like i'm panicking to mix haha.

You gotta invest to get the returns. My first investment was a RM350 head phones and started from there. rclxm9.gif

I'm looking around for a studio monitors that wont rip a hole in my pocket. Note: It's for home use biggrin.gif

Anything to recommend? And an estimate price?

I was looking at the KRK Rockit 5 or the Reloop Wave 5 as well.

Hi, any recommendations for controller for a beginner to start off?

I'm eyeing on either:

Numark Mixtrack Pro
Pioneer DDJ ERGO
Pioneer DDJ weGO2
Hercules DJConsole RMX 2

If there's any other suggestions that would be great.
*
Personally I'd prefer the Numark Mixtrack Pro.

I think I could get a good deal on the RMX2 as my friends shop has new old stock. Pretty solid build though...

^^ It's just a calculation for consideration, these factors should always come into play when considering price. Not that I have a regular gig anywhere at the moment, like I said just amateur right now! smile.gif I have played for a bunch of events and house parties before though, just did a nice corporate gig last Wed! You can check out the recording at www.mixcloud.com/playmochi and gig pics on my Facebook page.

I wonder, how do DJs go about advertising their services here in Malaysia? I'm really keen on working as a DJ, but have no idea where to start. Any ideas @takalimc?
*
depends what you mean by working as a DJ. U want to be an event by event like corporate functions or private parties, then you could work with one of the talent management or booking agencies around. If not, you want to work as a resident dj then you can just go through one of the pubs or bars and start as a warm up dj. Just need to see what your goal is at the end of the day smile.gif

I think doing both would be fun. Will look into the pub/bar thing! any suggestions welcome biggrin.gif

What would you say is lacking in the DJ scene here in Malaysia?
*
Haha all the best smile.gif

What's lacking? Definitely not skills or music selection from what I see... Just my two cents... it's a growing industry and there are alot of positives and talents out there but of course there are alot of minor minor negatives and setbacks here and there. I think what we're really lacking is there's not really a strong enough community (or union) that can get all the djs and producers on the same channel to really push the industry forward? We need to all be on the same page and push forward to create a standard for organizers and venue owners to understand the value of our industry.

QUOTE(darthbii @ Jun 4 2014, 03:15 PM)
most probably I might start with a few sample pack synths and throw in some original sounds then. yeah, but as they said, once you've got a song produce the next so won't be that stressful lol. actually i tried thinking that i should make my own sounds because considering i see newbies getting flamed for sticking too much samples, loops and premade synths, but i think mixing and matching might do the trick, thanks for the suggestion. nod.gif

hope to learn some sound design ASAP.
*
start with samples and learn to tweek them. Use layering and adjust with your creativity the eq/efx/mastering. If you are worried about being flamed then this probably isnt the best industry for you because people are getting flamed over everything left right and center (even for big producers like nicky romero, avicii, porter robinson, etc). If you're planning to come with your own bassline using the operator, you should go for some classes or watch loads of tuts on how to layer the kick or the bass, if not you'd probably end up with a track that doesnt give you the "Uumph" that you want, hence overloading yourself and giving up quickly because of the time and effort invested with a not very nice outcome.

Recommendation is to stick to samples first and learn how to do basic arrangements to get used to it. From there you'll be able to know what you're looking for.
