hey guys very begginer newb here. just got interested to dj 2 weeks ago. anyone can help me choose an all-in-one dj controller that is good, affordable, and also am able to load tracks into the controller with a usb and comp. planning to mix dubstep, house, techno and a little bit of electronic, what's the best for me?

edit: any good centre around ss2 that provides DJ course. main priority would be dubstep for me smile.gif

Anybody here purchase DJ controllers from other countries like US? I'm thinking of getting a Numark NS6 but the price here is expensive (RM4k++) while I found a deal online which sells for below RM2.5k not including tax. Should I go for it or not?

You should make sure the voltages are multivolt for use in US AND outside of US. DJ controllers aren't taxed by our government, so you should be good. Get it from a reputable vendor and MAKE SURE you calculate your SHIPPING before ordering! A couple of kgs will add hundreds to an order.
*
Will be purchasing from iPmart here : http://www.ipmart.com/usa/product/Numark,N...php?prod=363625. They are pretty reliable. Probably going to get a step-down voltage converter from 240v to 110v, choosing the cheapest shipping nod.gif . Thank god, it isnt taxed biggrin.gif .

With that out of the way, warranty is a bit of a problem. Contacted their support, in any case it breaks, I would have to ship it back by myself. Should I still go for it? Maybe I would if there are people offering to fix locally here hmm.gif

Tough to find any kind of controller equipment repair locally. I have no experience in that, which is why I bought the Denon MC3000 instead. Thing is built like a tank.

As long as your transformer is legit and good, it'll be okay. Just always remember to have it around! Would suck to arrive at a gig without one, or if someone accidentally plugged it in without the transformer. Gotta take good care of your investments!

i dont recommend purchase from overseas , especially when something wrong with it u cant do anything onwards ... cuz it doesn't support asia country , try going to SMX in times square KL

@Rainman_ will try visiting. so far, never 'touched' a DJ set/controller b4 not joking sweat.gif

btw, how did both of you start out? like how did you learn the craft? i think of going for course, but really expenisve for just a hobby unsure.gif

The Goldsounds DJ school has a Groupon up now for an introductory course. You could try for that if you are interested.

DJing isn't hard, especially as a hobby. The passion for music and pleasing your audience is what matters. Always keep that in mind! Good music played at the right volume, at the right time.

And if you really want to use it purely for hobby purposes, perhaps a smaller 2-channel mixer would be better. The Pioneer digital gear is pretty funky, with light up platters and stuff. (and you probably won't ever need 4 channels)
*
Ive been thinking of learning online.... blush.gif

So, basically, 4 channels is more than enough? Hmm... maybe the DDJ S1 might be more budget-friendly for me. laugh.gif

As a hobbyist, you shouldn't worry about battle skills. Battle skills look cool, but nobody dances to battle music. And of course Goldsounds doesn't teach battle skills; it's introductory! I would recommend going for the intro Groupon course *before* buying a mixer. RM80 to learn that you don't want to do it vs RM2000 (in case you actually don't like it)

Learning online is sufficient for basic mixing. It's about counting and knowing your music well. Technology will help you fast track to being able to play, but by no means does it mean you are good or can play in public.

2 channels is more than enough. 4 channels are tough even for people who have years of experience DJing. With a digital controller setup a 2 channel mixer can be used in so many ways. I would suggest mastering 2 channels first before considering 4, because even 2 channels could take more than a year to learn.

In all honesty, if you want to buy a controller for hobby use (vs using in public), I would recommend something much simpler than the S1. The Pioneer WeGo has a great style factor and leaves you alot of room to grow. If you master the WeGo and want to play in bigger venues/parties, then you can consider buying something fancier like a Traktor S4 or equivalent. Then you can use the WeGo as a fun, portable party mixer.

A money-saving piece of advice is to start small. Think about what you want to use your mixer for. In general:
$250-1500 : Hobbyist / small parties
$1500-2500 : More technically inclined people
$2500++ : You DJ for a living or you have a lot of money

Seriously, for small parties a basic 2 channel controller with EQ, pitch, cue/fx buttons is more than enough. If you have an iPad, you can download plenty of DJ programs to try your luck with (though physical controllers are much more fun).
*
Still, I think I would want the S1 though. The features look like they'll be handy for me, especially the strip search. Price shouldnt be too expensive too (2.2k-2.025k)

Can you link me up with the Group on coupon please?

You can try the online course from DigitalDJTips.com

http://www.digitaldjtips.com/how-to-digital-dj-fast-2013/

It's pricey (for us) @$100, but it's got the basics down from what controller to buy to basic mixing skills. I bought it, and I think it added to my experience pretty quickly. Nothing beats practice and deck time of course though, which is what goldsounds can offer.
*
That is also quite good, along with iDJ course (about 3x more expensive though, not worth it as the curriculum is about the same). Maybe I'll get the How to Digital DJ Fast one. Yeah, agree, nothing beats getting taught one to one, it is possibly the fastest way, if only it were near my area hmm.gif .

Fuuhhh.... heavy investments here sad.gif but the joy of DJing is really unlimited biggrin.gif

I'm actually perfectly fine being a hobbyist biggrin.gif , but if my skills are good enough then maybe I might consider brows.gif

Anyway, should I get an S2 MK1 old version? The price seems to drop as the newer versions have been released.

EDIT: Maybe I'll just get the refreshed version cause the older one is not any much cheaper the the new one tongue.gif . Now, I have 2 to pick from.... Pioneer's DDJ S1 or NI's S2 MK2 hmm.gif Tough one to decide hmm.gif

betwwen these 2, the biggest difference is the software. S1 is Serato and S2 is Traktor. Traktor gives more effect but more heavy load for your laptop, Serato gives better stability but less effect. Otherwise both of them have just small difference. Its all about your practice time and skill after all.
First step is look into youtube for lots and lots of  reviews and giggs from these 2 controller, then decide traktor or serato.
*
Heard around the net that Traktor seems harder for a beginner to learn than Serato hmm.gif

Still not an easy choice

I think I will ultimately go with the S2 as there are plenty of tutorials on it plus iPad compatibility

Now my question, can I just DJ with an amp or do I need speakers?

ok. so looks like i learnt quite much till now really. all i can say, djing really is just about getting two tracks fit together and have the crowd enjoy it laugh.gif . all is just about counting and using 'sync' brows.gif and actually it starts to seem not that difficult than i thought it would be. but now, i have a question, everytime i try counting, most of the time, i fail to have the tracks alligned smoothly playing together. im just not sure actually where to start counting and i just randomly pick a spot and count. i know its obviously wrong, so im asking here, where do i actually start to count? blink.gif will be picking up an S2 MK ii, maybe Pioneer HDJ 500s and a Edifier RT1600 Plus. blush.gif good enough to start?

Bro sometimes I experience that too. Well you just have to practice more on your tracks so u know where to fade in
Haha me too  biggrin.gif
*
Personally, I chose a Traktor setup cause though its complicated, but it will leave me plenty of room to grow really. Most say the WeGo is the best for beginners, but seriously, I dont want to fiddle with something like a toy, plus more incurring charges cause I'll quickly outgrow the WeGo and then in the end will end up with a Traktor controller nod.gif . So Traktor it is. icon_rolleyes.gif

I really tried but *gah* it doesnt really work all that good. I just dont know which part of the track to start counting. Maybe because of the music I'm choosing? Mixing dubstep here sweat.gif .

Lol dubstep mixing is pretty advanced. You should start with 4/4 music like House. Learn a bit about manual beatmatching, then use sync to learn phrase matching. After that you can use Traktor's key analysis to do harmonic mixing.

You should also be counting constantly. Being able to figure out where the count is at without counting would be the goal, but otherwise just keep counting on one.
*
Well, phase matching is really straight foward for me but beatmatching is really hard because I'm just using strictly software and the BPMs don't allign properly (hard without physical hardware) but I'll give it a go.

Just kicked back and listened to some dubstep tracks in my library, they're also about 4/4 really. :/
