Oh if you're just using software then you should definitely be using Sync. I don't think beatmatching using a keyboard or mouse would be useful.

If the music is 4/4 then just learn to mix intros and outros for now, or you could mix breakdowns together and fade out Song 1 when Song 2 has the drop.

Actually, what are you trying to learn?
*
Ok, I'll try them out. I'm just learning on how to really drop on the one properly. Most of the time I fail to mix well, probably due to no proper headphones yet biggrin.gif . Now, where do I have to set cue points at? At the 'one' or could I just set them to a place I really want to mix in?

You seem to know the art fairly well @Rainmain flex.gif

As you know, I just got into the EDM scene early last year (all thanks to Skrillex when his Levels remix played on the radio, before that, RNB and HipHop was the fad) so I'm actually fairly new to things like this. If you 've guessed it, my favourite genre is dubstep but now I'm starting to listen to some Electro House and normal House music if anytime I need to relax.

Well, I find the Traktor Pro interface really clean looking so I will go for it notworthy.gif .
Thanks for the cue points advice, will catch that video when I have the time. laugh.gif

I appreciate the art , I learn it cuz I love this art , I take it as my hobby now and sometimes feature in the crib show at aforadio , Malaysia dubstep alliance and , throwback at bar sonic zouk , used to take it as a carrier but eventually I found out my day job earn more then that and my health issues . I prefer both of my hand on the mixer and turntables , but not waving in the air ...

Dubstep , trap , drum n bass ,drum step , glitch hop , moombacore , moombathon consider bass music , u always see DJs like skrillex , krewella , flux pavilion , doctor p and many other dubstep djs mixing these genres back and forth in their sets , bass music basically takes more effort then whatevershithousemusic to create a good set , cuz the bpm range is too high ....

I just comeback from malaysia dj battle 2013 yesterday , 1 word for the contestant ... Fail ...is totally not a battle , is like a club partying ...

Check out the video I post below , this girl 17 y/o won the champion of MAD competition from 21 male contestant and 1 female contestant with just 7 months experience under guidance from *secret* and currently one of the youngest Video dj in malaysia and representing malaysia dubstep alliance  . She just done a showcase yesterday at malaysia dj battle final 2013 . Will upload the other one when I free . This set mix from drum n bass , drumstep ,trap to dubstep in 7 minutes , + technical showoff and beat juggling and double tap
. Check the transition between xilent - boss wave & zomboy - mind control , this is what we call a battle . Age and Sex is not an excuse .... If u got the passion u can make it

really great skill shown there notworthy.gif , comes down to say gender isnt important, the important part is skill and dedication
but, i still suspect a bit cause i rarely see her use headphones (maybe her hair was covering em? hmm.gif )
the transition was to me a bit simple though love both of the tracks too biggrin.gif

so beat juggling huh, what's it actually about? see you saying that its some sort of great skill to learn. and where she learnt it from, secret huh? sweat.gif

no wonder i see Skrillex and others after completing Mothership tour, they'll be like as though they've conquered the world like that. now i see its not easy really. motivation upped icon_idea.gif .

heres for you to kick back to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ2Z5LeKLyY great new dubstep track wink.gif

thumbup.gif I actually agree with you quite a bit. For me, I dont really think using sync is really that cheating, but excessive use can be a little.

Hmm.... now it got me thinking, is it needed to cue up every track I have in my library? Plus, I dont see the option in Traktor that helps analyze the keys of my songs unsure.gif

Might get it by next week. whistling.gif

QUOTE(hanleon @ Nov 26 2013, 05:29 PM)
Exactly. Anything in excess is usually not good.

Older versions of Traktor don't come with key analysis. I think 2.6 onwards is when key analysis was implemented. If you're running the 'free' version then I can't help you there; don't worry about it, it's not essential.

Syncing is also great because it saves you time from adjusting the pitch faders, which is probably really useful for dubsteppers like you. Be sure to set the Sync mode to 'Tempo Match' rather than 'Beat' (it's in the settings somewhere). This way you still have to sync your beats manually, but the tempo is automatically set for you.

No, you don't have to cue up EVERY song smile.gif it's a very exhausting process! If you play out, you will eventually want to because once you cue a song, you never have to cue it again. Just cue up maybe your top 30 favorite songs for practice, and try mixing with cue points. You will learn alot and hopefully come up with a cue point system you can use in the future.

I've spent many hours cueing up songs... have only done a few hundred so far. At least House is easy, usually same structure. Cueing up alt rock and hip hop is a bit of a nightmare.
*
Traktor Scratch Pro 2.6.2 running on a crack at the moment sweat.gif brows.gif (of cos it wont be long when I get original license). Now, where is that option?

Well, mostly dubstep tracks are 140/70 bpm and I doubt pitch faders really help, I think adjusting the tempo through the platter to allign the kicks and snares might do. Anyway, didnt even have a hands-on of it so I might be talking crap here (just based from my observation of videos whistling.gif )

thumbup.gif Pheww. Looks like I'll just cue songs I like most then. Of course, it aint gonna be dubstep for me all the time, I'm also now branching out to some electro house, house and dance genres. thumbup.gif
Now I have a question here, I would like have two dubstep songs drop on their drops at the same time, but I'm not sure how sweat.gif . Hope if you know. unsure.gif

When you right click and click Analyze, the auto-setting should already be setting keys for you. You may need to right click your column headers (title, artist, bpm, etc) and select Key to open up the Key column of your track browser. The keys are all there.

Aligning kicks and snares is called beatmatching. Adjusting the pitch faders is actually adjusting the BPM. They are called pitch faders because adjusting the BPM will up or down a song's pitch due to changing song speeds (make a song faster, sounds like chipmunk; slower = troll)

Dropping on the drops at the same time? Meaning you want the songs to 'drop' at the same time? This is called Phrase Matching. Every song consists of Phrases put together to form the whole song. Phrases can be 8, 16, 32, or even more Bars. Bars is how many beats in a bar (4/4 for house). Using technology, it's much much easier to set visual cues as to where a phrase starts or ends.

To answer your question specifically, if you want botwegs to drop at the same time, you need to know your music by counting how many bars is it to Song A and Song B's drop, then mix them together. For example, if Song A has 32 bars to the drop, then you just need to find the point where Song B has 32 bars to the drop.

Very easy to do this in Traktor. Go to the drop of the song, then mouseover the track stripe (the full song waveform). You will have a little popup that actually tells you how many bars to wherever you point the mouse (ex. 24 bar).

Again, you should try doing this with simpler music first before going into dubstep. Dubstep's high BPM and complex combinations make it harder to learn the basics; walk before running!
*
thumbup.gif Thanks for the info. Lol, how silly of me, I thought those popup readings were there to help me find the 'one'. Well, how many beats does Traktor count as a bar?

I'm also finding these items attached here. On a budget for speakers, so I'm thinking of using the Philips Micro-HiFi MC147 I have that is just collecting dust(thankfully it has an AUX port) hope to know where I can get them around KL/PJ.

Both do. Depends on one's preference. Avicii is more uplifting housey trance while Hardwell is rougher electro house for bassheads. I'm just really inspired by him as I'm almost in the same position as he started.

Yes, the behringer had some unhappy reviews about it. I would recommend googling the crap out of anything you are interested in, including how to mix and all that. I actually had a post in this thread some time before detailing alot of things you may be interested in. Go back in history and find it wink.gif
*
I prefer the Camelot Key system more blush.gif . Anyway I'll try to figure how to get it installed.

Any good electro-house songs out there worthy to be in my library? Now I'm fiddling around with Traktor DJ on an iPad, been mixing my two only electro house songs (Sick Individuals - Lights of Neon and Hardwell's Call Me a Spaceman) both seem to mix seamlessly well, double dropped em. nod.gif

Mix harmonically and in phrase. You can use Traktor's keys or MIK's keys for harmony, but mixing in phrase so quickly means knowing all your music inside and out.
*
I like how he does drop after drop then suddenly a breakdown part and then drop again and again. I know you told me that there is a bar counter if I hover over the waveforms to have the tracks come out at a specific time, but I dont see him on the laptop much blink.gif Thats why I'm confused.

Maybe he had planned it? Is it possible to do something like this live or at the last minute? I dont want to be some DJ who just uses the crossfader to make a clean mix. laugh.gif

QUOTE(hanleon @ Dec 30 2013, 12:55 PM)
You would definitely need a lot of preparation and practice to get this right live.
Preparation meaning:
1. Cue-pointing all the songs you want to use in a proper manner (when does the drop hit? when should you mix in? this is called phrase matching)
2. learning how each song mixes with each other (harmonic mixing, do the keys clash?)

And all this preparation is useless if you don't practice to keep it tight.

You'll need to become much more familiar with your music and then your software, achievable through experimentation, online tutorials, and most of all practice.

It's definitely a planned thing. In a live setting with hundreds of people looking at you it's very hard to perform this kind of routine completely on the fly (unless you're a genius). Most of the time when DJs go into such complicated routines, they either prepared their songs extremely well that they can make it flow however they want, or they have practiced the routine countless times as their ultimate combo kinda thing.
*
Now I see icon_rolleyes.gif . Thanks for the explanation.

Well, save to say some just play a recording of their mix live am I right? I've seen Zedd (no hate but respect) playing his set live here on YouTube. The mix was complicated too like this, but he was just there standing and enjoying the crowds whistling.gif . Plus, I heard him do exactly the same mix (sort of where his song Shotgun suddenly dropped amidst Clarity, and the opening of his set was Shave It, the same song played here in his opening) somewhere else

No hate for him though icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(hanleon @ Dec 30 2013, 03:31 PM)
Those are pre-mixed edits and mashups that artists use for their own shows. Trying to live-mix a lot of songs quickly can become a nightmare when you consider a horde of 10000 fans screaming at you for all the mistakes you made and the money they spent on the show.

This is actually one of the reasons behind the 'press play' argument that went on in the past couple of years. However, consider the fact that the professionally produced and mastered mashups/edits sound much better than a on-the-fly attempt, and you can see where the line between producer/DJ blurs considerably. Readying a mashup specially for a show is taking adequate preparation five steps further by making sure things sound great and the party continues.

Thanks for the explanation. Managed to clear my doubts rclxms.gif .

I'm thinking of taking up producing EDM too (genres I would focus are electro house, progressive house, chill melodic dubstep and hardcore brostep brows.gif ). Problem is, I'm not sure where to start? Anyone here an experienced producer? Can share a bit laugh.gif ?
