Eh boardshorts can, trunks also can. IMO the issue with trunks is that using it in sandy environs (sea/ocean esp.) can be a tad annoying, material to cut-wise.

Not to mention that if your 2 year old trunk has significantly shrunk, it can be uhh..."discomforting" for your nether regions. Must properly care for your family jewels oi.

On distance and travel fatigue possibilities it's about the same.Just obviously that if you were to go by bus it's a lot cheaper.Fuel,toll and daily parking rates exempted.Normally if you go by bus you can immediately get the return tickets done right on arrival provided if you're all set on the dates.Self drive gives you flexibility for added stops and sight seeing off the LPT on the way up to pass Cherating area.It's your call bro.
