naa, getting emotional again eh?

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1651635

nonono, since you are a 'tortoise god' and i'm just a nobody with a few red eared sliders, please enlighten us with your knowledge.

i hereby challenge you to discuss properly and provide evidence that those tortoises you are selling really are G. pardalis ssp. pardalis. icon_idea.gif

please note that i'm not a trader - i have nothing to gain. this discussion is solely for the purpose of knowledge.

and thanks for the nice siggy - i love it!

not that i expected much from a self-proclaimed 'tortoise specialist' that thinks he can get away with everything because he has throngs of fans, but to immediately close his thread after throwing derogatory remarks is pure cowardice.

nonono, come here and explain about the G. pardalis ssp. pardalis please.

and if you're sore about things i've commented in this thread about your husbandry or knowledge earlier, please do note that you're representing a pet shop, and discussing and condemning the malpractices of pet shops are not beyond the norms of Pets Wonderland section.

QUOTE(volrath @ Dec 8 2010, 05:35 PM)
hi! im new in this thread.

never owned a turtle/tortoise before (i have 3 cute hermit crabs though, still with me since 9 months ago hehe)

and so i have an interest with tortoise/turtle (the same feeling when i had for my crabbies tongue.gif)

i prefer dry turtles/tort..which requires least water in the tank (for bathing purpose is nvm, i can always bring to my tub)

coz i keep my pets right beside the place i work (my working table), air-conditioned and dry...so i prefer to have a tort/turt that suits my environment.

if so, can u recommend me where to buy one? i occasionally will go to Ikano pet store there, n sometimes, petsmore at various places...so where can i get the best deals? thanks alot
*
the only tortoises that exactly suit your requirements and can be legally obtained (read: make sure they come with legal papers) at the moment are sulcata and leopard tortoises. however, i would like to suggest redfoots, as they are some of the best tortoises for beginners, but they should be kept in a more tropical setting (more humid, etc).

just be sure to give them enough heat (basking light) to counter the coolness of air conditioning and be sure to monitor their humidity. hatchlings and juveniles grassland/savannah tortoises, especially leopards, can be very sensitive to environmental variables.

the best deal, sincerely speaking, is to do a little bit of research and get a little bit of the basics regarding husbandry and prepare yourself for what you're getting, and then you can browse the shops to compare the condition of stocks and the prices before making your decision. the reasoning behind that is simple - information you get from shops and sellers are often misleading, as most of them are only interested in generating sales. heck, some of them don't even know what they're selling (e.g. nonono).

looking back at your enclosure, the size of animals and by your description of the problem, my personal opinion would be, the chances that your RES climbed are greater than them being abducted by birds wink.gif

oh yeah, those RESes looks far nicer and healthier compared to nonono's corn-fed rare tortoises wink.gif

anyway, since their PM reads "ACARA TERBUKA UNTUK UMUM jadi siapa saja boleh ikutan, krn Reptil milik semua" I think we should send some underwater representatives next year huahuahuahua.....

What do u mean stone? Well, Dad said it ever ate stone and having trouble shitting but luckily it shit the stone out lah...

And prolapse??? Oh damn. Any way can stop or cure it?
*
hey Nicole aka miss architect cum contractor smile.gif

you can try to test for bladder stone by feeling/stroking/sticking your fingers into the soft parts under the shell where the hind limbs stick out.

or, if you're not sure or want further confirmation, you can bring her to any vets that have x-ray. serious stone cases would need surgical procedure to cure.

if prolapse is suspected, bring her to vet with fresh poop sample.

ah darn nice spengleri(s)..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

btw, state wildlife department went to my place today to handle some monkey troubles. i intentionally called fire and rescue, but they relayed the message to wildlife doh.gif ).

i ended up having to quote various sections under act 76 and 686 while answering questions like "are these turtles for sale?", "do you keep star tortoises?", "how do you make profits out of these animals?" LOLOLOL LMFAO!!!

my opinion would be that because the genus Pyxidea is closely related, and even considered a detachment from the genus Cuora (boxies), so it is easier to lump them together in the common name section.

anyway, one of my lost euro contacts that breeds G. spengleri exclusively swears on pinkies.

Hey hey! Thanx guys!

BTW, Cam, what do u mean by 'cum'? 'Become' is it? tongue.gif

owh... cum is the latin preposition which literally means with but in that particular sentence would serve to mean and also. (architect and also contractor)

a little friendly reminder for those who pick up hibiscus/opuntia/grass/etc from your neighborhood, roadside, etc - be aware of pesticides.

and plants that are planted by the roadside by municipal/city councils are usually watered with water coming from questionable sources - just smell it. plus, oh yeah, it is currently salmonellosis season in peninsular.

the best source for these food items is to plant your own. if you buy a new plant from a nursery, it is advised that you wait until a few weeks until all traces of pesticides/fungicides/etc are removed from the plants. smile.gif

nope, i'm not on their side and i haven't got what's rightfully mine. in fact, we had planned something if the permission is not issued in the nearest future, like burying them in the media with questions like "what happened to those 95 rtbs, 2 desert horned vipers and 1 mata mata confiscated from Anson?"

p/s: we got photographic evidence

QUOTE(vivtch @ Feb 4 2011, 02:37 PM)
Hi all, Happy CNY to our fellow forum members who celebrate CNY and Happy Holiday to the rest.

I have 4 RES and would like to feed them vege more often.  But I am very lousy with vege names.  The list I found at the beginning of this forum (listed below) is very helpful.  But the problem is, for most of them, I dont know what they are called in Chinese or Malay.

Butternut squash
Cactus leaves
Chicory greens (Escarole)
Collard greens
Dandelion greens
Endive
Mustard greens (Sawi)
Papaya
Turnip greens
Watercress

As such, I would like to ask what will be the local vegetables that I can get easily from market and feed regularly to RES.

I have given them kangkung, carrot top (leaves), carrot and sawi (choy sum) before.  Are those ok?  What else can I give?  Can I give sweet potato leaves?

This one, the mouth is yellowish, unlike the rest of my RES.  Wonder why?  I have given him/her carrot before?  Could that be the cause?

Thank you for your help.

vitch, try this link:
http://www.anapsid.org/resources/vegetablenames.html

it's a list of common names compiled from contributors worldwide (including Malaysia).

butternut squash - kuning/labu parang.
watercress - semanggi

as for dandelion and nopals (cactus pads), they are not available over the shelf at local supermarkets, you need to plant them for constant supply.

i have a ques.. to make it clear..

what tortoise species are allowed and what are not allowed to keep nowadays?

i see sulcata, leopard and russian tort continues to be sold widely, so i guess they are ok to keep and no problem getting license?
*
All tortoises are listed in CITES. they are OK to keep as long as their sources are legal, from licensed traders, and the sales come with CITES number on their receipt (so that a permit can be applied).

*new ruling stated that a copy of the import permit needs to be presented during application of permit. too much BS, since no right minded traders would want to reveal details of their suppliers to the public.

Recent occurences in this thread seems to be is getting wayyyy out of hand, so please let me re-iterate.

All tortoises and a long list of turtles are protected under Act 716 and Act 686, please be discreet in discussing them. While there are species that could be legally procured, it is quite apparent that some species recently exposed in this forum could not and had not been acquired legally throughout the whole history of permit issuance in this country.

i know that there are still threads in the Pet Store section advertising animals illegally/without permit, but most of them are old threads dating back pre-July 2010 and are revived by people who certainly had no idea about the implications of their actions. please do get informed on the status of animals before starting discussions.

And what is this thing about bringing "tortoise a month ago from overseas" without even knowing what you are getting? It certainly smells of smuggling, as legal shipments requires scientific/binomial details on various documents. please be noted.

And yeah, i need to be anal on this matter.

yup, they're good. i have no idea on the specific nutrient contents, but plants from genus Youngia/Crepis are edible by tortoise and known for their antiviral properties.

We had a Q&A session with the Wildlife Department in Shah Alam yesterday morning, and it seems like there is still a chance for keepers who still had not declared their scheduled tortoises and turtles.

For those affected by Act 716 (Peninsular Malaysia), it is advisable to declare any scheduled species before the grace period ends in June. Once the Act is fully operational (it had been enforced but so far no actions had been taken) there would be no excuse to not have permits as the authorities had given not once, but 2 chances to get them legalized.

Another session will be conducted in Langat area very soon, and every state branch in the peninsular will conduct them. So if you have any doubts, questions, or simply want to express concern or dissatisfaction, please attend these sessions. I will try to post information regarding times and venues as best as I could.
