Valve's Steam Coming to Mac on May 12

user posted image

The Mac OS version of Valve's digital distribution platform Steam will be released on May 12, the company confirmed today.

No other details on the launch were given--the announcement was a brief two sentences--though it will presumably debut alongside the native Mac versions of Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal and the Half-Life series originally slated to launch with the Mac client in April 2010.

Those that already own the above games via Steam PC will be able to download them free on Steam Mac. Future Valve games, like Portal 2, are slated to hit both PC and Mac simultaneously and will include both PC and Mac editions with a purchase of either.

I've just installed a hackintosh, so I'll try and do a cross comparison and check out how performance is.

Running a dual core overclocked to 3 ghz, 4gb ram, ATI 4850.

Actually with SC2 & the half-life engine coming to Mac OS X, I might be content with not multi-booting from now on.

Now only if they made BC2 for Macs...

I've installed OpenGL extensions viewer to see what is supported on my hackintosh -- some 3.0/4.0 functions are not supported. Anyone know what HL-engine is going to use?

u already paid for that 9600M GT chip. this is its time to shine~ hehe

so far valve games are pretty forgiving. im guessing the 9400M can play smoothly at low quality. no way to test cuz in bootcamp can only use 9600

I doubt all the games will launch simultaneously. Steam service will launch and maybe Portal 1 (which were tested).

I can't wait til they release Black Mesa Source (I bet you by that time HL2 EP3 STILL will not be out), then I'm going to play the half-life series starting by the first one all again.

I've given up on CS. Players know every corner, noobs that come in get wasted too quickly.

I've also given up on L4D2. I bought a copy in Malaysia but do you know if you're outside the SE asia region it won't work? Steam will report an error because it is region locked. So frustrating, and they won't refund my money.

Ars Technica Preview of Steam for Mac (Malaysian pun not intended)
Beta signup is closed, but Half Life 2, CS, Portal and Left 4 Dead 2 will be on. The only other third party publisher that's getting on so far is Tripwire Interactive (Killing Floor, Red Orchestra).

Tried CS Source at 2560x1600 resolution last night on a 9400M. All settings at High as recommended by the game. The stress test result was 30FPS. Not ideal but playable. If I turn everything down to Low settings, I get about 34FPS. HL2 was very nice ass it's not as hectic as CSS. Hopefully the proper Mac versions will be optimised even more n give us better FPS. 35-40FPS would be great for me.

Pardon my ignorance, why you need to run at such a high res? How big is your screen? blink.gif

For Steam games, some key are region lock, you probably need to activate the key under your account first in Malaysia. Once activated and attached to your Steam account, you should be able to login everywhere and play the game. hmm.gif

I activated L4D2 and played it fine in Malaysia. It doesn't want to work here in Australia. I e-mailed steam support, they asked me to take it back and ask for a refund.

This should be made illegal. I wasn't aware it wouldn't work in a different country. They are denying the use of what you've bought legally. Frustrated.

This is called: <Regional lockout>. Due to the law, piracy rate and other reason in different country. At first I have the misconception if the game activated under your account it will work anywhere but this is not the case after some Google search!

This post sum it up very well: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...9&postcount=115

The poster Cheesenium encounter same problem like you, getting the game to work in MY and AU. (Suprisingly he is is also a LYN member. laugh.gif )
Seem like gifted game, or the online Steam store purchase copy will work in different region. But not the physical L4D2 box copy selling in Malaysia store!

Yep, thanks for the links, wish I knew about it before I bought the boxed copy. So in fact, buying online with steam has its benefits for valve games, and not the other way around!! I thought I would save myself some trouble buying the cd instead of downloading 8+ gigs.

Next time, they should make it really clear that it is region locked and it doesn't work outside the country.

Added on May 8, 2010, 2:18 pmBunkerer: you do realize that link you provided -- http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...d.php?t=1193985 is also me complaining in the official steam forums??!

LOL, what a small world... Actually, no need the CD after install (Afterall, Steam will connect Internet and check for updates). Just copy out your Steam folder and you can run it on any "PC" and no need installation. But the other PCs must have Internet for Steam authentication.

Valve Software first hinted at the arrival of Steam for Mac in early March through the release of a number of leaked teaser images. Steam is a very popular digital distribution system for PC games and will be making its debut on Mac on May 12th. Alongside the release of Steam will be several Valve gaming titles that have never previously been seen on the Mac. We've had some hands on time with the late beta, and here are some impressions.

PC users, or Mac owners with Boot Camp, will feel at home with the client. Its simple interface is mostly unchanged in the Mac beta version. Tabs indicating its essential functions line the top of its window, displaying the virtual "Store," your "Library" of games, patch and update "News," and "Community" functionality. Invitations from friends, as well as advertisements for games, still pop up with the speed and appearance of a Growl notification. In fact, the entire program is smooth and fast. It works and, most importantly, without a hitch.

The Mini. Tried CSS at 2560x1600, the Stress Test did 30FPS average with all settings on high. Playable but not very nice. I end up playing it in windowed mode at 1920x1200. Hopefully the Mac version will be better optimised n I can play at full 2560x1600.

May 11, 2010 - Valve announced that Steam will launch on the Mac platform this Wednesday, May 12.

On subsequent Wednesdays, additional collections of Mac titles will become available, each designed to highlight specific functionalities of Steam on the Mac.

The first collection of Mac titles will demonstrate "Steam Play," which allows customers to purchase a game once and play it on all Steam supported platforms.

Portal, in addition to supporting Steam Play, will be the first of Valve's Source engine based games available on the Mac. Native OS/X support for the Source engine is also available immediately to licensees for use in their games.

Among the initial titles available on Wednesday will be Runic Games' critically acclaimed Torchlight. "We're very excited to be bringing Torchlight to the Mac," said Max Schaefer, co-founder of Runic Games. "Having Steam for the Mac solves so many problems for us as a developer. We look forward to our future games coming out on the Mac as well."

In addition to bringing the online functionality of Steam to the Mac, Valve will also make its Steamworks suite of publishing and development tools available on the Mac platform. These include product key authentication, copy protection, auto-updating, social networking, matchmaking, anti-cheat technology, and more. The features and services available in Steamworks are offered free of charge and may be used for both electronic and tangible versions of games.

For more information on Steam, please visit www.steamgames.com.

They'll start with 2 and roll out more as time goes on. It's a sensible marketing move to (re)introduce titles to the Mac community. I wouldn't worry about Valve games (Half Life, Counter Strike: Source, etc) since Valve owns Steam anyway. I'm glad Runic Games jumped on early with Torchlight, so I'm hoping more developers - indie or otherwise - do the same with future releases.

TF2 isnt available on the Mac yet. Maybe next Wednesday.

There seems to be a number of new releases that claim to be Mac compatible, like the Secret of Monkey Island bundle. Can anybody confirm?

My favourite Counter-Strike is not available yet.. wink.gif

The Steam app itself has quite a few bugs and it's eating up the RAM. blink.gif

doesnt download in sleep. you can turn off your display while it downloads tho.

portal performance is kinda ehhh. have to turn off fps killing video options like color correction and anti-aliasing. it still looks alright, playing native res 1920x1200.

Been playing Torchlight at full graphical settings without lag, bar a few instances of frame-rate drops. The body of my MBP doesn't even get warm after 1-2 hours of gaming. smile.gif

I fixed my slowdowns. Paragon 7.0 (allows you to read Win partitions) has some serious bugs. Upgraded to 8.0, and speed is fixed now.

I get >60 FPS.

Don't have my MBP with me now, but the download should be inside the .app file. It may be possible to dig into the app, look for the partial download and back it up. Can't guarantee it will work.

The alternative would be to try and leave the update window run. As I understand it the Steam servers have been hammered by eager Mac users this week, so connections can be bad.

Like ojimaru said, it maybe due to huge load of traffic causing it to be congested... Ill go back and try it out.. Hope I can finish DLing by tonight =) 3GB is hella big file

Make sure the console is enabled by going to Options > Keyboard > Advanced > Enable Developers Console.

While playing, press "~" on the keyboard and the console will pop up. Type "cl_showfps 1" into console command line. Press submit and your FPS will show up at the top right of the screen.

"net_graph 1" shows you fps, bandwidth usage, ping and other stuff too.

edit: to remove it, just change the number to 0.

Uh, it's... fast, snappy and I've found a strange need to open 20 tabs in each of 10 Chrome windows, each tab running some silly Flash BS while watching a DVD via an external monitor. At which point I'll be wishing for more power.

In short, it's intoxicating. Obviously.

too late, torchlight promo is over. its back up to $19.99 instead of $9.99. that is, unless you wan to buy it at full price.

dont bother with exchange rates, banks wont gut you too much, it'll be roughly the same everywhere. and its gonna fluctuate so you cant go looking for the lowest rate every time.

I did some simple benchmarking on Portal comparing the 9600M GT and the 9400M.

GeForce 9600M GT

this is the recommended settings:

user posted image

with recommended settings: 29 fps
all maximum except for texture detail on Medium: 29 fps
all maximum settings: 8 fps

the only issue for my system is texture, which is due to limited graphics RAM (256mb). those who have the 512mb ram should do better. the current MBP with geforce 330M should feel about the same lah. anything over 30fps isn't really noticeable, very smooth already biggrin.gif

GeForce 9400M

recommended settings:

user posted image

with recommended settings: 45 fps
configured to settings as recommended or 9600M GT (1st picture): 15 fps (50% decrease)

since MBW and MBP 13 only has a maximum resolution of 1280x800, this is what i would recommend for 9400M. can get 29 fps.

user posted image

geforce 320M should do better, but not as good as the 9600M GT.

hopefully this is helpful tongue.gif

Steam is a buggy beast. Not to say Valve hasn't been scrambling to solve the million and one bugs that pop up.

Unfortunately games perform better when you bootcamp into Windows and play there. I've been told the reason is that Windows' DirectX is far superior than the OpenGL OSX and Linux uses.

New games for Mac Steam

Killing Floor - $13.39
Madballs in Babo:Invasion - $4.99
Altitude - $4.99

Eschalon: Book I - $19.99

Steam software is still a little buggy on Mac with all those update etc.. But so far it never hangs on me... All the bugs are minor issues as you still can play games without worrying about it hang or crash not for me so far...

New (early) stats from Valve:

QUOTE
  • Roughly two thirds of all Steam Mac users are running on a laptop.
  • Portal (with the same code base across platforms) is one fifth as likely to crash on a Mac than on Windows.
  • And one week after launch, already more than eleven percent of all Steam purchases are for the Mac.

    Source

My only issue would be with the third piece of statistic. The 11% can't be considered anything more than a spike due to a) people trying out Steam and b) the Steam indie bundle being so damn cheap.

Haha the first one is definitely true as most people would opt for Macbooks instead of iMac or MacPro... Its definitely because its a new launch of steam on Mac with people trying out games (Same goes to any newly launched gadgets/events)... Windows based users have already bought their games and Im sure they are more on a slow pace now since nothing really big comes out...

Team Fortress 2 hasn't been ported to the Mac yet.

Altitude is available for the Mac. It was available to play for free last weekend, as well as a 50% promotion during the same weekend.

I think buying games through steam is definitely much faster for those valve produced games such as half life and CS as they are the producer... Furthermore its easy to get them through steam... Just need to care for the conversion rate =)... Just find those games with Mac + Windows logo and you are good to go...

You misunderstand. It was free to play for that particular weekend only.

Anyway, Steam News.

1) Portal updated
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

2) If you're a strategy game fan, Hearts of Iron 3 and Europa Universalis 3 Bundle on Steam has been released for US$29.98 (i.e. 50% discount on each game).

3) Or, Midweek Madness has LucasArts Adventure games, including 2 Indiana Jones games, Loom and the Dig, are on sale for US$4.99 (i.e. total saving of ~US$15)

and...
Half Life 2 Comes to Mac Tomorrow~~~~

Added on May 26, 2010, 11:58 amBut you have to buy the CD/DVD online as I dont think Malaysia does sell Mac DVD/CD games... Or maybe hard to find =)

My guess is that they will bundle Half Life 2 and Episode 1 & 2 together. It's highly unlikely they will charge a great deal considering the age of the game.

Those games are part of the Orange Box, but weren't available to play on the Mac OSX until now. Of course, if you already own the Orange Box, you won't need to buy the game again for the Mac.

So, Steam Macnesday gives us...

Half Life 2 - $6.99
HL 2 Ep 1 - $5.59
HL 2 Ep 2 - $ 5.59
EVE Online - $19.99

A little disappointed with with the price...

Maybe some of the data file is share with the Portal Game (After all they are using the same Source engine.), that is why the download is around 1GB (1013MB)? hmm.gif Just click download n let Steam sort it out for you, I believe it is smart enough to download whatever files you need.

Ojimaru, why the disappointment? Be thankful for Valve porting the Steam platform and open up a new market for games developer... laugh.gif Porting a game from DirectX to OpenGL is no easy job and not zero cost. I am very impress that Valve took the effort, time and resource to do it.

Currently Orange box is also offer for $20.99. (Include all the episodes + Team Fortress 2!)
If buy all the episodes separately: $18.17
Must well fork out extra $3 and you will get Orange box. It is like paying $3 more just for the Team Fortress 2... thumbup.gif

i guess Bunkerer is correct. i already download portal, so i already have the whole steam engine thing on. so steam juz downloads the necessary files for HL2. damn that's smart biggrin.gif

i tried out HL2 a bit... until the part where i met alyx. no problems so far. have to continue on my assignments now tongue.gif

This is the reason I'm disappointed. As I understand it they only needed to apply the conversion once to the Source engine, which powers most of Valve's games.

My guess is that the Mac Orange Box will be released when Team Fortress 2 makes the jump.

A little OT, but saw this interesting blip on Kotaku:

League of Legends Going Mac
http://kotaku.com/5549104/league-of-legends-going-mac

For those wondering, the unfortunately abbreviated game LoL is an RTS in the spirit of the ever-popular Warcraft 3 custom map Defense of the Ancients (aka DotA). The game operates on a free-mium model, i.e. free to play but paying cash unlocks better stuff.

Replaying Portal for the new achievement. XD Too much fun.

And after 12+ hours of Torchlight, I dusted off my Diablo 2 CDs and played them instead. Besides the game-breaking bugs on the Mac, Torchlight lacks so much of the depth found in Diablo 2. I guess the fact that patch 1.13 is finally live helps too.

btw, World of Goo for Mac is available on Steam. Link

Hi guys, I'm new to Steam..I just bought a game earlier this morning. Its Football Manager 2010.. But it wouldn't start downloading. Everytime I double click the icon in my library, an error came out saying "steam servers a currently busy to handle your request. Try again later". Is there something I did wrong? Have you guys encountered something like this before? icon_question.gif

Steam is and has been buggy even on Windows, so it's no surprise we're seeing the same amount of instability on OSX. Quit Steam and restart it to see if there are any new updates it needs.
