Strings rust because the manufacturer needs to make money. It is that simple. I use china made strings and it have not rust for the 5 years I had the guitar. The guitar only got stolen.

I think ernie ball will show a healthy balance sheet compare with other string makers. Strings had short life span yet people still buy them.
