Stick with ernie ball, but buy the titanium coated strings. I personally prefer Ernie ball slinkies over any other brand, and even if someone gives something else to me for free, i would pass.

I have a theory on this particular subject.. biggrin.gif

the level of how fast ur guitar strings to get rusty may be affected by ur guitar body itself... and also... how well ur guitar is stored..(room humidity etc...

I got a cheap strat and Im using a standard guitar string... on the other hand... my fren got an Ibanez gio and using the same standard strings like Im using...

But my guitar strings will not be rusty for at least 2 month.... but my friend's is quite the opposite... in two month... his guitar will be rusty to the point of unplayable...

So.. I believe... the wood used for the making of the guitar may affect the level of how fast ur guitar strings may rust... biggrin.gif

just my theory la.. xtau betul ke tak... biggrin.gif

ernie ball regular string easily to get rusted compare to d'addario... from my observation using them, coz im also hav prob with sweaty hand... my solution is to clean the string and apply the sewing machine oil... that would preserve the string from rusting easily

i beg to differ, i find that although d addario has a nicer, aggressive tone compared to ernie ball, they rust ridiculously quick. mine only lasted for 1 week and i play everyday sad.gif

rotosound strings doesn't rust that quickly, it took my strings almost 1 month to lose it's brand new metallic shine. (i don't use string cleaners and those stuff btw)

Strings rust because the manufacturer needs to make money. It is that simple. I use china made strings and it have not rust for the 5 years I had the guitar. The guitar only got stolen.

True, my friend's cheap Santa Cruz acoustic guitar has strings that never rust. Then it happens the G string broken, I replaced with Gibson G string. All strings still shiny but the G string rust after 1 month...

You might wanna try Curt Mangan strings ... can last quite long and tone is superb. Btw, Ernie Ball hybrid slinky can last me 4 months but eventually it snaps.

My experience, ernie ball super slinky is no no for me, bcoz within a week can rust already. About 2 years i stayed with ernie ball brand, and finally discover about d'addario.

d'addario, last longer at least for a month before, can see rust signs, and "I" strongly feel d'addario tone > ernie ball , especially when bending. And string snap quite often witn ernie ball, i can say out of 10 string snaps, 8 from ernie and 2 from d'addario.

factors;
1. sweaty palm, fingers
2. how u maintain ur guitar, do you wipe ur guitar each time after play?
3. humidity (whatsupbro)?? certainly yes, try leave ur guitar in an air conditioned room, see what happens.
4. once a week i apply string cleaners
5. is rust different from dust? i think so.....
6. each time after play do you keep guitar in bag/case or leave it on guitar stand.
7. are you the only person who play the guitar??

well. I had the same story with ernie ball and didn't like D'addario much.
So I tried the elixir nano web for a while and it was really good. but the tone was not exactly what I wanted. once I went to guitar store in cheras and bought my strings there and he recommended these nexus strings. They are amazing. I'm totally in love with them. They don't rust, they sound good and the cool thing is that the top strings are black color. I suggest u to try them. its pretty nice.

I think ernie ball will show a healthy balance sheet compare with other string makers. Strings had short life span yet people still buy them.

For me rusting is a secondary concern, I'm leaning more towards of how long can the string last it's "new string" tone, resonance and sustainability.

For example, I've been using d'addario .010 gauge(that one with the pale orange circle on the box) for 8 year now, my experience shows me that:

1 week:
That addictive new strings sound, all sparkly, crisp and full-on sustain.
=>The strings are a dream...

2 weeks: That bright new string sound diminishing a bit, the treble decrease and the tone starts to become warm; sustain is alright but noticeably decrease a bit when play solo a above the 12th fret.
=>The strings somewhat feel natural as it settled on the guitar as oppose to newly installed where you can feel the twang~ness of metallic vibes...

3 weeks: Tone is very warm while brightness is moderate to minimal; sustain audibly decrease but tolerable...
=> The strings overall tonality feels resilient when pluck, like it's run out of steam; the resonance of the string is imbalance, meaning the strings resonate/vibrate more vigorous but the volume is decrease which usually on my guitar - fret buzzing imminent for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings..

4 week: Tone is warm but starts to darken, lost of treble and brightness; sustain is about 35% less than new sets of strings.
=>You notice guitar skills decrease (decreased dexterity) a bit because the strings lost that ease to pluck;when you start to pluck fast (almost at shredding speed), the tone lacks commitment meaning it's not as sharp as it use to be hence muddy a bit. When soloing, the string's tone is not as commanding. Fret buzz can be heard on the 1st and 2nd string when play...

5 week:
Metallic sound almost diminish completely because the tone is too warm and dark; sustain is disappointingly shorten..
=> Dunno bcoz I change already changed strings at this point. tongue.gif

In my opinion, .009 gauge has shorter longevity than .010 gauge; but it's more brighter, twangier, agile and fun to play...

I use 010. because when you pick super fast, a heavier gauge is more composed under relentless stress. (power chords, heavy & fast strumming, shredding, bending aggressively, etc.)
I miss using .009 though, that lightness and gracious of touch with suits well for Fender Tele...

BTW I change string MAX every4 weeks; OR 3 weeks if playing 15 hours per week nod.gif

Everytime after you play just wipe. It doesn't take more than a minute. Wipe not just the top (the part facing the audience), but pinch the string and wipe also.

I use normal D'addario strings, and it can last me up to 3 months. (and I fill my guitar case with that bebola thingy)

When got a lot of gigs in a row, I normally use DR Coated strings (can get from Davis S'pore). The box look like condom casing, can't miss it.

i use super slinkys, and they feel the best to me, but they break so often i'm afraid of bending my high E string too much now.

out of all these i think the main factor is still humidity. when i was in malaysia, the strings would rust in about 1 week if i didn't play them, but when i play them every 1-2 days, they wouldn't rust, i mean eventually they still do, but much slower. and of course, remember to wipe your strings and guitar with some cloth of some sort to wipe the sweat off.

now i'm in nz and the air here is pretty dry. i still play my guitar almost everyday, but even if i don't touch it for 3-4 days (which i reluctantly had to do due to school work), the strings didn't rust at all.
