QUOTE(fahrenheitcore @ May 7 2010, 12:30 AM) can someone help me wit some of my problems? I am kinda noob Do include "maemo" or "n900" in your queries to uncle google for best results (e.g. "virtual keyboard missing keys maemo n900"). The main problem with the majority of *nix issues IMHO is the fact that I can't help you much unless I've been through the same thing. There are just TOO many variables in play.My N900 virtual keyboard, all the alphabets /words seems to be missing...it can pop up, but there is not even an alphabet there... I am really confuse why has this happened.... when I happen to install some of the application, the system wrote problems is something related to installing hildon... but there isnt any kind of application as mention except for the hildon theme and another one or two of them which are totally not related, same goes to the extras too it can't be found... another thing is that how do i copy and paste my x terminal results? example like df -h ( I would like to copy and paste the results to show and ask for help) the usage of my rootfs is already at 95% so is my ubi0:rootfs... i have seen some forums on the internet that this is a unhealthy figure how do I overcome this problem... Thanks in advance As for the xterm results, you see the arrow on the xterm toolbar? Click on it so that there's a red slash on it. This means you're in text select mode. Click and drag to select text, and click on the top bar (on the 'untitled') to bring up the app menu -> choose copy. Then switch to browser and Ctrl+V away. As for rootfs, the extras-devel repo catalogue eats up a LOT of this, so disable ex-d unless you need to do something with it. There's also some other steps on the maemo wiki on 'cleaning rootfs', but some of them are kinda iffy so BCOWYDYMBYD (be careful of what you do, you may brick your device). |

Wah, so many overclocking, while I'm actually underclocking (undervolting, actually) to extend batt life. Ran Titan's Ideal profile for awhile, then decided the drain wasn't worth the subtle speed bump.
Now running the XLV profile at 599-250. Not too much sluggishness and far more interesting battery life. Plus, has anyone heard of the WIFI battery drain bug? The WIFI drivers are bugged it seems, and SOMETIMES turning off WIFI will trigger a resultant increased battery drain that is about 2-3 times the norm, even on idle. Something only a restart would cure it seems. Ah, if Nokia really wants to do a half-assed job at mantaining Maemo, they should just release the entire code and declare it a fully open phone. And by fully, I mean fully including the darned dialler app. |

QUOTE(one1002 @ May 8 2010, 04:47 PM) ish..the battery suddenly drained so fast???now cannot turn on...need to charge summore...not even a day lah..huhuhu...charged until green light, unplug the charger at 7am...just playing it a lil bit, slept around 1pm,woke up at 4pm,the phone is already dead... Were you using the WIFI before? There's a supposed bug that causes the WIFI drivers to continue draining huge amounts of battery even when it's disconnected.applied evything from changing to GSM,lowered brightness to level 2..disable GPS positioning..and the phone is still stock standard.. Like i said earlier, the only way to resolve it is by rebooting/shutting down. But then again, my N900 eats through its batteries like crazy to begin with anyhow, lol. I concur with RiVN, 5-6 hours are what you should be expecting with heavy-ish use. This post has been edited by Eiraku: May 8 2010, 06:47 PM |

QUOTE(Borsch Soup @ May 8 2010, 07:06 PM) Wow, today Nokia got 3 pages full of their ads, really siaoz. Ah, the never ending march of progress...Anyhow, I've totally given up with autorotation and its quirks. Now setting the phone app on permanent portrait, and turning off browser autorotate. Hoping that will save enough battery for me to be able to rum on brightness level two again, one is far too dark at light lol. |

QUOTE(Borsch Soup @ May 8 2010, 07:39 PM) Can't comment much on pricing or value when my N900 is actually a hand-me-down. A FOSS phone in its fullest sense lol. Though I do agree that the browser is a work of art, and *nix in a phone (which isn't some dumbed down mobile implementation) with the ability to run LX freakin DE is just sublime. But it kinda sucks at being 'just a phone'. Once you realise it's not really meant to be one in the first place, you will start being happy with it though. As for phones worth splashing monies fo later, lets see if Nok gets their Meego phones right (say it with me Nok, UUUU-ESSSS-BEE HOST. If the N freakin 8 can do it...), OR if the Nexus Two/Milestone successor is worth the money. |

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ May 8 2010, 07:50 PM) the curious part some say after OC their battery life improve. Like me i feel performance and also improve battery life. I will upload my battery graph to share with everyone later Not so curious when you take into consideration the lower voltages that some of the overclock profiles run at. Lower voltages = lower power consumption, no? Personally, I'm generally okay with 600 as far as performance goes, so currently running stock unmodded XLV to try to make my brick run longer. For now at least. |

QUOTE(k-bkeat @ May 9 2010, 10:21 AM) Me too. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to kill procs (like F9? where the...). Now running Tonis's starving850 profile for Titan's kernel. Extremely low voltages, working like a charm. And I FINALLY found out why my batt was draining like nobody's business, it was the constant GPRS/EDGE connection I had running. With autodisconnect, my battery discharge curve looks like it would last a few days under moderate use, will update on that later. But seriously, autodisconnect is a great, great app. |

Now my N900 suddenly cannot use any Packet Data (or WIFI for that matter) connection edi... Network connections applet in Status Area also not working. It will either show "no connections detected" or refuse to start all together. Yee haw, time for my first reflash, ek? |

QUOTE(ahtiven @ May 10 2010, 03:50 PM) EDIT: what network service provider are you using? digi/celcom/maxis? I'm on Celcom. In my case, it's like "no network connections" in 2 seconds after a restart. No packet data connections can be made after that period. Calls work fine though, somehow, and the network settings are all in order. A restart returns me back where I started -> autoconnect right after restart, then connection lost, then nothing. No 3G/EDGE/GPRS/WIFI. hey there, with regards to your case, is it totally not able to upload/download package data at all? or rather does it happen intermittently? e.g. you're connected then it stops running after a while (msn disconnects, webpage not running), if you disconnect it and try to reconnect then it shows "no connections detected", but leaving it for like 5-10 minutes or a reboot would actually solve the issue... but then it goes back again.. i hope your reflash would resolve this issue. update here please. Just bluetooth, lol. Reflashing right now, waiting for CuteFM to finish transferring my easydeb image to the mem card first (it's a pain to download). |

Reflash done, everything back to normal...
Weird, but considering the amount of thinkering I did on it, not surprising. Will now go step by step in trying to find out what actually went wrong. If it happens again, off to a trip to Maemo bugzilla to file my first ticket. Now planning on installing stuff but otherwise running the thing stock standard (read: no enhanced kernel and or OCing) for the next day or so. Imma thinking that I really did "starve" the N900 from enough voltage by using the "starving" conf lol. |

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ May 10 2010, 10:20 PM) Because he can lol... I mean, Megan Fox lar... But seriously, the N900 is NOT a phone where you can reliably do whatever you want to do day in day out. It's a phone that you can mend, mold and at the same time it constantly surpasses your expectations of it... ... when it's not crashing or otherwise pissing you off lol. Sometimes the Gated Greenhouse that is the iPhone, or the wider Lake Gardens that is Android simply fits people's needs, I guess. It's safer over there compared to the Adventure (and wild beast) Filled Hutan Tropika of the N900. This post has been edited by Eiraku: May 10 2010, 10:27 PM |

QUOTE(RViN @ May 11 2010, 01:19 PM) *DISCLAIMER* I'm no expert myself, but here's what I know.About RootFS space, main important thing to note is, if you're installing things from the Red side of things (Extras-Testing and Extras-Devel), make sure they're at least a bit optified. Un-optified apps are apps that put most of the files it needs in the limited (but speedy) RootFS space rather then in /opt/. As such, the best way to free up RootFS space is to KNOW what you are installing. Next, is to uninstall unneeded stuff (especially unoptified stuff). The cited wiki entry includes moving things around in RootFS to /opt/ and creating symlinks. BE MINDFUL of messing around with files in RootFS, unless you KNOW EXACTLY what they do. Remember, what's safe for other people might or might not be safe for you, *nix is just like that. And some files are in RootFS in the first place for a reason (remember, RootFS is speedy), for instance, the MicroB engine files - MicroB starts faster with the files left in RootFS; or something. Remember the *nix mantra, "If you have to be told what to do, you have a high potential of messing things up". But "messing things up" is why most people go to *nix in the first place. That said, have fun optimising your RootFS (or any other part of Maemo for that matter). Just have the flasher app and eMMC/Firmware images close by when you tinker (to reflash when you muck up), and backup as much as you can. As for me, tinkering step by step, backup-ing all the way. Currently running stock kernel with some theming mods, no hildon-modified and it's funny how things are NOT as hairy as it was before. Phone app is behaving well (used to lock system in portait all the time), and the system is generally very stable with little by the way of slowdowns.. Will try adding Beacon widgets next, see how things pan out. EDIT: For the guy above, try googling "Sudo Gainroot". And remember, SUDO stands for Super Users Destroy Operating systems. Lol. QUOTE(Dominus91 @ May 11 2010, 04:57 PM) dont enable EXTRA TESTING anf EXTRA DEVEL in app manager.. Check my post up there. last night i enable EXTRA TESTING.. and found three application update.. then i update them.. today morning.. the phone is died..damn irritating.. early morning brain not yet fully function then i have this honour gift to myself..i have sent it to store for repairing.. i have learn a lesson.. even EXTRA repository category i also not dare to download more.. :-( Summary: The Nokia Flasher + eMMC Image + Firmware Image = Reflash = Win when phone dies. But yeah, UNLESS you know what you're doing Extras-Testing and Devel is PURE EVIL... Lol, I should put that in my sig... Now I understand why threads at Maemo.org have enforced an Extras-Devel is DANGER warning on all beta apps in devel... Plus: Enabling Ex-Dev = 10-20 megs of RootFS space eaten by Download Manager's catalogue data edi. As for me, I turn it on when I need it only. Ex-Testing has been fine for me so far. |

QUOTE(ahtiven @ May 11 2010, 05:45 PM) Tried. It's optified and good for a certain breed of web browsing (reading comics - microb sucks at this). And the portrait mode + keyboard is sublime. Plus you have turbo mode (aka opmini server hijack mode) for slow net connections. And it looks GOOD. And UI is slightly faster then MicroB, somehow. Is that it even possible? Shame it doesn't have flash yet and is not entirely stable. Crashes some on my N900. Also the opera guys need to learn how to use an awesomebar. The url/searchbar combo just doesn't work anymore. Have not tried Fennec much (tried some, slowed up everything, uninstalled). But Opera I would keep. Good for those pesky sites that do not show up well on MicroB (especially when I have mine set to look like UCWeb, all HUGE and no zooming needed). Plus a real history list! Hnggg... QUOTE(ahtiven @ May 11 2010, 06:09 PM) Fennec lags at times, that's for sure. unless you tweak and disable plugins/images/java/etc. but what's the point? lawl. but im still putting high hopes on mozilla team to pull some stunts on upcoming updates to fennec, hey it's only in beta atm remember? intergrated search/address bar. MicroB uses this. Firefox/Fennec uses this. Opera was trying too hard to flatter (or is it imitate) Safari Mobile that it stuck to the whole address bar + saperate search bar thing. Waste of space if you ask me.agreed that microb is a lot more responsive so i guess i will try Opera in a short while. what's an awesomebar? |
