between lacquer and acrylic paint, which one is better? for tamiya
-i saw mr hobby product is quite costly. if i didnt find any thinner for my tamiya acrylics, then its waste for my money, i bought quite lots of paint laaa sad.gif
*
Both are good and both can be used. It all depends on what you wanna do with them..
Hand paint = acrylic + enamel(small parts)
Air brush = lacquer, acrylic also can & enamel.

Can I ask a stupid question ?

Can I use my buncho poster colour to paint my gundam rifle ? ( just a little bit on its rifle )
*
No... Buncho paints would not stick on it properly.

Well , ok.
That means must be tamiya or mr.hobby only can ?
*
For hobby purpose yes...
alternatives can use industrial spray cans which are suitable for plastic like Anchor brand. Spray at your own risk

ive used mr hobby, and as khai62 said, its also quick dried,
-i am hand painting my gunpla
-and now back to acrylics (tamiya)
*
That is why you are unable to achieve the metalic feel.
Airbrush you can get the effect because of smoothness where as hand painting is difficult with brush strokes

airbrush and compressor, cost 200 only?
air brushing also need spray booth
im hand painting straight on gunpla parts
*
Just the handpiece can cost less than 200 but some china brand type usually

QUOTE(starkiller @ Mar 15 2013, 12:14 AM)
I was interested in using AB at first but was turned away by the price (am also surprised one can cost less than 200), have to use thinner, the post-cleaning and troublesome to do it in a condo. I'm quite satisfied with the results so would rather hand-paint for now
*
If you're from PJ, then you just need to get the handpiece and paints. There's a place called ICW@aman suria which provides compressor and spray booth FOC.

QUOTE(nazrul90 @ Mar 15 2013, 12:37 AM)
let me tell you, I starting to hand painting since 2011
I gonna list the experience I have

-some paint turn out dont stick well on surface, like lacquer gold and white
-different paint,different thinner-paint ratio..
-brush stroke, it is so frustrating
-uneven surface.. I used lacquer and enamel paint.. most of time screwed

hand painting however useful for painting for small detail part which spray can and airbrush couldnt reach

QUOTE(nazrul90 @ Mar 15 2013, 12:12 AM)
whatever floats your boat, you are just wasting your precious time hand painting on such big kit
*
You can't discourage people by saying that, Hand painting can be very tedious but if you have the patience, end result can be satisfying as well. I know a few who hand paint very well like the HK fella who modded the sazabi into a horse, fully hand painted.

I know but it is very hard to maintain good result sad.gif

but hand painting is a good practice for all first timers. I started hand painting and sucked at it too and slowly evolved to AB. ahaha

QUOTE(rayloke @ Mar 15 2013, 03:31 PM)
for airbrush, it's personal preference; depends on what a modeler wants. If u want a good finishing why not? if u want to have fun, quick snapfit n play the kit, then i wont recommend it.

For the cost, i have seen people who complain they dont have the money for air brush set but they have boxes n boxes of model kit.

basic set:

hand piece + compressor = RM500~RM600.

Take average:  How much is RM550? It is 1 MG unicorn (RM160) + 1 MG sinanju (RM230) + 3 HG kits (RM160)  (agak agak la the price tongue.gif)

Again depends on what u want. I m the type who prefer to have 5 nicely painted kit with an air brush set; compare to 10 snapfit kits......
If u r very unhappy with the painting, and having a nicely displayed kit is what u want; again, why not air brush?

be careful of zippo fluid too, too much may start to "eat" away your base paint(lacquer).

err i want to ask simple question, besides thinner for certain paint like tamiya enamel thinner for tamiya enamael paint, do it has any alternative? because using tamiya thinner for air brushing is quite expensive
moreover, what paint do people here recommend for silver paint? mr hobby?
*
for enamel paint, alternative is zippo fluid but have to be careful when rubbing enamel paints off with zippo will cause color fade.
As for thinner, it's the only choice. Hobby thinner is the most suitable to mix with hobby paints. It is expensive than industrial thinner but how much do you use it. i bought 1 litle hobby thinner and lasted me like 2-3 years.
Of course when you clean your AB equipment, you use industrial thinner not hobby thinner.
Silver colors, either mr hobby paints or gaia's paint. Both are good enough

Shauno,

Regarding about putties, I know there are three kind of them.
1) basic putty - apply on the surface. Lacquer based.
2) polyester putty - apply on the surface and small gap. Easy to be sand.
3) epoxy putty - apply on the huge gap. Difficult to be sand.

I motice many modelers are using resin for recasting. So, may I ask, can we apply resin (Wave brand, etc) on plastic model kit surface instead of putty? Will resin melt plastic model kit completely? Thank you.

Cheers,
*
1) basic putty to cover sink holes/seam lines(not recommended for huge gaps)
2) polyester putty main purpose is for reshaping your parts not fill in small gaps and yes, it's easy to sand but very bad for health when inhale the "dust" so best wear a mask when sanding
3) epoxy putty is also for reshaping and filling big holes. It's more durable. It is hard to sand when it hardens, that is why usually we sand or shape it when it's "half" dry.

All of this can do reshaping, filling, etc. It's just that see which suits your situation or what you wanna do with it

Resin is for recasting and only recasting AND water effects(look like liquid form) and no it wont melt on the kit with minimal amount. smile.gif
