The KL International AV Show Is Back!

Block your dates from 23rd to 25th July 2010 (Friday - Sunday)

Time : Friday - 11.30am to 7.30pm, Saturday & Sunday - 10am to 7.30pm
Venue : JW Marriott Hotel, KL.

Sony is making a comeback to the show.

This year main focus would be 3D. The main ballrooms are literally 3D showcase by Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and Toshiba.

I guess this year will be more on HT.

IMS distribution will be taking one of the conference room in Level 4. Expect to see JBL flagship's Everest 66000 there along for movie setup with 13-Ultras doing the LFE job.

so fast it's already 1 year passed since last year KLIAV

this year we have a special new exhibitor "MAXX AUDIO VISUAL TRADING", I think this booth would attract many HT elites especially from LYN forum smile.gif

Last time I went for the show was when it was at Yow Chuan Plaza. Eons ago. laugh.gif Still remember I wanted to grab a Yamaha subwoofer, took it with me to the cashier there, 1 stupid a$$ old man curi curi grab it from behind while I was taking out money from my wallet. Then he paid 1st n it was the last unit. vmad.gif

Hopefully the Yamaha soundbars got discount. Then I can get a Yamaha from the show at last. Hope no dirty ol man grab from behind again. laugh.gif

For Soundbar might as well go straight to Desa Home Theater... Think can get a good bargain there... also no need to worry about dirty ol man...
I am not promoting that place but the last time I was there seem like they are trying to get rid of their older model YSP.
I think Harvey Norman also trying to sell off their open-box unit. But not sure how's the quality as not sure of the abuses to it. The price I saw last time was 30% off RRP and can still further nego.. and included the sub-woofer as well.

Yeah, can't wait for this year KLIAV. See can get bargains or not. Also time to take antidode for the upgrade itch...

For outgoing models, price is reasonably good. For fast moving and popular models, not really so. From my experience after attending AV Fest (by The Star; light years ago) and KLIAV for as long as I could remember, the price difference is not much and at times, no difference compare at shop (if you bargain).

Some ppl see this event as a platform to see / listen or to check out the latest technology that are available here. Last 2 years were about BD and FHD. This year, it's all about 3D smile.gif

You should showcase Xtreamer and HDX there. Sure gives Ideatool's Dvico a run for its money.

A while back, I went to Singapore and auditioned Avalon Isis, which is much talked about among serious high-end audiophiles.

KLIAV: For tube lovers

Valve enthusiasts will not be left out of the action at the KL International AV Show this weekend.

The beautiful - in terms of looks and sound - Unison Research amps will be making a comeback to the Malaysian hi-fi scene.

A & L Audio Station was appointed its dealer just weeks ago and Unison Research pre and power amps will be on demo in one of its rooms.

The system will comprise the Unison Research CD player, the Unison Research Reference Pre and Reference monoblock power amps driving a pair of Focus Audio Master 2.5 speakers.

In another room, A & L Audio Station will demo VTL amps driving speakers from the Dali Euphonia or Helicon II range.

A & L Audio Station will also be displaying the PS Audio PerfectWave Transport and matching PerfectWave DAC.

One of its rooms will be used to demo a HT system comprising NAD AV amps, PSB speakers and Velodyne sub-woofer.

If you dun mind walking Berjaya Times Square got flat rate of RM7 for the whole day. But you have to walk quite a bit. Sg. Wang parking is Rm3 for the first hour and RM1 for the consecutive hour. The rest of the buildings around there i got no clue.  wink.gif

waste of time. So crowded and everyone moves like a herd of cows, slowly and in a line. When one wants to exit also cannot, they have to follow like a cow right till the end, few floors later.

Stair cases leading to other floors sometimes stink with incosiderate people smoking.

Some AV rooms also, got people smoke in the toilet. How come JW Marriot allow this?

Even if JW Marriot disallow smoking in the rooms but we all know too well the Malaysian attitude, they don't care. This is nothing new. doh.gif

In order to avoid the crowd, I always ensure I am among the first to enter so that I have more time to browse through all the rooms at a more leisurely pace. whistling.gif

The many times I went with my buddies and wife, we were at relax mind and stroll room after room to observe, listen & blend into the fair.
We went up and down twice last year (re-enter after good lunch at the Pavilion) and the joy of experiencing with mid to high end systems keep smoke / cow's story out of our minds.
Managed to get my wife a free 2Gb Philip MP3 last year when signed up for Hardware Zone Magazine and plan to get something again this year.

Yes, I do remember seeing some lost cows who could not find the best toilet at the lower ground floor.
On smoke, where in KL / PJ that you cannot find people smoke at side / emergency staircase or toilet?

Mai Kai Tan, you gave good comments and rest assure that I'll let the organiser know so something could be done to improve the situation.

I hope the organiser put some nice gift for the contest. Malaysians are generally motivated with a nice contest to enter and in the past, the grand prize has been some crap. Real crap.

Shocking. Big companies sponsoring such an event and millions of ringgit in transaction and the heavy RM10 entrance fee, I have no idea why they give crap gifts in the contest. The minimum one should get is a good branded 50 inch plasma.

On the smoke issue, just because people do it does not mean it should be tolerated. There is a rise in snatch thefts, does not mean we should say its normal and biasa. Otherwise don't call it International because International events in other countries don't have smoking in their events at all. Should just call it Malaysia AV show.

fully agree. Have seen people and some dealers spitting in the staircase area. If they are not spitting, they are on their handphones talking and digging their noses to glory.

How to buy from such people? Like that, you buy speaker, sure got some gold (bugger) somewhere on the speaker or receipt.

The organiser need to improve on such things. Infact, the organiser need to go to International shows in the UK or Europe and emulate how such events are really organised. No smoking at all and no polystyrene lunch boxes everywhere.

Seeing fish and chicken bones here and there is disgusting.

Gotta admit that I'm surprised by the amount of negativity that is being put out by some with regards to the AV show. I can understand that in a lot of cases Malaysia has things more expensive than others but having an AV show is not only about cheap stuff guys. Its a way for manufacturers and retailers to showcase under one roof new models, new gadgets, and clear some old stuff. Contrary to popular belief, home AV is not as lucrative business as many of you out there believe. Granted, some make fantastic money out of it, but so do other businesses alike.

End of the day, just like all businesses, they are there to generate revenue and pay the bills. Some more so than others. This coupled with all the rants about us getting substandard stuff. Things are improving, a couple of years ago, not many in Malaysia heard about SVS, Mark Seaton and other small success stories. With the wide spread of internet literacy, the public is more knowledgeable. So, like all things, be patient. Our tax laws are as they are, our tax laws. Different countries have different rules, thats the fact.

Just like any other country, there is room for improvement. Hey, unlike some of u out there, this is the only country for me to call home at the moment, I'm just going to make the best of it and see what I can do to improve it. My way, is to give people advice based on data and opinions on the various products...what about u?

fully agree. Most people think AV show is some cheap sale. I think they get this idea and concept based on PC Fairs. But in reality, like you say, it is a place to showcase new technology. Like International car shows in Europe or Cebit, new technology is showcased and introduced to people. They want to get feedback on prototypes.

Its a pity Malaysians go for exhibitions hoping to get discounts and cheap stuff. Even more sad when people go to look at girls.

From experience, you can get much cheaper lah bargaining one to one with a retailer at his premises with the comfort of coffee and tea. The same with PC Fair also, so much cheaper to buy in LYP after bargaining. Comfortable somemore. Go to Amcorp, you can bargain to glory and get the best deal in town.

Its high time to re educate the poeple that exhibitions are really exhibitions, it is to merely highlight new technology.

malaysian in general ,more than anything else, have unquenchable thirst for bargains and free-shows. rather embarrassing as most visitors or potential buyers at these AV shows are from the middle to upper class

although civic consciousness has improve since independence , we need leaders or family head to set examples . we will eventually succeed in planting civic responsibilities mind set to our children but more time is required to educate them but first let us be the role model.

meanwhile, it's showtime at the Marriott

Improvement??? I see. Maybe the organiser is charging RM10 entrance fee to deter more smokers / cows from showing up at the show???
South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world, and I would not advise people not to go see the World Cup there???

As long as there are international brands and products showcase, KLIAV shall keep the "international" word and I am proud that such event come to our door step. Seeing, observing and listening to the systems is the only testimony I can tell my ears which system is the best; just like wine, "The Best Wine Is Still The Wine That You Like Best" (irrespective of price, mid or high end).

Its a hard act to improve the environment at the show actually. Imagine this, the only way one can showcase their system with full blast with minimal interruption to your neighbours would be a room. So hotel comes naturally in this respect as a show venue , not KLCC convention hall or other open space venue.

Its easier to control and to clean up the environment in one open big space, but its not going to work in a hotel environment.

Then the size of the room and the resources comes in too. I have seen the staff actually stock everything inside the hotel room toilet, they even eat their lunch there ! So do expect difficulties and lack of facilities to provide good environment for the customers. I mean, they can't even keep their own show room due mainly to lack of space.

As a customer, I would expect draw back such as this. Nonetheless, its always good to point it out for future improvement sake.

Yes I have seen this. It is rather shocking. I saw DVD players stacked up on the toilet bowl seat. Quite unhygenic. Most people normally don't even touch the toilet bowl seat in a public place and here, our dvd players are sitting on it.

a year or so back, i went to every single home expo in the klang valley, as i was reno-ing my home...initial intention was to get great bargains for everything i need...after visiting all the expo throughout 2009, and after speaking to a few friends who happens to have the same idea as me, we all came to a conclusion...expo is for manufacturer's/agents & distributors to showcase their products..definitely not a place for bargain as you can get the same price or even cheaper shopping from one outlet to another...rather than bargaining at the expo...true..some items may be a bargain, but may not be your cup of tea....

even PC fair is the same...u do not get great deals in PC Fair...you can get same deals negotiating with the sellers from their outlets...then hv to pay exorbitant parking fee in KLCC area, the crowd molesting your every body parts as you work your way through, the no-attention given to you by sellers...hv to buy a trolley to transport your PC/printer to the car park...why buy at PC fair really dun understand...

BD, CD & DVD or maybe some interconnects and HDMI cables may be of sale, but i hope guys going to the KLIAV are not expecting a 50% discount of major HT brand equipments...just go and enjoy the showcase of all latest HT equipments, new tech etc etc...

just coming back from the show....nice event. not as crowded as i thought. i went there at 12.30pm.
it's just a tad stupid that it's held at different floors such as level 7..then 4. the wait at the lift is too long although there are many lifts. using the stairs is faster.

the only freebies you'll get is a small coupon for lucky draw and a small bag for you to stuff in brochures. sweat.gif

Desa is clearing stocks for the 2009-2010 series AVR. some latest demo units are for sale at low price too.

Sony and Panasonic are showing their 3D displays. AE-4000 projector is for demo. Optoma HD20, HD85 and Vivitek H1080 are everywhere. Avatar is everywhere too doh.gif

htkaki has HD20+92" screen for RM4999. nice deal! drool.gif

Samsung also showcasing their 3D displays but in the right corner on the 4th floor (below the stairs). They had a non 3D full HD 63" for sale but was unable to provide me with model number (it was going for RM10k display unit price) Panasonic had some pretty huge displays on showcase; 108" and 65". Very nice but probably take a few lifetimes of earnings to afford one.

I'm impressed with the real 3D titles (Monster vs Aliens). Too bad no Avatar in 3D, the 2D to 3D converted picture isn't as great.

Checked out the Dune player too on the 8th floor. Pretty sweet I think, but if I decide to go with a 3D display, then I'll have to get a 3D blu-ray player so I won't need the Dune. But very impressive player that.

Ton of movies on the hard drive to display, and only 2 bluray I saw earlier (Baraka and Apocalypto) displayed on the 50V20K plasma.

I believe the Denon AVR-1911,2311 and 3311 were up for display/sale as well on the 4th floor. Can't remember which room it was in.

One good thing this time, I didn't see anyone smoking or spitting in the staircase area. I was there early so I wouldn't know about the later crowds. Just a little weird, do companies really display and demonstrate products in tiny hotel rooms? Was this to save cost or something for the expo?

Ahh, not sure. I saw the prices at a glance since I wasn't buying em.

I think the 3311 was over 7k, the 2311 over 5k and the 1911 over 3k.

Maybe someone else can confirm?

Guys, due to heavy schedule on the weekend, might not be able to make it, but would appreciate if there's anyone aware of price of 58'', 60'' or 63'' FullHD plasma in the AV Show?

Like Samsung 58'' C6500, Samsung 63'' C7000, or some other 60'' offering.

Cheers

Yep, not a bad offer. The C6900 3D blu-ray player alone is RM1999 (RRP is RM2499)

Starter kit with 3D movie/glasses is RM999.

But still pricey I think the tv.

actually 3D is not such a big thing to me, most important is the "SIZE" and the PQ. Been tinkering with the idea of getting a good projector as my primary display, read a lot lately but still ain't really sure whether the projector is up to the task. Should decide soon :-)

desa HT selling Mirage omni 5.1 speakers set at 5.6k
i like the sound from tis set of speakers
centre is omni c150, front is omni 350, sub and surround dont know

i think is a discountinued product, as i saw in website, it was a 2006 product and the official website do not hv record anymore.

i belive can get cheaper price if buy from other country. but beware of shipping cost though.

rogers ls3/5a, opera, PMC, mirage, harbeth not bad

well, i need to mention opera. eventhough is a big floor stander in a small room, but the tuning is good. not boomy for bass. light bass. but a little bit bright to me. but indeed a good speakers.

was expecting usher BE dancer II floor stander, but too bad only hv bookshelve. but not bad also, considering small size but with good bass extension. but tis yr the tuning a bid muddy, too much bass that covers the mid and high. last yr's setting was better. anyway, good speakers too.

was expecting sun fire on demo too, but tis yr seems like more towards golden sound.

vivitek projector is having nice colour, i mean the high end 1. optoma hd 82 got some pixelization in picture when it was on demo the cartoon (i think should be monter war inc.). occur quite often though.

another anticipating product is SVS, heard of many good review. but when it was on demo, i cant really feel much punch when it was playing die hard 4. and sorry to say tat it is quite noisy. details not clear. and i even heard "piak" sound at the and of A-B demo. then i showed an awkward face, then the guy i think also noticed it. then looked at me the same way also. haha... htkaki, dont sue me ah...lo. anyway, i belive is due to room size or setting ba....nxt time if hv chance will listen again.

one more thing, the 3D tv from sony is good! when u look at it from any angle, it still able to maintain 3D image. panasonic 1 if u go off from middle axis, then can see shadow in picture. sony 1 see from any angle also 3D. on top of tat, the 3D game on ps3 was really awesome. it is stardust HD. wow!
also, i noticed more show girls and hot chicks on show tis yr. i think the trend is growing...

lastly, nice guy from tropicana audio. nice guy and friendly.

cougar richard, won't sue you lah. It's due to the room itself. It's hollow fiberboard for the whole room. The LFE is literally gone.

Please come our demo room and feel for yourself. All SVS owners who came commented the same. It's a pain to work that way in such a room. Next year, we will get a room at either Level 8 or 7. These rooms have brick walls. If you want to feel some nice bass, go to Flagship AV room at Level 8, Revel Room near staircase. It has a PB13-Ultra on demo.

Cheers

just finished walking 3 hours, nothing much exciting. This year had less movie demos in the upper floors, mostly music demos. Playing avatar everywhere, boring. Only 1 was playing dark knight with huge svs upstairs, very nice sweet bass powerful. There are lots of media players being offered. The tvix package was very good, lots of freebies. I bought a toaster from them. And a tacima power conditioner/regulator too. The vivitec projector is quite good as well as optoma hd20 for price.

Added on July 24, 2010, 3:39 pmAlso there's some shop in the tvix room selling mts movies for rm15 each!

Several thoughts about the KLAV 2010.

1. Every year the audiophile equipment gets demoed using audiophile recordings. I'm not an audiophile so I don't know what do they listen to at home, but it is a waste for these incredible equipment to play only audiophile recordings.

There are several impressive and very expensive speakers this year.

2. Projectors are not taxed according to Malaysia's custom book. Yet the prices for projectors are always higher than US MSRP (EU's tax laws are different). The prices for PT-AE4000 at this year's KLAV is mindboggling.

3. At the end of the exhibition, Berjaya Video always have a sale. This year's sale is pretty good. RM60-70 per title for Blu-ray Discs. But seriously, why set the MSRP at RM120-159 a title to begin with? I understand that BVN may have its hand tied when it comes to pricing but they should also educate their Hollywood distributor that a lower BD/DVD pricing would reduce piracy and rejuvenate rental market.

4. 3D made a big show. A 55" is most impressive if you sit about three feet away; in 2D that is a little overwhelming. Super Stardust 3D on the PS3 sucks you right in.

The Trimon ZM-240 W was the surprise of the day. It's a PC monitor that uses a Z-screen on top of a 24" LCD panel. This method enables the use of cheap circular-polarized glasses instead of expensive active glasses used by NVIDIA. Flickering was absent on the 3D game. A Malaysian OEM - Pensonic perhaps - should try to make one 40" Full HD panel that is compliant with the 3D standards out there (3D Full HD).

The LG CF3D projector was not showcased. It's a dual-light engine, single-lens projector that uses two pairs of 3-SXRD panels and a Z-screen, which enables users to use cheap circular-polarized glasses. That is a killer equipment that would have overshadowed a lot of the projectors at the show.

5. The reusable bag was a good move by the organizers.

Bro, go to Level 8. look for Flagship AV room with Revel Ultima Salon 2. There is a SVS PB13-Ultra (rosenut finish) being hooked up to it. Politely ask them to demo movie for you. It should be impressive. Our demo room is not ideal (pls refer to SVS thread). Hope to see you tomorrow.

Anyway, you should come to our showroom toe get the real deal of SVS experience. robinlim, s6xs9x, bryanlee, hdwarexpert, butterfinger, mpyw, jchong anfieldude, ar188 and most of them who have tested or been using SVS said that it lacks the oomph in that room since they knew how a SVS sub should 'behave' even if it is a 12-NSD.

Yup I went to that room also. They were playing Ip Man 2 at the time. The mid bass dynamics were excellent.

Hey htkaki, do you know if the JBLs were supported by SVS subs? I didn't see any subs but might be hidden behind the screen.

I was impressed too with the scene where IP Man vs Samo Hung.

I think the speaker is JBL Project Everest DD66000. (the most ambitious loudspeaker in the history of JBL).

I'm glad you like our JBL Project Everest demo. Many people have commented positively to me regarding our Project Array demo as well.

For those of you looking for good bargains on AV Receivers, we (Flagship AV - Starhill 7, 4th Floor) will be having some extremely good deals on the current Harman Kardon AVRs today. This offer is for one day only, it took a lot of negotiation to allow me so sell at this price. (So low, I can't put it in this forum!)

Please note that, unlike others shop's offer of last year's models, all the models we are offering is the newly launched HK AVR x60 range (yes, it is HDMI 1.4 compliant!).

Hope to see you guys there!

Was it just me or was there no 3DTV from Panny? I remember their bigger displays, but I just cannot remember seeing their VT series plasma.

The other 3DTVs from Sony and Sammy while good, had way to much crosstalk whenever the head moved a little, in my opinion.

I liked the JVC HD35 with the anamorphic lenses, pretty bright and well calibrated.

The Panny AE4000 was ok but badly calibrated. The Vivitek PJs were not too bad nor the Optomas.

the panny 3D plasma was there right across the entrance and i think it's more impressive than the sonys and sammys but i can't see what model series cause it's too dark . i ask the panny showgirls and she dont know what model . i did check the back panel and the hdmi connector slots looks different from the V20

Ah well, I missed it then. I guess I'll just wait to calibrate one and find out.

The other 2 were just not good enuf for me with the amount of cross talk

3D spectacles were a plenty at Sony show area and there are 4 screens on 3D demo i.e. Worldcup / Football (with Shakira), 3D Game, Fish / Ocean & Scenery.
Next to Sony, Pana concentrated on large screen 85" (RM148,000) + 105" (??) and Full HD projectors; minimal on 3D (1 screen).
Shame to Sammy who only display multiple combined displays for commercial use (next to Saony & Pana.)

Our successful shopping list includes:
(1) 2 Units of ONKYO TX-SR608 (Best deal from the entire fair; cannot reveal to protect Vendor)
(2) 2 Pairs of EPOS ELS 303 Floorstanding speakers (Offered at RM920/pair)
(3) Couple of Bluray Discs selling at RM60 each.
(4) Sony Bluray player ( could not remember model)
(5) Couple of black albums which are rare to find nowdays.

FYI, we spent 6 hours at the fair and have not come across people smoking at the stairs (so minimal smoke smell also).
We do not see people queuing like cows at the lift but notice happy / anxious faces waiting in orderly manner.
Skip the HWM freebies of Ipod Speaker Dock + Mouse.

Favorite demo at the fair :
(No.1 Concert) David Foster follow by Celine Dion (Vegas Concert)
(No.1 Movie) Avatar and none noticeable at No.2
(No. 1 Vocal) Tsai Ching (saw only 2 Concerts)

jchong, about your question...... I thought the clue is evident here :

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1383495/+60

This year turnout is quite bad. I have the time to audition some nice systems since there is not much crowd. Went to Guru Jo Ki's room to audition his system. Chat a bit and enjoyed a few songs. Very nice sound lah thumbup.gif Then, auditioned the Manger system. Impressive bass notes. Not able to have a proper audition of the Nagra since there are a few people in there sad.gif .

Went to CMY to get some soothing nice music out of Clearaudio and ProAc. Stuck my butt there for a good 15-20minutes. Chat with John Yew. Then went to my buddy's room to check out his Project Everest. Ron Stimpson tagged along. He is also keen to meet Yee Phok but unfortunately he is not in. Then Ron said, "wait a minute..... I recognize the LFE's signature." biggrin.gif Today, spent quite some time walking around to check out every single floor with Ron. He went to check out a competitor's sub too since their demo room is only a stone throw away from ours.

Also went to Audio Perfectionist. Chat with Simon. Never knew that he is interested in getting a better sealed sub (potential cust tongue.gif )

I agree with htkaki. The crowd this year was really small. I had no trouble finding parking at JWMarriot which used to be impossible (they even closed it some years) previous years.

Went in and out about 2 hours. Went home with the Dvico Tvix N1 + HDD Toaster. I completely forgot to stop by and say hi to htkaki also. Sorry dude sad.gif

No worry, bro smile.gif My booth is not easy to find. It is at the corner of Video Ezy. Not a nice room. A lot of visitors. Some came in and just asked, "Are you htkaki?" Then, shook hands, chat a bit and left. Very weird

Next year, will choose Level 8 if I do participate. The solid concrete walls should do justice to the SVS subs. However, will only bring midrange stuff for demo since the room size is rather small. Power w/o control is just as bad

i had a hard time searching for your boardroom because it's located at a corner. acoustically wise, yes, it's really a bad room. feel so sorry for you cos you can't let the sub to unleash it's full potential.

those hotel rooms in level7,8 are super small. i think your future neighbour playing those high end audiophile power amp will get angry by your powerful sub. sweat.gif

Me too. Took delivery of my 2 pairs of ELS 303 yesterday and already hookup to my TX SR-Onkyo 608.
Plan to get the Center Speaker & Sub-woofer from Epos AVS 5.1 system to match.
Initially wanted to get the AVS 5.1 but after hearing the demo, grab the ELS 303 and now safe more than RM1,000.

Who say KLIAV has no bargain???? There were two units of Pioneer VSX-918 (HDMI) going at RM999 only.

How about a brief review?
How big is your room and what center are you using now?
Is there an improvement over your previous set-up?

My AV/PC room is about 22 x 14 but half is used for my two PCs, facing the TV.
I was using Bose Acoustimass 2.1 previously matched with Pioneer VSX-933 AV receiver; with good vocal.
Overall, Bose vocal still excel but when come to Bluray concert / movie, the new setup is way ahead.
My Medexer PMP start to show some audio potential now and cables are almost game (except HDMI).
Still on Budget / Entry mode but start with a bang / value system with established brand and latest tech i.e. Onkyo 608.
