Thanks for the kind words. I lived in the UK for a really long time, hence the accent.

We cover all gaming platforms, consoles and handhelds, just happens that this week there was a lot of PS3 stuff. Next week, we'll be looking at some other games. Thanks for listening. smile.gif

We might have some Pokemon chat next week, depending on our guests. Personally I haven't been playing it, because I find it's the kind of game you can only play once every few iterations. Because it's basically the same game over and over again.

Still, I think the Pokewalker is cool.

It's true that Pokemon have the likely same storyline and game play all the time, but i can assure you that fans will still play the game again and again.

Looking forward to your next episode smile.gif

I like it how you get established people like Blake to be in your circle. Anyway my review.

I started on Episode 4 and worked my way back, you guys were concise well educated when it came to the topic and not afraid to speak your mind. Great show and like everyone else in this thread I would like to throw my hat in the ring if you ever need more nerds to talk about gaming.

I'm a fan of GFW and Legendary Thread podcasts on 1up last time.
Your podcast is nice. Great effort... smile.gif

A small annoyance: The Malaysian accent is fine but I spotted a few bad pronounciation and grammar errors so hopefully it can be reduced? smile.gif

Just done with Episode 5. Great discussion on games and all. Can't wait for your take on Video Games Live as I'll be attending it as well smile.gif.

I'm sorry but your friend Eddy or however I spell his name, sounds really annoying in the podcast.

He swallows his words and he kinda spoils everyone else's momentum with his meh comments...

PS: No offence, its still a good podcast but just wanna point this out as he's beginning to annoy me real bad rclxub.gif

Hi there. This is Blake, one of the dudes on the podcast. I would like to apologise for my retarded and annoying friend, Eddy. No doubt he can be quite gay sometimes, but do cut a bit of slack for him.

English is not exactly his first language so its actually quite a feat already for him to go on this podcast and talk about his passion - games. He is trying really hard to improve and we're constantly helping him - with a whip and taser in hand. smile.gif

Thank you for taking the time to listen to our podcast. More good things are sure to come.

Cheers!

But this podcast eddy was more acting like robot. But overall I listen all the podcast up till now and I really enjoy. Keep up the good work

Just to add on, the splinter cell realistic difficulty not much changes except that you take a few hit before you die. Like 3 hit then you will die.

Hehe... Eddy is likened to John C. Dvorak in TWIT (This Week In Tech). Some people think he's (John) is annoying, but indispensible. thumbup.gif

Anyway, great job guys. I haven't been listening to much of any local podcasts lately, last time was only Jeff Ooi's and that's pretty much of it. (Correct me if I'm wrong) Keep up the good work. We need more local content (even though there's not much of a good one in the mainstream media, but I have high hopes for the Internet media).

I have been following every single episodes and I listened to it in the LRT every week on the way to work. Sometimes people may think I am having mental, whenever I laughed to myself inside the train at parts where you guys gave hilarious comments. Good times. biggrin.gif

Yeah, I used to listen to the 1UP podcast a lot. Funnily enough, I didn't like Shane that much when I started listening to it, but by the time he left, I definitely missed his presence on the podcast.

Hi boys,

I was the person who said hello to Eddy and told Eddy I wanted to meet the rojak gang. Besides a listener of the show, I'm also a customer of Eddy's shop.

Thanks for mentioning me in the show although I was nameless, haha. Keep up the good work, cheers

Kombat-Kond3m

PS: Am still interested to join the show if the gang's a man short

Cool, a Malaysian video game podcast. Besides the nasally voices, it should still be interesting to have a local take on games.

Espgaluda II
This game could have been much better if they had auto-fire and let you guide your ship around with your finger, instead of using a traditional "analog stick" approach.

BTW, have you guys tried Shoot 1up on the XBLA?

Babylonian Twins
Very, very surprised no mention of Lost Vikings, or even Trine, especially when [insert name] was trying to visualise the game. /sad

Super Street Fighter IV
DLC adding new characters is a sure way to kill your online community. Unless the characters are already on the game disc and require a special download code to unlock, DLC characters will create an unbalance in the player base. In FPSes if you didn't have a DLC map, you could simply play on other maps; the same logic doesn't apply with fighting games because you simply cannot play with other players that have bought the DLC.

I also don't get why people are dissing Capcom for this release just because it's only one year from the last game. Arc System Works will be releasing a BlazBlue sequel in May/June, i.e. ONE YEAR from the console release of their last game! Is anybody throwing a fit about this?

PS: May have missed it, but did you give credit to the creators of your intro and intermission themes?

Errr, I think you're mixing up the game with something else? The game has autofire. If you use the advance controls, there is an on/off button for autofire. And there's no analog stick either. I've been playing this a lot, it's definitely one of the best iPhone games IMO.

Ahh, I haven't played either of those games, sorry. Would like to try Trine one day though.

In regards to floppy disk games: Atria ftw. What's that shop directly above Spectra called again? Used to go there for games up until the DVD era. Good times. Yes, in hindsight that was blatant piracy, but back then pirated games were much easier to find than originals. Sad.

Btw Eddy, what's wrong with Jinjang hah? Not good enough for you issit?

Team Fortress 2 not hardcore? Them fighting words, mate. XP

Gamer's Hideout did have some achievement reward system, at least for Guitar Hero, a couple years back. They gave out RM50 to the first person to get a Perfect score on every song in the hardest difficulty. And what's the stigma with mentioning their name?

ok ok, i apologise for all the hardcore TF2 fans out there. i'm sure they're just as hardcore as the halotards as well. tongue.gif

maybe i didnt articulate my argument well enough, but halo has a lot more rabid fanboys (like Eddy. lol) and the competitive scene is crazy with the likes of your MLG and what nots. Also, you've got fanbois that break down the game to its core, like hitpoints and shit. that's really hardcore stuff.

yeah GH did have that achievement reward system back then. disclosure: in case you didnt know, Eddy is from GH. he is of the 3 noobs that own GH. tongue.gif So, the whole conversation of not mentioning GH is really just a dig at Eddy and co. lol.

If I'm not mistaken, TF2 has lots of fanboys, but they're all PC gamers. Isn't it one of the biggest online shooters on the PC? Bloody Halotards...

This Espgaluda 2 autofire is an injoke thing I'm not getting, right?

They're PC gamers because Valve has neglected to update the console versions. The constant updates from Valve has changed the game so much from vanilla that it's barely the same game.

Just finished listening after waiting 1 hour for the 25MB file to download.

1) Alan Wake. X360 only. Sad face.

2) No mention about Little Big Planet 2. Sad face.

3) Games-to-movies: Tomb Raider? Both weren't great, but it's a great excuse to stare at Angelina Jolie for 90 minutes.

4) Prince of Persia: Who cares about Jake Gwyllenhal? It's all about Bond babe Gemma Arterton!

5) The reason you don't hear about Mac gamers is because not many companies make games for Macs. With Steam following the footsteps of Blizzard, we'll see more and more developers looking to the platform for more market reach. This is especially great since Steam has access to a great number of indie developers, like Runic Games (Torchlight).

Ooo.. Sam and Max? How come I miss that one?.. Anyways, It all went alright after I dwnload the program.. Due to certain commitment, I have to leave the Mac behind and shut it dwn... And.. My mac phail on me when try to power it up... I do not completely blame the program for it.. It may because of other stuff.. But the last thing I ever install in my mac before I take my leave is... Steam.. Ok, I'm sorry.. I do not intend to blame it that much... Its really a tempting program.. But it just dun work for me mac.. Maybe..I shall try it some time later..

Well,.. The thing is it just couldn't boot up and reach to my desktop.. So, I try to boot it using the installation disk in hope of keeping the old files..But, things dun work out.. A clean installation save the day.. But, unfortunately.. Because I off the time machine function just some time ago.. Certain files are gone.. forever... sad.gif

Yeah this happened to me this morning. No need to clean install, just CMD + ALT + Power button to force restart. The Steam client is still buggy, and I would advise fully quitting the app before setting your Mac to sleep.

Hm, listening to Eddy's breathing for an hour is... strangely annoying.

Considering OJ is a fan of sport games (or at least one type of sport game), I'm surprised there was no mention of EA's Online Pass.

Also, here's an in-depth explanation of 3D movie technology.

We'll chat about it next week. It's quite a disturbing trend, especially THQ's online code disaster with UFC 2010.

We try to cover as much as we can each week, but it's inevitable we'll miss some stories. After all, we all have day jobs as well!

I can't remember if you guys brought it up last week, but Half Life 2 has made the jump to Mac since last Wednesday. They're still 30% off, but Mac/PC gamers who haven't got them can buy the Orange Box digital bundle from Steam.

Btw, if any of you are fans of bullet-hell shooters, Soldner-X2 is out on the PSN. While it brings nothing new to the genre, its graphics are phenomenal for a PSN title. Check it out.

----
World Cup
You guys' World Cup challenge sounds alot like that MLB 2010 story several weeks back. Y'know, the one where they promised $1mil to the first person to film themselves pitching a perfect game? If anything, it sounds like a cool idea for another GH gathering.

Also, after all those Maxis ads, I wonder Malaysia would have a better chance if EA went and included the old (OLD) Malaysian team (DLC?). XP

Second-hand games
Considering the success of Gamestop in the US, I have always wondered why there hasn't been a Malaysian company that buys and resells second-hand games, especially since the current gen consoles. Even if one could pirate games on the Xbox 360 and Wii, the PS3 has still remained clear - even if a handful of people have cracked it. To my experience, the only means of selling off used games is through these forums. The greatest hurdle, I would think, would be creating an updatable database of games and their relative prices in respect to time. Am I missing something here?

Heavy Rain
And I'm very curious as to what difficulty Eddy is playing Heavy Rain in. On "I'm a gamer" setting, you'd have to be pretty alert and have pretty decent reflexes just to stay alive. So to say that one could waggle the controller and press a button or two here and there has me rather skeptical...

iPhone games
Robot Unicorn Attack. Go. Go play it. NOW!!!!

Why not talk about the Licensing problem affecting sellers of original games? Someone must have tatter taled the government about this.

I still don't quite get that story or its significance. As far as I've read that thread (which is page 1), it affects the display of game trailers only, right?

It affects the selling of original games that does not have the Tulen stickers as assigned by the government. In other words, if by any chance you are an importer of original games from overseas and you buy in bulk, you do not have any possible chance to sell to the public unless you apply for that sticker.

But I thought, after some time well, 2 months or more maybe a year... some second hand games can go as low as 5 pound, No? Well, that deal is so worth every penny.. Of course scratches and stuff have to depends on your luck though..

It really depends on the title and genre. Sports games that are 6 months to a year old have very little resale value because of the yearly iterations. Games that maintain their popularity throughout a long period of time, like Modern Warfare 2 can still garner a respectable price at the trade-in. Shovelware, of course can go as low as 5 - 10 pounds when you try to sell to the shop.

If all three of you had perfect English then you can't call this the RojakGamer Podcast anymore. XP
Seriously, though, I think it'll help the show more if the level of discussion was improved upon, instead of just language mastery. A lot of topics you bring up have very little research done between the hosts, thus causing most of them to be thrown away when much more could be said about the matter. Yes, I admit you won't get the level of insight as Daniel Kayser (Gametrailers, EpicBattleCry) or Garnett Lee (Shacknews, Weekend Confirmed), but I think you'll distinguish yourselves by bringing the focus to the local gaming scene, whatever that is.

Btw, Fifa 2010 is on the iPhone, if OJ is interested.

well said, and point taken. we do try to do our homework beforehand but sometimes its just not possible on a busy work week. maybe it's time we look for sponsors so that we can quit our day jobs. lol.

our focus is definitely on the local gaming scene (and like you said, whatever that is. lol) and from a malaysian gamer POV. we'll never 'measure up' to the pros so to speak, but that's not our objective anyway. our big picture goal is to at least be relevant to the rojak-eating gamers out there. biggrin.gif

maybe because games, like movie and music, is a controlled items?
is it just pay for the sticker or also included sales tax? does it undergo censorship?

Honestly, time is the big issue here. Doing a podcast is a hell of a lot of work (for me in particular, with the editing/producing/uploading, it's not something that happens by magic). Like Blake mentioned, we all have day jobs to attend to as well. I've barely been able to touch my consoles over the past couple of weeks because I've been slogging away until late hours at work. Also, I try to keep the podcasts brief, because I find all those 2 hour podcasts overwhelmingly long. All my favourite podcasts are around 45minutes long, hence the length of ours. We're doing the best we can with the time we have. smile.gif

The podcast, in its current form, is a place for a bunch of like-minded gaming friends to come together and chat about games. There's no point in us trying to be like Garnett Lee's podcast, because, 1) it already exists and 2) it's his job! The day I get to sit around and play and review games for a living is the day that my research becomes impeccable! tongue.gif For now, let's just enjoy the ride! smile.gif

Thanks for the tip about FIFA 10 iPhone. It's total trash compared to X2 Football though. Will have words about it on the pod this week!

The real process to go through to the end point of selling (in my observation):

1. Import games.
2. Let customs check.
3. Customs send to Censorship department (Not necessary though)
4. Customs releases, but tells you to go register Goverment for Tulen sticker.
5. After paying customs the tax, pay government a little more tax and for Tulen sticker.
6. Final release back to the importer. Start selling.

Such a process may take up from 4 days to 1 month. If you certain titles coming late to the market (my Wii games are an example), you know who to point fingers.

And to the Rojakgamer guys, E3's a coming. Gonna be a busy week eh? tongue.gif

Best episode yet. Not only did it download in less than 4 hours, there was also a fair amount of funny stuff throughout.

Cost to get into 3D gaming (all prices in USD and found via Amazon.com):
QUOTE
PlayStation3 Slim 120GB - US$300
Samsung UN55C7000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV (Black) - US$2500 (new & used)
Samsung 3D Starter Kit SSG-P2100T (2 pairs of 3D glasses + Monster vs Aliens Blu-ray) - US$330
3D enabled PS3 game - US$60
---
Total = US$3190
This is assuming you don't change TVs as there is no industry standard for the 3D technology at the moment. This means 3D glasses made by Samsung won't sync with Sony TVs, etc. Prices also do not include Sony's Move.

Speaking of which, with the only 3D-capable console being the Playstation 3, Microsoft could seriously make a very big impact on the show floor by releasing a Blu-ray-capable Xbox 360 and make Blu-rays the new format for newer games.

Finally, I'd like to add that Team Fortress 2 is out on the Mac. If you haven't already, go buy the Orange Box on Steam.

We also chatted a bit about Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Child of Eden, and the hilarious Konami Conference and a few other things that slipped my mind. We'll have a quick recap about Sony next week.

Nothing from The Last Guardian and Arkham Asylum 2 makes me a sad puppy. =(

Oh yeah, I don't think you mentioned anything about Rock Band 3's new Pro guitar. Brian Lahey from Shacknews also mentioned something about a full-sized Fender guitar that could be played as a real guitar as well as the game's controller. (Expensive) badassery.

Little Big Planet
Wow... couldn't disagree more with your take on Little Big Planet 1 and 2. First and foremost, there are over 1 million user-created maps available. So even if you consider only 1% to be anything worth playing, that's still 10 000 playable maps! Furthermore, with LBP 2 users can create linked levels, which can let them create an entire full-fledged start-to-finish game with or without multiple genres.

Speaking of which, LBP appeals to people not just because the user can create levels. Even if you weren't good at map creation, you could still enjoy a vast library of games without needing to pay anything extra! Yes, there will be lots of poorly conceived maps or link levels, but that's nothing different from full-sized US$60 games in the market.

PSN+
You forgot to mention the free PSN game Sony promises to give you every month. And you forgot that all these free stuff will be accessible so long as you maintain the PSN+ subscription. In other words, the moment you stop paying, all the free games, movies, Qore subscription goes poof!

OnLive
Somewhat similar to PSN+. The EULA for OnLive states that OnLive has the right to delete games from their library at any given time after 3 years from the game's release date without needing to refund you - and yes, besides the OnLive subscription, you still have to buy games. Furthermore, should you not renew your OnLive subscription for more than 12 months, they are allowed to delete your entire library of games without needing to refund.

Take this into consideration when you think about your discussion about ownership. With a physical copy of the game, you literally own the game unless something bad happens to it physically, e.g. scratched, stolen, eaten, etc. When you let your game be hosted by some cloud service, how can you be certain your US$60 actually gives you ownership of the game? Let's take Steam as an example. By purchasing a game via the Steam Store and without buying the game DVD, you're still able to download the full game from Steam's servers so long as you install the Steam client. Now imagine what would happen if Steam suddenly got a change of heart and randomly decides you're pirating their games. They'll flip a switch and poof!, you no longer can download, install or play the game you paid money for, regardless of the validity of their accusations.

Good point. 4-player campaign maybe?

Having said that, I think completing campaign missions only save for the host (which is really stupid) so it's a bit of letdown in that regard.

You lot sure don't play enough JRPGs... As far back as the first Final Fantasy you can create your own parties, even including class changing after a certain level. That's not to even bring up Western RPGs, from the good-ol' developers such as SSL and Origin Systems, who made the veritable classics like Eye of the Beholder and the Ultima series.

Oh, and for those who missed the EXTREME references, check out this EXTREME press conference at this year's E3.

I swear, this beats Giant Crabs and Massive Damage.

Last but not least, you lot really need to check out DeathSpank. It's out on XBLA and PSN for RM58. No reason to miss rare, wholesome, spanking goodness. Best of all, it's not mindless button mashing: Apocalyptic difficulty actually requires some skill!

I'm well aware that you can create your own characters in other RPGs. If you listen to the discussion, you will notice I'm comparing DQIX to DQVIII, which I think is a fair comparison? If I mentioned that they removed random battles for the first time in the series (which I meant to, but forgot) it wouldn't matter that plenty of RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Grandia, Mother, etc) also let you see the enemies on the world map, right?

Anyway, you're right, I don't play as many RPGs as other genres. That I'm enjoying the game a lot (multiplayer is a blast btw) should give you an idea of it's quality. It's probably the second best game I've played this year (behind Red Dead Redemption).

Quite interested in Deathspank, but Summer Of Arcade is around the corner and I'm saving my points for Limbo!

If I mentioned that they removed random battles for the first time in the series (which I meant to, but forgot) it wouldn't matter that plenty of RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Grandia, Mother, etc) also let you see the enemies on the world map, right?

9:30 [Jason]: It does feel like it. Let's take for example Final Fantasy has all fixed characters.

QUOTE(coriandery @ Jul 19 2010, 03:40 PM)
Anyway, you're right, I don't play as many RPGs as other genres. That I'm enjoying the game a lot (multiplayer is a blast btw) should give you an idea of it's quality. It's probably the second best game I've played this year (behind Red Dead Redemption).

Quite interested in Deathspank, but Summer Of Arcade is around the corner and I'm saving my points for Limbo!

Bah, so envious. Such a damn shame that PSN has nowhere near the number of good XBLA titles.

Like I mentioned on last week's pod, we're doing the pod this weekend (Sunday) so we can have some opinions on GOTY. So expect the pod out on Monday. Cheers.

How does Star Craft 2: Wings of Liberty abbreviate into GOTY? ;p

And grats on being able to drag somebody away from the game long enough to review it.

Finally caught up with the last two episodes.
Starcraft 2
I found it weird that John kept talking about Starcraft 2's single player campaign features, e.g. key characters, in-game cutscenes, as if Warcraft 3 never existed. While I'm sure Starcraft 2 has took the concept to a new level, it's not really that new to the RTS world, although admittedly rare.

Another thing that was was missed was the Challenges mode. Similar to Super Street Fighter 4's Challenge Mode, this set of Single Player challenges are meant to train newbie players on multiplayer tactics, something the Single Player campaign doesn't do.

Monkey Island 2
Eddy, you should really check out Secret of Monkey Island 2 (SE), considering how much you liked the humour of DeathSpank. Why? Because the creator/writer of DeathSpank is the same as Monkey Island 2, i.e. Ron Gilbert.

The Rules of Attraction
Blake kept giving the reason why Eddy liked Halo was because it was "hardcore". But I think you missed the bigger question: What is hardcore? Why is Halo 3 considered more hardcore than CoD Modern Warfare 2? There was mention of the instant gratification of shooters, where a good shot leads to a quick, immediate and satisfyingly messy kill. Yet Modern Warfare 2 kills come more quickly than Halo, due to the existence of rechargeable shields in the latter.

And through all that, I'm proud of the lot of you for not bringing up Counter Strike as a personal example. /thumbsup

PS: Grats on first (?) episode with title. ;p

I could have elaborated why Halo 3 is more 'hardcore' that most shooters out there, Modern Warfare 2 included, if Eddy only stop interuppting me! lol.

Seriously, it would take an entire podcast to explain why Halo 3 is THE premier shooter on any console (or dare i say platform? tongue.gif) today. For one, Halo 3 is not easy to pick up and master unlike most shooters out there. I must say that the learning curve is rather steep and the game and community can be quite unforgiving to noobs or even the average player.

Why Halo 3 is the most ‘hardcore’ is a combination of various factors. Among them:

1. Jumping - that one simple feature alone literally adds another dimension to the game. Not only you gotta look/move/shoot left, right and back, you gotta look/move/shoot up and down as well.

2. Extremely balanced weapons and armor system – The holy trinity of Halo: guns, grenades and melee. A player needs to know how to use all 3 in combat to be good in the game. You can’t just spam either one to get quick, cheap kills. The shield of the player plays a big part of the game. You gotta take down the shield before chipping away the life total. One-shot kills are only reserved for headshots with the sniper or with the plasma/spike (sticky) grenades and they take skill (or a lot of luck) to pull off consistently.

3. Physics system - the physics engine of Halo is just plain crazy. Everything in the game abides the in-game laws of physics. Everything. Grenades have a set trajectory but they can be affected by 'air-lifts' and gravity. Bullets can ricochet or be banked off walls (correctly) to kill. Understanding how your player moves around the map is a also key to survival.

4. Multiplayer experience - bar none, it is the best system for multiplayer today. 2v2, 5v5, lone wolf, casual, ranked - it has it all and the matchmaking system is almost perfect. Tell me which matchmaking system will ask you if you prefer to play with chatty or quiet players, serious or casual players?

Ok. There’s more but I’ll stop here before I turn this to an essay. I’m not the biggest Halo fan around but I can see through the ‘rabid fanboiness’ often associated with Halo. It is that good of a shooter if you’re the kind that take your shooters seriously. I can say that it rewards players with skills properly and punishes those without, appropriately.

Hi Ojimaru...thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. At least it shows that Rojakgamer podcast do have some knowledgeable PC gamer's audience. (also thanks for not fast forwarding the portion when John is talking. laugh.gif )

The key highlight I am trying to point out in the podcast is Storytelling in RTS genre. Starcraft 1, Warcraft 3 or any other RTS in general only present the story in the form of CG cutscene or gameplay cutscene using in-game assets which is pretty lackluster...in my opinion. Here is one good example from SC2.

What Blizzard manage to introduce in Starcraft 2 is the ability to interact with various in-game objects, character in a different way. Personally I have not seen any other RTS which offer the same approach as Blizzard by incorporating the point & click adventure/RPG'ish element into RTS. However please do correct me if I am wrong.

I got to admit, I have only crawl back into PC RTS up until recently. So my insight on the RTS genre may seems rather ancient but I do keep up with the news from time to time. tongue.gif So feel free to share your bit & pieces or recommend me some RTS game which you think may be a good contender to SC2. The last RTS I played before SC2 are Halo Wars, Civilization Revolution, Dawn of War 1 & Company of Heroes.

Yes indeed I have missed out the Challenges mode, revamp BNET interface & custom game filter etc. I blame it on my sleep deprivation. tongue.gif

That's some pretty good analysis of Halo 3; bravo.

I think points 1,2 and 3 sum up to the unbridled display of skill required to be good at the game. Without the aid of headshots or obvious exploits/cheap shots (e.g. Gears of War 2's rolling shotgun), the rock-paper-scissors of gun, melee and grenade really set the newbs and pros apart. I'm reminded by a comment from Brian Lahey of Shacknews when he was summing up why Starcraft managed to still hold such high esteem even after 12 years. There's no doubt a game is hardcore when a skill of a player could be gauged just by how he/she assigned workers in the opening seconds of a game.

Um, you could achieve most of the above example in the original Starcraft, even with the Map Editor. Those were merely events occurring in pre-defined areas that caused floating heads to appear. A prime example in Warcraft 3 is the Culling of Stratholme scenario, where you play the role of human Arthas as he led a regiment through the infected city of Stratholme, a scene so dramatic that Blizzard re-enacted it in World of Warcraft.

Having said that... both games are from the same masterminds. /shrug

On an unrelated note: don't forget that Castlevania: Harmony of Despair (XBLA) is out and Scott Pilgrim vs the World (XBLA, PSN) comes out sometime this week. Both have co-op and probably less crazy than Earth Defence Forces. ;p

Yup...exactly my point. First screenshot shows the old-school RTS story telling method which Blizzard manage to keep while bringing something new to the table (in RTS genre) - interactive interludes between mission as shown in second screenshot. I have not play WoW btw....to hell with MMO! tongue.gif

PSPhone
I highly doubt Sony will go back to the UMD. The PSPGo already does digital downloads via the PlayStation Store, so there wouldn't really be a need to create another niche for the phone. Then again, this is Sony we're talking about... /sigh

Valve's DotA
I'm very skeptical about this. Right now there's already two surviving spinoffs of DotA: Heroes of Newearth and League of Legends. Each already has their own rabid fanboys, which makes me doubt too many will go over to another similar game, regardless of its pedigree. Icefrog and his team will really need to go the extra mile to stand apart from the rest if they want to succeed.

I think the coolest thing out of Gamescom 10 would have to be Double Fine's Costume Quest. The brainchild of Tim Shafer's (Secret of Monkey Island, Psyhconauts, Brutal Legend) studio, Costume Quest is an RPG based around Halloween. You navigate around the game world as costumed kids, but when battle comes, the kids morph into a "real" version of their costumes!

Since you've mentioned it, I'm very curious about your audio recording setup for the podcast. I'm guessing XBLive headsets are involved, but what about recording, mixing, etc?

As for the podcast, a damn shame for the lost. What were the topics this week?

Wait a minute... John's actually playing something other than StarCraft 2? o_O Stil waiting for Scott Pilgrim to be released on PSN MY. While that, there's Shank and Puzzle Quest 2. smile.gif Nice few months of great indie games this has been.

One thing I'm sure will be on top of people's radar this week will be XBLive Gold subscription fee increase, contrasted no less by Nintedo DSi price drop. Metroid Other M came out last week, too, although I'm not sure OJ has been able to pull himself away from Dragon Quest to spare that a glance.

Oh, one more thing. I urge you to check out Beat Hazard on Steam. It's a shoot-em-up that generates levels, enemies, bosses and power ups based on the music you're playing. If anything, it's a great way to find out if you suffer from epileptic seizures that are triggered by a certain pattern of flashing lights. whistling.gif Makes me very curious what kind of level it'd be like with OJ's tunes playing...

I'll reupload the file. I've been having problems with the hosting server, in that it takes an extraordinary amount of time to upload the mp3. Obviously something didn't work along the way. Thanks for letting me know.

Added on September 5, 2010, 2:41 pmOk, I reuploaded the file and checked it, it should be working now.

Thanks everyone for putting up with our crappy webhost, I can't wait for the subscription to expire so we can move to somewhere faster and more reliable.

Welcome back.

I have to completely disagree with your take on the GameCenter achievement system. If Microsoft and Sony regulate the value of achievements in a game, what makes you think Apple - who has already rejected thousands of app applications - won't regulate their own achievement system?

On the other hand, I'm now actually more interested in Vanquish. I'll go check out some gameplay vids and maybe even pre-order. Goodness knows I'm burnt out from over 180 hours of Puzzle Quest 2.

Finally got it.

First off, I know you made the comment in passing, but seriously, NO to buttons on an iOS game machine. One of the main reasons iOS games are so successful is because they don't rely on controls. Have you tried Flight Control on the PS3 and Dualshock 3? Would you say it's anywhere close to playing the same game on a multi-touch screen? Buttons are great, but they don't make games games.

On a different note, here's an ad for Modern Warfare 2 that didn't get past censorship:

And of course, who could forget the Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2's viral ads...

Flight Control yes, but you'd have to say no to plenty of other games: FPSes, platform games, old ports... if they're good, it's usually in spite of the controls.

Of course, the solution is to stop making these kind of games, but as long as developers continue to do so, it's still a valid complaint.

FPSes I can live without while I'm out at about (i.e. whenever I play iOS games).

Platform games? Doesn't this genre include stuff like Doodle Jump, Canabalt, Robot Unicorn Attack and Mirror's Edge?

Fact is, the lack of buttons on the iPhone (and Kinect) is a great chance for developers to move games back to an age where you didn't need to memorise 20+ button combinations; ignoring the maturity of the content, which do you think would be easier to pick up and play: Mario (6 buttons, including directions) or God of War 3 (38 buttons and combinations, excluding 2 analog sticks, combo attacks and QTEs)? Now compare those with Fruit Ninja.

Not all games work on all platforms - RTSes have proven that over and over - some games need only slight tweaking to their UI. The rest is only limited by the developers' imagination.

It's a real shame most of you lot don't play PC games because I'm sure you'd also like Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale over at Steam. Instead of a game development company, your character owns and runs an item shop in a typical JRPG town. You can choose to sell consumable items, armour and/or weapons, all which can be bought from local suppliers. Additionally, you can sponsor adventurers for their dungeon crawling, which can net you rare items and such.

To answer Eddy's question, DOTA II will be using the Source engine. There's a chance that it will look like Monday Night Combat, although I'm pretty sure it'll be in a similar vein as Valve's on Alien Swarm game. Come to think of it, if IceFrogz and Valve really want to set themselves apart from League of Legend and Heroes of Newearth, they could probably integrate the mechanics used in Alien Swarm, e.g. welding doors shut, setting traps, etc. and introducing more environmental elements that will factor into each team's strategy.

One thing to remember when putting your better half on hold: don't forget about that viral video of the chick gone spare, regardless of its authenticity. XD

As for the Playstation Phone, I'm curious why they went back to the PSPGo's design and not take a page out of the NDS' playbook. If they replaced the bottom half with a touchscreen, things would have been much more interesting.

Welcome back.

I'm surprised you guys didn't have much love for Mass Effect 2, to the point of making inane comments like "It's for Sci-fi fans" (Yes, and Halo is a Lovecraftian Romantic Horror and Starcraft is a Tim Burtonesque Comedic Action Documentary). Different strokes, different folks, I guess.

Speaking of which, maybe make next episode the "Favourite Game of 2010" episode.

Bootcamp into Windows 7. XD I haven't tried it virtualised, but I doubt it uses more resources than the Steam client.
(And strangely, the Jap voiceovers pronounced the main character's name as "re-set-to". Localisation-ho!)

One random thought popped up during the discussion of Football Manager 2011:
Would it be to the game's benefit to not include real world teams and players? Say the game randomly generates player names and stats, just as detailed as the current game, do you think people would take to it? I know the game plays into fans' wet dreams of being the manager of all the top names in the league, but how much difference does it make to the player, really?

That option actually already exists in the game. smile.gif I have no desire to use that mode, although I'm sure there's a small niche of players who do. It's nice that they include the option though.

Y'know, I was wondering how many times were you guys thinking of saying "Infinity Ward" instead of "Infinity Blade"? XD The game is simplistic and repetitive, no doubt, even if the enemies' attacks get more and more elaborate as you progress. However, if you're looking for a game that fully demonstrates the power of the iPhone 4, there is none better at the moment.

Oh yeah, best pro-tip for playing Donkey Kong Country Returns that I've heard so far: Never play the game in bed when your partner's asleep.

I think about the game's lifespan, I personally think that its more like since the time taken to make a game is long... the other thing they can do is by releasing allot of DLC to get the players busy... it earns them more revenue too...

Very informative podcast btw... rclxms.gif

Indie games can't compete? Rovio's Angry Birds has over 30 mil install base across iOS and Android! Minecraft is grossing $250,000 a day. And it's not even in BETA! Best of all, Beta is going to be more expensive!

Honourable mention: Kirby's Epic Yarn

And a particular Youtube video suggests that Dance Central should be included in your lists as well. *nod*

Anyway, happy new year to you lot. Here's hoping for less/no more "lost tapes", lest they return during All Hallow's Eve to haunt OJ.

lol.. i was actually wondering why aren't there any podcast last week.. but i worry it's annoying if i mention it... XD

psp these days are mostly for JRPGs... minis and casual games doesn't work for psp so sony just stop advertising it cuz not many pay attention to it..

i'd been wanting to try 999... it has great review but getting a ds for it is just abit... hmm...

i think 3ds make quite a huge difference.. graphic wise.. but it still has polygons and after some time i do not think people will really realise that its actually 3D... since the whole 3D thing is bout optical illusions and you might not be able to enjoy it if you are too busy...

bout, kinect avatar... maybe you guys can have it... it grab longer span of attention by having audience watching animated avatar perhaps...? biggrin.gif

Love you guy's podcast btw.. Give me something to look forward to on the week end.. Keep it up! rclxms.gif

Oh ya~! Although I do not have a DS and probably is a tad bit wrong to ask for this... But, there is one game call ghost trick: the phantom detective... I wonder whether its a good game or not.. maybe you guys can try it if you want..?

well, maybe we should just wait for the second generation? I am sure Nintendo will come up with a longer battery life by then... but the region lock thing is really something that i do not understand coming from nintendo..

The cross platform idea... i think is the first move from sony to counter piracy perhaps.. And if portal is a success I can see where its going.. Sony probably will try to do it for other games like COD.. But, using a mouse for shooting is way better than gamepad unless they use a move control.. hmm... lets see how things get..

Great podcast.. rclxms.gif

Sony is too hardcore to be casual.. Lol.. It has been their tradition for a decade.. and being casual like PSPGo doesn't seems to work..

I agree though.. When parent walk into the store.. 3D is going to win.. Even the DS design looks more friendly to their children.. PSP2 is too clunky and big... It can even kill people if you hit people hard on the head with it.. But, it wins most of the hardcore's heart... Fingers crossed for Sony.

I personally do not think any horror game can be as scary as silent hill... Because you have so less power and all you can do is run for your life over and over again.. Its crazy...

Wow... After Hearing the DS game recommendation, I think i might get one soon.. Thanks for the review.. XD

And a very funny podcast indeed... Enjoyed it very much! rclxms.gif

TO be honest, both PSP2 and 3DS does not excite me for now. The games that are launch for 3DS does not warrant for a launch day buy. And you know nintendo will release a new 3DS seconds after the original 3DS is launched tongue.gif

weyh, still not up in itunes your podcast? I subscribing you guys, but no downloads yet? Any plans on doing Video podcast for once ala destructoid. Or you guys are too ugly to be on tv tongue.gif

Ghost Trick is from the same guys who brought us Phoenix Wright. So I'm not surprised if the story telling is top notch. What made me love this game more is the fact that its another innovative way of playing. People can have a demo online now. Its at the Ghost Trick thread in the Nintendo Subforum.

lol... I agree with Eddy here.. nobility is a word to cover up their big fat ego by distributing the codes and thus declare how good they are in jail breaking.. They shud just give it to their peers who can fully innovate the possibilities of jail breaking.. But not to the whole world..

Huge power comes with huge responsibility...

Thats is why total Freedom should only be given to those who are ethical but not those who do not have much morality code in them.. The inability of the "nobel" jail breaker to see this means that they have to take the responsibility up themselves..

And this thing now, Its like selling a knife to a person you know is a killer.. So the jail breaker is guilty of charge that will come up later in court.. I am sure they will try to open up a new bill later..

Microsoft on the other hand wins Sony because of the Xbox live.. Only gold subscriber can get the goodies.. And most of the games offer by Xbox are MMO or have one unlike Sony's where there are quite a number of single player games...

Anyway, good podcast... biggrin.gif

Me rage on snide remarks about Sony.. Lol.. tongue.gif

About the graphics... Thing is, with those promised high end visual, I am sure the whole budget for the development team will be raked up incredulously high... That is part of the reason why the graphic stays as it is now.. Well, I also happen to have read an article about graphics somewhere where there were developers who hope that gamers will not focus too much on the graphics so they can use the budget and experiment something new.. so, i am not really into the whole graphic mumbo jumbo..

And, Ipad could never replace any consoles.. They never would want to be anyway(makes them look cheap, apple have a huge ego ).. Moreover, rivaling with those developed consoles in the market is really going to drain the company's resources and its pointless to do that when they can milk more money from consumers by developing new hardware.. Take a look at iPad.. Besides, their rapid hardware turn over rate will render the previous gadget completely obsolete especially in gaming.. some feature in the new game will not be able to be supported by the old one.. still, there are loads of casual gamers out there and its a refreshing play for hardcore too.. so they still win somehow...

Btw, easy games can be quite addictive at times... It is science though if you ask me.. The content taps into a natural pattern that exist in all human beings.. We love to stare at something that moves even though its the same thing.. Like watching fire and never get bored of it.. However, it is really bad news to all hardcore indeed..

Some nice insights. I imagine all the console developers (or at least the finance departments) are dreading any the next generation of consoles. Can you imagine how much more games are going to cost to develop when they all have Crysis 2 (PC) graphics?

You're totally right about easy games. I was just watching people run around for ten minutes in Hot Springs Story last night.

Definitely, I think many developers are afraid of that.. Unless the next gen consoles development kit can go easy on them graphic wise, else I think only a few gaming developers can see the day of light.. Or that the next gen will flop completely...

Oh and nice podcast... Some part are very funny... Really like the crew very much... And OJ, you have very good skills in promoting a game.. haha... Hot Springs Story sounds interesting after listening to your review.. lolx.. laugh.gif

i think no one has that much money to burn away... The only way middle class games can save themselves is to lower down their retail cost in the first place or like blake said... Make an indie game instead or alongside their major game until there are less stream of triple A games being published in that particular year.. I am sure some people will get tired of FPS after some time.. So.. there are still a chance when there is lesser competition I suppose..

And 0.99 dollars downloads by millions of people in USA alone is allot of money and there are people from all over the world who are buying it as well.. So yea.. You get pretty rich with just one app.. If people happens to like it..

And I was thinking of getting Beyond good and Evil since I saw their well, cool sequel "trailer"... But, I have a second thought now.. Will see how it goes for the sequel before buying the first game..

And the Killzone accessories for PS Move is a good way to train soldiers, very hardcore fans that has a thing for shooting or those paranoid enough to think that the skill might come in handy one day.. lol...

Great podcast by the way.. Always like the way you guys discuss bout games..

Well, the PSP remake and HD-fied version might not be a happy news to old gamers.. But I think for those younger ones, or new comer it might be a good news and not to mention the hard cores too who happens to want to play it on their PS3... So well, it can make new income for old games and people who happens to only able to own new gen consoles can enjoy it as well.. So, I think its a good idea though..

I thought transfarring has the possibility of cloud save for the Vita? But of course you need another disc of sort for it... Oh, and the PSV has the function of playing with the PS3 online.. I thought it was a great idea... But I forget what game they showed it on stage... Which also means there might be a possibility that any games that support the PSV can be on the go! Even if you are outstation you can still enjoy playing games online..with your PS3 friends!

Beside, for Vita I was really amazed with their OLED screen... No reflection from excessive lighting and I can imagine its a great gaming device under the sun... It still looks crystal clear... Too bad there are no Sony fanboys in the pod group.. lol..

And, well, actually Nintendo's Wii-U was quite interesting... Some of the concept is new... It kinda takes time to heat up.. Great family console as always.. Just, the not being able to support more than one console for the Wii-U like you guys said is abit of a let down..

Btw, No one mention about Tin Tin the game?? At all? Lol.. I mean that cartoon is classic! XD. Also What about Elder scrolls skyrim? No one into RPGs? But, am glad Dark souls was mentioned though.. Lastly I guess FFXIII-2 is out of question not going to be discussed by you guys.. Lol.. I on the other hand was anticipating for it...

As for the Mr..Caffein from Ubisoft.. Lol.. People are actually quite irritated by him especially the "du ru ru du ru ru" part.. And, speaking of which.. This year Kevin Butler wasn't on stage at all...

And please stop the end of the world thing... Its really annoying even as a joke or whatever... Thanks!!

Anyway, great podcast... I loled about the apple having the best conference... laugh.gif

Well, I agree with the physical plastic theory especially in games... It satisfying being able to hold it and admire the boxes.....

My Xbox is going to be collecting dust soon once I finished all the games.. Moving to the more region friendly Sony who loves my money and isn't racist at all...

Anyway, anyone trying Solatorobo: Red The Hunter...?
