Finally caught up with the last two episodes.
Starcraft 2
I found it weird that John kept talking about Starcraft 2's single player campaign features, e.g. key characters, in-game cutscenes, as if Warcraft 3 never existed. While I'm sure Starcraft 2 has took the concept to a new level, it's not really that new to the RTS world, although admittedly rare.

Another thing that was was missed was the Challenges mode. Similar to Super Street Fighter 4's Challenge Mode, this set of Single Player challenges are meant to train newbie players on multiplayer tactics, something the Single Player campaign doesn't do.

Hi Ojimaru...thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. At least it shows that Rojakgamer podcast do have some knowledgeable PC gamer's audience. (also thanks for not fast forwarding the portion when John is talking. laugh.gif )

The key highlight I am trying to point out in the podcast is Storytelling in RTS genre. Starcraft 1, Warcraft 3 or any other RTS in general only present the story in the form of CG cutscene or gameplay cutscene using in-game assets which is pretty lackluster...in my opinion. Here is one good example from SC2.

What Blizzard manage to introduce in Starcraft 2 is the ability to interact with various in-game objects, character in a different way. Personally I have not seen any other RTS which offer the same approach as Blizzard by incorporating the point & click adventure/RPG'ish element into RTS. However please do correct me if I am wrong.

I got to admit, I have only crawl back into PC RTS up until recently. So my insight on the RTS genre may seems rather ancient but I do keep up with the news from time to time. tongue.gif So feel free to share your bit & pieces or recommend me some RTS game which you think may be a good contender to SC2. The last RTS I played before SC2 are Halo Wars, Civilization Revolution, Dawn of War 1 & Company of Heroes.

Yes indeed I have missed out the Challenges mode, revamp BNET interface & custom game filter etc. I blame it on my sleep deprivation. tongue.gif

That's some pretty good analysis of Halo 3; bravo.

I think points 1,2 and 3 sum up to the unbridled display of skill required to be good at the game. Without the aid of headshots or obvious exploits/cheap shots (e.g. Gears of War 2's rolling shotgun), the rock-paper-scissors of gun, melee and grenade really set the newbs and pros apart.  I'm reminded by a comment from Brian Lahey of Shacknews when he was summing up why Starcraft managed to still hold such high esteem even after 12 years. There's no doubt a game is hardcore when a skill of a player could be gauged just by how he/she assigned workers in the opening seconds of a game.
Um, you could achieve most of the above example in the original Starcraft, even with the Map Editor. Those were merely events occurring in pre-defined areas that caused floating heads to appear. A prime example in Warcraft 3 is the Culling of Stratholme scenario, where you play the role of human Arthas as he led a regiment through the infected city of Stratholme, a scene so dramatic that Blizzard re-enacted it in World of Warcraft.

Having said that... both games are from the same masterminds. /shrug

On an unrelated note: don't forget that Castlevania: Harmony of Despair (XBLA) is out and Scott Pilgrim vs the World (XBLA, PSN) comes out sometime this week. Both have co-op and probably less crazy than Earth Defence Forces. ;p

Yup...exactly my point. First screenshot shows the old-school RTS story telling method which Blizzard manage to keep while bringing something new to the table (in RTS genre) - interactive interludes between mission as shown in second screenshot. I have not play WoW btw....to hell with MMO! tongue.gif
