Using a 4GB Class 2 Sandisk that came with my camera and recently bought another 4GB Class 4 Sandisk for RM49. So far I see no difference when taking pictures at all.
I bought my 16GB Kingston Class 4 SDHC for RM 120. I quite like it, not that bad for the price.
As for card reader, I highly recommend Apacer AM400, just RM 25 and all your work will be done swiftly! Got this recommendation from those people in Canon thread.
I asked my friend to buy it in LYP last week and he managed to get one for myself and he later bought for himself too from Cycom.
Heard no more stock, not sure if it will be restocked. Most of the shops are selling at RM 40 and above.
So far I heard Viewnet, Cycom and Sri Computer from LYP have that. You may hunt for it!
No regret for such little amount money spent, because the results are awesome!
If you bought a nice DSLR camera and need high speed shooting spending a few hundred more for faster/burst shooting speeds makes sense. If you have a compact of transfer speeds are not an issue then a cheaper memory card will suffice.
If you bought a nice DSLR camera and need high speed shooting spending a few hundred more for faster/burst shooting speeds makes sense. If you have a compact of transfer speeds are not an issue then a cheaper memory card will suffice.
The different classes should make a difference, as each class denotes a guaranteed minimum transfer speed. Class 10 should allow you to transfer at a minimum of 10MB/s. So the faster the better...until you reach your budget limit http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/speed_class/
Anyway, can all card readers read SDHC cards? Or do they specifically need to support SDHC? I have a card reader from about 3 years ago, which does not seem to recognize a SDHC card once i plug it is, although the same SDHC card works in the card reader of my newer office laptop. I only have 1 SDHC card so i can't be sure if this is a card issue or card reader issue...any ideas?
Hey, I got a 4gb Panasonic SDHC free with my Lumix lx-3 but it doesn't work. keeps displaying memory error and ask for reformat. when at the shop it was fine but come back got problem
Should I just buy a new one or should i drive all the way to BB plaza from PJ to ask them if they know what's wrong?
*nvm, drove there and changed

I think because the reader is SD reader, not SDHC. Yesterday also I try like gila but hen I notice my SD reader dun haf SDHC
I see, thanks for letting me know. So i will just stick with USB cable. din't plan to buy a card reader.
Get a card reader like Apacer AM400 and it only costs RM 25.00, the transfer rate is very fast and I'm liking it every second. Some of the shops are selling at RM 45, so you gotta be smart in finding for the cheaper ones. I got mine from Viewnet LYP, a lot of pros in Canon thread recommended this little beast. It really makes wonder.
I bought Kingston Class 4 16GB and works like a charm for video too. I did hear about the incompatibility of Sandisk SDHC to do video on Canon EOS 550D but not sure of which specific Sandisk model.

just now went to Digital Mall survey abit SD card price, quite expensive.. Sandisk 4gb (class 4) - RM 59 Toshiba 4gb (class 4) - RM 49
i'm looking for Toshiba/Panasonic/Kingmax 4gb (class 6) to replace my current Nikon 4gb (class 2), coz i feel that this Nikon 4gb (class 2) running quite slow in my D3000 camera.

Just for sharing. Bought Apacer AM 401 for RM23 at Sri Comp, LYP. wonder whether the one with usb cable is better than the usb stick...

Good buy. It seems AM 401 has better writing speed, 8.3MBps compared to AM 400 at 7.4MBps. The reading rate is the same for both models, 19.1MBps. Of course AM 401 wins in term of convenience, it is like a thumbdrive unless mine has to find for the cable.
Sandisk really is good. But worth the price? Other class 10 cards are about 18mb/s average write throughput. Sandisk does 24mb/s.
Do you need 24mb/s? I guess so, if you are doing 7-8fps or HD videos all the time If not, i guess any normal class 6 or class 10 SDHC card should do. Heck, Nikon gives a class 2 card as default
You may be paying more for higher quality and reliability. If you read the article, you can see Sandisk gives a lifetime warranty but others like Transcend provide a 30-year warranty. I could live with a 30 year warranty....maybe...
just wondering, normal sdhc, minimum can stand how many Celsius and maximum can stand how many Celsius?
You can get that info from their website. e.g. Kingston: # Operating Temperature — -13º F to 185º F (-25º C to 85º C) # Storage Temperature — -40º F to 185º F (-40º C to 85º C)
So basically, SD cards are pretty durable, temperature wise. I don't think you would reach such temperatures normally, unless you are baking your camera or something...

thx,one more question, will cold temperature causes sdhc perform slow?
Does anyone know what are the cheapest prices i can get for 8GB cards?I checked in mid Valley just now, they were retailing around RM90-120 I think they are way overpriced
if it's for shooting HD videos (let's say for the new NEX5 camera), what do you think is the suitable card? do i need a class 10 card? or class 2 will do? any particular brand recommendation?

1. quality makes no difference whether Class 2 or Class 10. 2. speed wise - do you burst mode often? do you snap in RAW?
D5000 is only 12.9 MP. your fastest burst is 4 fps. video also 720p only.
i have class 2 and class 4 cards, snapping bigger MP and also 720p as yours - no sweat man.
yaya... i do in "RAW+FINE JPEG" for most cases now.. coz juz started.. then wanna have a deep detail on each pic i took btw, since the output is "RAW + FINE JPEG" ... so when i do post process, i shall edit the RAW then save as jpeg leh.. or just edit the FINE JPEG then share?
Goldfires, any input about Kingmax cards?I saw a 8GB and 16GB priced at RM8X and RM14X respectively......very very ridiculous prices. How is this brand?

from my experience
HD, as in 720p - works fine with Class 2 and Class 4.
1080p - best using Class 6 onwards.

off topic liao. post process of course from RAW la. waffor you snap in RAW and JPG to just edit JPG? unless brightness / contrast adjustment only.
in fact if you snap RAW, no reason for RAW + JPG unless you need to pass the JPG to others or need to modify quickly.

observe, decide. *I recommend going for Class 6 or faster card
not sure about other Camera brands but Canon users have experienced that some brands, though Class 6 or faster, have problem recording video.
@Goldie, u sure class 2 works fine with 720p? maybe is Canon different system? cos i record 720p video with D5000 using class 6 Transcend 4Gb(real class6? ) the video recording will cut off b4 even the time limit reach
but Sandisk Ultra class 4 works fine

Apparently Transcend has problems la. I've checked out others and they (using Canon) have problem with Transcends as well. Class 6 too if not mistaken.
The video just records a bit then poof - stop. same goes another person who asked me on FB - using Sandisk Class 4.
my Kingston Class 2 and Class 4 all no problem even with 1080p. can video until run out of space some more.

donno. Transcend i thought decent brand. I also donno la. All i know is my Kingston works. I've heard of Transcend and Sandisk failing.
oh btw, in i donno if what i face is Canon related or any video related la. in some cases, I record a few second it just stopped. what I do is just take out the SDHC and just blow it / rub it or whatever clean the contacts and put in. then ok already.

makes difference in camera with small buffer. once burst, the buffer will fill up and subsequent shots will be held back until the buffer is cleared into the memory card
Oh LOL! I didn't notice that either, but in that case, the HDD seems really slow?
yea lo.. haha wonder why so slow, maybe it's a really old HDD? anyway, would like to see selinix run the test on the card again. i guess you'll get 20 / 18+ like the other results

Haha is a 5400rpm hdd I guess. Almost 3 years old laptop.
Will run it once I get a card reader because I hardly use my laptop. Let my sister use more. Normally I just use the cable to transfer pictures

Ya maaaaaan. I wanna buy Red color Canon L memory card. Kekeke. Just bought a Sandisk Ultra 16gb to act as a redundant card. So cheap at rm152 only. The Sandisk Ultra 16gb CF card oso very cheap at rm209. Gonna buy that soon.
i just brought a lumix F2 camera recently. and it doesnt come with memory card so i have to buy one. but with cheap prices. which should i buy? i plan to get 4G only.

you can try toshiba sdhc...so far so good and the price quite reasonable
been a user for kingston, sandisk and transcend cards... never other brand and kingmax waterproof and it's high class cards attracts my attention...
checked and kingmax is a taipei brand... well, wondering are they really that good to give out lifetime warranty? i just dont want it to die on me and what matter most if my data kept inside!
p/s: not including Sandisk coz got compatibility issue with EOS 550D.
What problem with sandisk? mind to share? coz I'm using sandisk 8gb class 6 extreme III for 2 months already, recording 720, 1080p more than 10mins also no jerky. my friend also using 550D and the free SDHC class 4, stuck at 5s when recording 720p

You are one of the lucky ones. Most Sandisk users reported they couldn't record their video more than 4s on 550D. That's why I suggested to him on Canon thread to avoid Sandisk. We are not sure which series of Sandisk has compatibility issue.
Any user or comments on Transcend? looking to get 16GB either brand Transcend or Kingmax...
Sandisk Ultra/Extreme is way off budget... and i see that it's way overpriced too... too overated tho... maybe for the pros with pro gadget will need it... i dono but it's too expensive to me...

so for 550d user what do you suggest on memory card? let say I am going to snap picture and record 1080p?
I have both, the C6 and C10 Extreme IIIs. Both of them performs similar.
Agree, owner to both media as well. However, CL10 has the edge in read/write but not by much. Unless you looking for the peak performance/extra money to spare, then just get the CL10.
I got the panasonic gold class 10 8gb as free gift when I bought my 550D. Anyone has experience with this card? Is it any good?
What will be your expectation of "good"? Class 10 should be very good enough for HD video. If you wanna burst shot, 550D is not the right body to do the hard work. Too junior for it. You will need 1D bodies.
Coming from p&s the 3.7fps of 550D is very good for me already.
'good' in the sense of reliability, durability etc. As u know memory card is the most important thing when it comes to photography.
Since seldom hear about panasonic memory cards so I have some concern on it. Was thinking of getting sandisk but not sure which model got compatibility issue with 550D.

Yeah, I'm also using 550D.
Sandisk does have compatibility issue with 550D HD video, you may want to avoid it. However, some said only imitation Sandisk SDHC will have this problem, some lucky and have no problem. Still, users with HD video on 550D were using Sandisk... I'll recommend Kingston, so far none of them has issue, I'm one of the users too.

I have a bad experience with panasonic SD card. 5-6yrs ago, brought a panasonic sd card for my phone. After use for 2week, suddenly hit up and spoil. Claim for warranty. Get a new one. But use it later for camera on my holiday. But same problem. Hit up an spoil after take some shot. This time even worst. The camera also spoil. Cannot power up at all.

I just bought a 4gb San disk SDHC memory card from one of the trader around rm28 including postage. First,i thought its an replica then i called the distributor (vector digital sdnbhd) to verify of the authentic of this product,i got verifed its genuine.
btw, looking a head on some question,i browse thruway bumped into Ultra Speed 16x,Fast Reader 32x ... why they are so expensive compare to the normal..ehhh,are they supposed to be the same or the reading speed capability on the memory card is double up ?

Yes, it reads and writes much faster compared to normal SDHC.
Hmmm luckily it came as free gift. Prob get a better one next time.
Eh...Is it really luckily if it cause your camera spoil?
Anyway, not to worry too much. maybe it is isolate case and unlucky for me. But one thing for sure, the memory card can spoil the camera if the card have problem.
oic.. thanks. i hope testi around this thread would give me more information and advise.
and also, can we notice the performance if the mmc insert into our DSLR ?
Usually the class difference only can be seen in HD videos. Most of the cases, body takes a more crucial role compared to cards. So if you buy a high end card but using it in a entry level body, you can't really see the difference.

i'm using panasonic 4gb class4 sdhc that came with my lumix LX3. working veri well for me, no heating up issue. and it's made in japan as well speed wise it's kinda fast for me. (quoted 20MB/s read speed i think)
I hav a sandisk ultra sdhc.. Dere goes d problem: transfer rate at computer a is way much more slower den computer b.. Y lik dat? Computer issue? It's jus like transfering using USB 1.0 n USB 2.0... Lol
I'm using Card reader of the computer itself? Can be identify either its 1.0 o 2.0 ar? I mean for the card reader..
So I guess it is the card reader problem. Card reader does make a difference though.
I have an Apacer AM 400 that has a writing speed of 7.4MBps and reading speed of 19.1MBps, no matter I use it with any PC, the speed doesn't show any difference. You may want to invest into a better card reader, I bought this for only RM 25 and it could be cheaper other place. Worth for the money!
There is a forummer here that bought Apacer AM 401 instead, for only RM 23 at Sri Comp LYP. It has faster writing speed and same reading speed as AM 400.
Transcend is doing a good job for me so far, class 6 and very cheap compared to its competitors. Pair it with sandisk card reader to get blazing fast speeds

Juz wanna share wat i got from other forum.

if cannot record HD isn't that due to whether the card has the minimum write speed n not so much on SD compatibility?
Well, Canon EOS 550D does have compatibility issue with Sandisk cards, not sure if these buyers were unfortunate to buy the fake cards but they can't record HD videos for more than 4 seconds irregardless of any Class.
On another hand, so far Kingston and Kingmax have no problem, there are also Sandisk users who have no problem, so not sure what's the real root problem.
Thus, for safety purpose, I always suggest the 550D fellows to avoid buying Sandisk.
Currently using the free "Not For Sale" Pendrive 8GB Class 4 that came with my Panasonic Lumix LX-5. Although I'm using a middle range camera, i'm doing alot of 720p video recording. So far, the class 4 Pendrive card is handling it well.
The LX-5 comes with a feature called Motion JPEG, which requires at least class 6 to run. I'm thinking of getting another card, maybe a Sansdisk 8GB Class 6 or 10. After reading all 11 pages of this thread:
1. Anyone compared shooting 720p/1080p videos with class 6 and 10 cards (preferably of the same brand, but its ok if its not)?
2. Seems that not all cameras work with the famous Sandisk cards. I doubt the shops will allow to try b4 buying Any suggestions?
3. What software do you guys use to get the SD card details (read/write speeds)? I'm downloading SiSoftware now.
Btw, this is an informative thread. Keep up the good work. Thanks!

I have been using Sandisk on my Canon all the way without any problems...maybe like you say they are unlucky enough to buy fake cards
yup..Canon EOS 550D. I bought the Sandisk Ultra III something like that
Good for you. I think by luck, my friend bought a Sandisk 8GB SDHC at quite cheaply priced, and he thought it was a fake SDHC but still continues using it and can record HD videos with no problem. I'm not saying all Sandisk cards have problem with 550D but too many users have reported to have problem with Sandisk when use it on their 550Ds. So as a suggestion to all 550Ds users, maybe you can try other brands besides Sandisk cards because you might not know if you will have problem with it.
Better clarify this else Sandisk sues me...

I am the unlucky ones, I cannot record 1080P 25fps more than 10 seconds, using Sandisk 8GB Class4
How much the different between CL4 and CL6 or CL10? Price alot different?
Why not just get the higher CL. And avoid the risk of slow write. Is the price worst to take the risk?
actually, the sustained sequential write is more for photography & video. Class is only to show the minimum attained speed, but whether a card can sustain such speed over a period of time is what's important to prevent data loss & corruption. this is where the different brand of cards has different performance, thus the different pricing.
in otherwords, certain brand card are simply pricier becoz their sustained write speed outperform others, even tho having lower class rating. class rating is the least meaningful thing to consider if you are into burst mode & raw photo taking.

Sorry my word mistake. What I mean is the price different between CL4 and CL6 or CL10. Not the write speed.
Is it worst to take the risk to get the lower CL just to save a few bucks. Why not just take the higher CL in order your camera run smooth and without problem.

I am not misunderstanding yr words. i know what you wanted to say. And i stick to what i said, i dont buy according to class. i buy according to the actual write speed the card can perform. just because a card is rated class 6, it might not neccessary perform better than a "good" class 4 that has their sustained write speed performing above their class. e.g panasonic & sandisk class 4 SDHC.
google around for SDHC speed test done by others, and you will see certain cards perform very fast for sustain write even though they are sold as class 4, even better than certain class 6. class rating is not the best indication for performance.

guys, Silicon Power 16GB Class 10 SDHC Memory Card.. shashinki sell for RM99. so cheap.. any1 have problems using it? Is it compatible with canon 550D?
does it make any speed difference using SDHC vs MicroSD SDHC adaptor...
technically it does , but reality unless you're having a fast fps , it doesn't matter.. but its better to stick back to sdhc if your camera is meant for sdhc.
I'm using a sandisk 8gb class 4 in a 600D...i can record longest is 30secs per clip b4 it stops automatically...is it normal? Or it can actually record for longer duration per clip? Shud I get a better card? Some advice needed, newbie in HDSLR video recording

I have a Transcend 8GB Class 10. Initially it has no problem shooting Full HD videos continuously but after I format the card once with my Canon 60D, the same problem as yours started to occur.
Btw, I will be bulking some 16GB Sandisk Extreme HD Video 30mB/s (200X) read/write at very good price. Stay tune.

that one too expensive. Moreover, is it necessary to get 45mb/s?
from the market price the gap is not too much(the last time i see,or the 30mb/s version getting cheaper?) and the uhs-1 is effective for camera that utilize the new buses, like nikon d7000

Interested in your bulk of 16GB Sandisk Extreme at good price BTW, any different between SanDisk Extreme HD Video SDHC & original SanDisk Extreme SDHC Class 10? Are they same Classes? Also, found that there are 2 models of SanDisk Extreme HD Video SDHC, 1 is 20 MB/s & 1 is 30 MB/s. Are their Classes different? Thanks in advance.
While searching for my monster Sandisk 128gb Extreme pro CF card I came across this...biggest I think in its class not even sandisk have this...but sandisk have the 128GB CF that lexar don't have
anybody got it? feedback just curious...

I will make sure my 16GB 30MB/s price will have quite a distance from 45MB/s.

Class is the minimum speed the card will read/write - Class 6 mean the card should be able to do at least 6MB/s, Class 10 at least 10MB/s., etc. I am not really sure why but i think the higher Class base rating is max at 10 at the moment and the standard will move to UHS Speed. Please do correct me if I am wrong coz I am not 100% sure about this speed rating.
So even if the cards are the same at Class 10, some will write at the minimum 10MB/s while other may write faster at 15MB/s, 20MB/s, 30MB/s or 45MB/s. To distinguish itself from the normal Class 10 card, some manufacturer like Sandisk states more accurate speed rating - 15MB/s, 20MB/s or 30MB/s on their Class 10 card. So even though 20 MB/s and 30MB/s SanDisk Extreme HD Video SDHC are both Class 10, their writing speed are definitely different.

My 8GB Kingston died after 7 month use. Is anyone have the same problem with Kingston? I have other Sandisk 8GB which is more than 3 years working fine.

Yeah. Will do. Bu it is not about warranty. It about the photo taken is gone. It is suddenly stop functioning while take a photos. Luckily had other SD cards. BTW I am using Nikon D5000. Should be invest in more reliable SD card.
if my camera transfer speed is slow, even class 10 sdhc doesnt help as well right?
if you are talking about transferring photos from your camera to PC then you can remove the SD Card from camera and use a card reader to transfer. In this case, fast card reader and fast SD Card will make a difference.

any nice "fast" card reader [SDHC] recommend?.... Those i bought from lowyat around RM10-20 not that performance well

cynox, wat im saying is from camera to SD card
what camera are you using? So you are saying the writing speed of the SD card when you take the pictures? Do you know what is the writing speed of the sd card of your camera?
hey guys, what's the difference between class 10 and class 6 SDHC? Is the read/write speed?
I already posted that info in previous pages...

Just bought a kingston 16gb SDHC Class 10 for ~RM70-75 at digital mall.
Has the price of SD cards drop recently? I was tracking the silicon power 16gb c10 for RM99 as the cheapest card previously. Sandisk same spec usually 100-200+.

wow, very cheap..my I know which shop you bought ur kingston 16 GB SDHC class 10?
seems like not much difference...or maybe we need to test it using sandisk card reader perhaps?
I'm using my built in Asus G73Jh notebook's card reader when I did this test. Perhaps next time, I will make another test if I got myself a decent card reader
Transcend class 16gb, 30mb/s got it for rm89 reason why i use this memory card is because its cheap, lifetime warranty, and never failed me even when i do recording in full hd or 720p 60fps

Hmm I think as long as you buy a memory card which has black casing or white casing, you wont go wrong. But the one with blue casing SD cards will have slower transfer rate. I don't know why but I did this research in my college project and it seems to be true...
Uh oh.... it's like saying red or yellow painted car will always go faster...
hahahaha what sort of logic is that right?
Btw, I found out that black compact cameras seem to perform better than light coloured ones. I don't know why but I did this research in my college project and it seems to be true...

Many in the Canon L lens series are white in color. According to Canon, this reduces heat gain when a lens is used in bright, direct sunlight. White reflects more light than black - thus, less heat gain.
need to know if class 10 kingston SD10V/8GB good for normal compact camera use..?
i mean like taking pic with 16mp compact camara..? and some 720p records..?
thanks for reply...
so far my experience with Kingston is not that good, be it CF or SD.
I've got Transcend 16GB SD Class 10. So far so good, the transfer rate to computer using USB2.0 is comparable to CF card. Practical use with video recording 1080p on my DSLR is also quite ok

juz wondering if it works well on recording 720p for new compact canon models... planning to get 1 actually...
Im not rich,Im just buy a normal memry card only..
haha, its not about rich or not. its about how the card do for you. let say that you buy some sort of cheap normal memory card, and yes, you capture a really unforgeable. and for somehow suddenly your memory card dropped on floor/on the cup of tea or anything.. why would you do? for some reason, I like to invest some durable or maybe reputable memory card. or AT LEAST the memory card that had been tested by your camera manufacture.

i got my scandisk 16gb class 10 extreme.. 100x.. for RM57 frm digital mall.. i think the shop misquoted. i didnt argue jus paid and left the shop a happy man.

Off topic, but isn't X100 well known for speed issue?
used to. the new firmwares make focus A LOT faster than when it first came out.
but anyways, a lot of cameras (except some newer ones) don't and cannot utilise the SDXC speed increase over SDHC, thus why I said "speed king" which referred to my 32gb SDXC card, not the cam

Something strange. The left is old Toshiba 8GB CLS 2, Right is Sandisk 8GB CLS 4. Class 4 writing slower??
RYOU, can you share the link of this speed test. There are so many fakes, one would not know if buying the real one or fake one, fake one likely will not say what is printed on the SDHC card, perhaps your comparison of toshiba and scandisk one of them is fake ?
