Utd veterans ready for run-in
QUOTE Veteran Manchester United duo Paul Scholes and Gary Neville believe the team can benefit from their vast experience in their final eight games and clinch another title. Table-toppers United are bidding for their fourth straight championship, a record in itself which would also see them seal a further record in their 19th top-flight title. The Red Devils currently lead Chelsea, who they face at Old Trafford next month, and Arsenal by two points, having played a game more than the Blues. Neville, 35, has eight Premier League medals to his name while long-time team-mate Scholes, also 35, edges him with nine, but both players feel their know-how can have a say in their remaining eight games this term. "I'd like to think we have the right players, ones who have been there before and know how tough it can be to win the Premier League," Scholes told The Mirror. "The game against Chelsea at Old Trafford is going to be massive and we know we need to win that one. "But that's not the only important match. If we want to win the title, we're going to have to win every game. It's a tough ask, but I'm sure we can achieve it. "We've had some good results against Chelsea at Old Trafford. At Stamford Bridge we've struggled a little bit, but with the United fans behind us we've got the better of them. "This match is crucial with such a big prize up for grabs and it could have a big impact on the title race." Neville Neville, meanwhile, admits this season has had its ups and downs with all three of the title challengers regularly losing games to teams lower down the table. The former England international knows what it takes to edge a title at this stage of the season, and he believes consistency can strike fear into those around them. "These are the moments when you want to hit consistency and win every game you can because you know that losing games at this stage of the season can have a big impact," Neville told the Daily Star. "I think all three teams at the top can still win it. Arsenal, Chelsea and ourselves are all in it in what has been a weird season for us because if we'd played a normal season we'd have probably been seven or eight points clear by now. "We are hopeful that we can hit that consistent level of form that we have done in previous seasons. We know that a consistent run now can be devastating and winning games will have a real impact on other teams. "We need to continually win games and cut out mistakes at this stage of the season because it will be who puts the best run together who wins it." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_6030140,00.html Forward march QUOTE Michael Carrick feels that the excellent recent form of United's two main strikers can fire the Reds to glory at a crucial stage of the campaign. United's three goals against Fulham came courtesy of a Wayne Rooney brace and Dimitar Berbatov's late header, in the latest in a string of eye-catching performances from the predatory pair. "I thought Berba was terrific against Fulham and he has been for a number of weeks," Carrick told MUTV after the victory over the Cottagers. "Last week at Wolves was a big performance being upfront on his own, and he really deserved his goal at the end. He did terrifically well for Wayne's second and his overall play was very good, so he's hitting top form at the right time." Rooney, who took his personal tally for the season to 32 goals on Sunday, continues to exhaust superlatives with his exploits. But Carrick feels his club and country colleague would happily share the goalscoring mantle, so long as the Reds end the season with more silverware. "There's still a while to go, but his goals-to-games ratio this season is incredible," added the midfielder. "I'm sure he'll keep playing for the performance. "If he can keep scoring goals or he makes them for someone else, he'll say himself that as long as we're winning and picking up trophies then it'll be a good season. "It's obviously nice for Wayne at the minute - the goals are flying in left, right and centre. It's just a shock that he didn't score a header!" http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6647299 Giggs in fitness race for Liverpool clash QUOTE Stuart Mathieson March 16, 2010 Ryan Giggs is fighting to be fit for Sunday's big Premier League showdown with Liverpool. United's 11-times title winner has been out of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad since fracturing his arm five weeks ago. The 36-year-old hurt himself in an accidental collision against Aston Villa at Villa Park last month. He has missed seven matches, including both AC Milan ties and the Carling Cup final. But the winger started full- contact training with the Reds first team on Tuesday and the sessions this week will determine whether Fergie will have the bonus of his experience in Sunday's vital lunchtime clash against United's bitter rivals. Giggs is set to have the plate that was inserted into his arm following the incident removed in the summer. Since the setback Giggs has been cycling and swimming at United's Carrington training HQ and is now just match sharpness away from a comeback. If all goes well in training this week Fergie and the Reds medical staff are set to assess him before the Liverpool match at Old Trafford to determine whether he can be included. But it is looking good for the club's record appearance- maker. His form this term, though only starting in 16 matches, has already earned him a new 12-month contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2011. Giggs' return would be a major bonus for Fergie who has started the Welshman in the majority of United's heavyweight games this season. He was in the XI for the matches against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea and also began both Carling Cup semi-final ties against City. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/spo...liverpool_clash |

Manchester United Worker Sacked For Wearing Green And Gold Anti-Glazer Scarf
QUOTE A Manchester United catering worker at Old Trafford has been sacked for donning a green and gold scarf whilst he worked during the Red Devils' recent Champions League tie with AC Milan. Jerry Vyse, 21, of Fallowfield, Manchester, decided to show his suport for the campaign aiming to wrest control of the club from current owners the Glazer family. However, for sporting one of the protesters' distinctive scarves he lost his job. The movement has adopted the green and gold colours as a reference to the club's origins as Newton Heath, but Vyse soon discovered that his personal protest would not be tolerated. "I bought the scarf outside of the stadium," the first year anthropolgy student told The Manchester Evening News. "I told the vendor I would be wearing it to work at Old Trafford for my shift for that evening’s game against AC Milan. He warned me that some staff were sacked on the spot for doing that." Ironicially perhaps, former United idol David Beckham, playing for Milan that night, picked up and wore one of the green and gold scarves after the game as he applauded the crowd. Beckham later claimed that he did not know that the scarf was a sign of protest. Vyse was applauded by many of the fans to whom he served food and drink last week before his employment at Old Trafford was brought to a premature end. "The supervisor came round and ordered me to remove it [the scarf]," Vyse added. "This was met with jeers from the United supporters, most of whom had the scarf on themselves. "When I refused, the supporters cheered. He was then booed when he put the queue on hold to enter the kiosk and request I leave with him because my scarf was ‘anti-Glazer’." http://goal.com/en/news/9/england/2010/03/...-green-and-gold This post has been edited by ljf123: Mar 16 2010, 07:57 PM |

QUOTE(alien2003 @ Mar 16 2010, 07:45 PM) Again. Please, is it too hard to follow a simple request? The moderating team has been giving a little bit of leniency in this issue (we do understand its part & parcel of the game) BUT if it start to get out of control then it will give us no choice but to review that decision again. QUOTE(Ken @ Mar 16 2010, 12:37 PM) if united can't win this match with pool has to play in mid week, it means they really better then united ... in terms of manager tactic ... Or they could just be our 'bogey' team. A lot of times the lesser sides do win in these type of contest.. rivalry. Form and ability doesn't mean a thing.QUOTE(Ken @ Mar 16 2010, 02:28 PM) what to say ... who ask united drop points against burnley in the 2nd league outing ... if that match end with draw, the 1 point gained make so much difference and important now ... That's how the world works. You can't win all the time. That's just the way it is.still, the title is in united hand ... win all remaining matches ... trophy remained in manchester ... btw, lets support chelsea tonight ... if not ... they will have more rest time in the EPL matches ... the quarterfinal is sandwiched between man united v chelsea fixture ... i guess all united fans wants the 19th title more rather then the CL ... QUOTE(verbatim @ Mar 16 2010, 03:01 PM) Retaining BPL is more important than winning CL.. What is the point of boasting european champions when not even champions of england... I will gladly take either one at this point. If we win the league and fell short again in Europe, I'll be disappointed. But we will always be the favourites for the league as long as we keep the core of our players here. While it will still be a disappointment to lose the league title, but if we win the CL, that would be fantastic and more than make up for it. It is much harder to win the CL. Now that we are a regular in the latter stages of the competition, we should make the most of it. In 3-5 years things could change with Italians back as the favourites while English clubs decline. We're already on par with Liverpool right now in terms of league title, it's time for us to catch them and the other European giants in terms of CL wins. We will always challenge and have a chance of winning the league, while the CL which is a cup competition depends on a lot of factors.. luck, form on the night etc.QUOTE(unknown @ Mar 16 2010, 04:44 PM) He's innocent! The despicable Brown have a magnetic field which absorbs Gerrard's arm towards his head there. |
