QUOTE(rotisejuk @ Apr 1 2010, 12:41 AM)
Since nobody's started to state the obvious about the recently ended event, i'll start on a few things that could have been done better during the event:
BTW, i mainly attended as a spectator for COD 4 so my rants will be mostly be about the COD 4 event...
Firstly, this applies to the entire event, what happened to the electricity management? I'm well aware that during the first matches of the day for the LAN events (dota, CS and COD 4), the power tripped not once, not twice, but three times. I can't tell what the cause of it all was, but the amount of power plugs for the PCs connected to all those extension cords that were then connected to more extension cords and finally connected to TWO power plugs. It might be a clue, you know. Because even in my home of three phase circuits, i can get a power overload if i turn on a gazillion switches using so much amp and voltage at the same time. Plus, when the computers were being packed up, i noticed that every single time one island's power was turned off, the entire hall's power went out as well. And this happened in the middle of the COD 4 and CS matches. I mean, in an event of such scale, does this really happen? Event if it does...rarely, but so many times in a row? I think the organizers or whoever was in charge of electricity could have done a better job to avoid all these power outages from occurring one after another.
Some people noticed that most of the crowd on the first day of the event, and i mean there was a huge crowd, left because of the non-stop power outages in the morning of the first day. I'll bet they didn't bother coming back the second day either.
Second would be the time management issue. I believe the only LAN event to finish on time was Dota? Good job to the people who ran the dota event. Correct me if i'm mistaken, but i was informed that all the the organizers knew very well that the PCs would have to be packed up latest by 9 pm.
And, i'm very sure somehow the news of a closing ceremony was passed around to all the organizers as well? The gamers had to pause their games throughout the closing ceremony. The CS and COD 4 players were in the midst of their games, and it's not like we need a half-hour strat time break to discuss strats. Could something have been done to halt the rounds before the closing ceremony started? There really should be more communication between the organizers and the ones running the games...
Usage of third party programs in COD 4. Correct me if i'm wrong, but third party programs are not allowed in COD 4. It was event stated in the rules and regulations. The players should be well aware that, towards the second half of matches during the second day, some teams used Ventrillo to communicate with each other. I'm sure the main reason for this is that the coms had problems with certain hardware like sound cards, etc. So, the sound wasn't perfect. If the organizers had carried out the necessary tests to make sure that all devices on the computers were running properly and suited for the game, then it would have been an unavoidable risk to the players. I'm sure players were already well informed to bring any gear and devices, software needed to run the game and hardware properly.
Ventrillo is a third party program, which is prohibited by the rules and regulations in COD 4. Basically it's an outside program that allows you to talk to everyone using the software as long as you are in the same "room". This chat applies to whoever is in the room, regardless if you are dead or alive in-game. The COD 4 rules state that you're not allowed to report/speak to a teammate if you are dead. However, you may speak to those who are dead. Ventrillo allows you to bypass this rule and your chat is heard by everyone in the room. There's no qualms with the in-game chat that is built-in to COD 4 because the "death silence" rule is already built into the system. I'm not accusing anyone of "death chat", but you can't be 100% certain that nobody broke the rule either. So, the organizers should not have allowed the use of Ventrillo in the first place. That way, it doesn't give any additional doubt to any parties involved.
The previous MMU gamefest for COD 4, which was held last year, was a failure. There was no cash prize, the computers did not properly support COD 4 up to competitive standards and the software was not even installed before the tournament. I remember waiting around until after lunchtime before the proper installation and patching had been completed. This time, frankly, all that MMU has managed to do for the COD 4 section is to soup up the computers and give us ONE island to play with inside a huge hall. With all those big time sponsors pitching into the event, I'd say the overall power outages, PC problems, software/driver glitches here and there made it a very memorable event, indeed.
I'll say that a good job was done preparing for the other things. Like the rubix cube, the cup stacking, board games, console games and etc. But eh LAN event just cropped up disaster after disaster. I'd expect it from last year's MMU gamefest due to the lack of support and seemingly lack of preparation. But this time, with all the hype and performance PCs from warmart, I would have expected much, much more from an event on a scale such as this.
Some people i know, event took some time off their busy schedule to just come and watch the failboat. That itself, is disappointing enough. I really hope that MMU will learn from their mistake THIS year...and make NEXT year an event worthy of sore eyes and uninterested feet.
Dear rotisejuk, I'm truly thankful for your comments in this thread. As usual, there are always clarifications (not excuse) to our events and everybody should gain some share of knowledge towards the problem as mis-communication always occurs. I will clarify from the point I'm responsible or may know more info that some of you have.
As for the electricity part, I believe, my partner-in-crime Chris had mentioned regarding how we do the fixtures on it and test run it the whole entire day and night prior to the event. So, no need to use any further jargons on those electricity part. But there is something that you have to understand is that, this event is run across MMU Grandhall. Although we have our Professional Contractor on electricity that helped us to pull the electricity and make sure everything is running smoothly, there are some of the places that MMU reserved it as for their PnC and also, their property. That even for students or organizers of events, we are not allowed to use it. Apart from that, our power outages did not black out the whole hall but just on the LAN Games division, I hope you are clear about it and everybody (if you are there) will know that the aircon, lights and all other divisions are still running except for the LAN Games part. As for the quote that many people left after three power outages, is that, we actually assigned our committees to ask most of the audience, participants, players and etc. to go and have some food and beverages before we continue our event. WE believe that the match will be a whole day event, thus, our solution to solve and reduce the commotion is to ask our dear visitors to grab some foods and drinks while we can draw more attention on the problem. I believe you see that some people left the hall, but the purpose is to delay some of their time. We have to apologise on that misleading trick, but at least we are trying to control the havoc from running lose.
For the DotA competition, yes I believe you are right that, Juzaguy (from flying spaghetti monster) did indeed a very good job on monitoring the progress of the game. Apart from that, from how you view it, DotA doesn't play on 4 islands, they played on 8 islands. The other islands that you guys didn't see is in the labs, as we have requested the lab to be used for the competition. From our past experience, our labs can never be a good place for CS or COD gaming events, thus why do we risk that, plus we are able to get better PCs from supportive hardware personnel like WarMart. I hope you understand this situation cause for COD4, before I continue with the lab issues, you already know what I'm going to say.
As for the closing ceremony, the players are actually allowed to play for the competition and in fact, our dear President and Student Activities Division requested us to continue only for the competitors, but the rest to face forward. Due to some miscommunication, and CS players told us that they are willing to wait as to pay respect for the President, they stopped for the competition.
I believe you, rotisejuk knows that sometimes if we are not good enough to do something, we either choose not to do or outsource other people who have better technical expertise. You can say, 'Yeah, you noob organizers!'. We are willing to accept that comments on that, because simply, 'We are newbies in COD4 events, plus this is only the second time MMU (I mean solely GDC or MMU ourselves, not Cyberfusion), we are trying to do this'. We are trying to expand our horizon in types of E-Games, that we even wrote a letter to the Dean upon finishing ConvoFest competition for better graphic cards to run better competition next time. Before I go on further, yes, we choose to Outsource ESPGL because they offer to help us and to raise more COD4 competition since August last year. We are not being lazy or not trying to improve ourselves, but at some point, many of us are not COD players thus we truly need their help for that. And there we got our help! So, for those things regarding the third party program stuff, we are still very new and we take it as a lesson to learn. Also regarding outsourcing, we know our PCs in the labs sucks big time, we also outsource our equipment this time from WarMart, to raise the spirit of E-Sports and Game Development, not up to just in Malaysia, but to motivate and encourage the juniors in MMU to be part of this industry.
And you talked about our previous COD4 competition. I hope you are sure which competition you are mentioning but I can help you to understand better. The first series of GameFest is collaborative work with Cyberfusion, thus the COD4 events is not done by us, neither do we know any single thing about it, because all we do is to help them to get sponsors (for COD events I mean). As for the COD4 competition that was held in August, that is ConvoFest LAN Games competition and that was the first COD4 competition that I mentioned, done solely by us with the help of ESPGL. During that time, we actually plan to cancel the competition upon knowing that all our labs truly cannot work for COD4 Competition. However, ESPGL's best talent guy, Falk was able to do his magic with his tricks and tweaks. And we did consult ESPGL and ESPGL did informed the players as well, that our PCs could not support that well. Players during that time, do know the situation and did not complain much as they know that we did inform them earlier, or simply we would want to cancel it. And due to lack of COD4 competition back then, as I was informed, players are willing to play in our competition, thus we bring in COD4. I'm sorry if you are one of the participant, but I do hope that you did get informed regarding the competition.
And I think there are some words that you have to take back is that, for COD4 competition during ConvoFest in August, we did provide cash prizes of RM 1000, RM 650 and RM 450. We couldn't get much sponsor during that time, but our kind Offgamers sponsor did chip in some stuff for the prizes as well. And during that time, there are registration fees and during this time, as COD players that officially registered were only 10 teams as on Friday night, we wouldn't dare to continue our competition, because we are not funded by a big budget. AT some point I hope you understand that our events are not solely on profit but on performance based in our university. Our budget are scraped from all our sponsors and discounts from every contractors that we can. And for the cancellation of the competition, we do not want to let our COD players who are supportive (the 14 teams) down, we continue our competition with FREE REGISTRATION as we would want to give out the sponsors' products.
There is two things that we truly appreciate about from you is that, 1) even you are not actively competing in COD4 compy, you came and support us. 2) your kind feedback on our thread. And also, from that, we actually got some negative comments from our sponsors regarding COD4 events. WE truly believe that we can continue pursue further, like getting to know more knowledge from our fall-back CS competition last year, we did a come back to do better this year, and we hope we did. or at least, all the CS players are happy and thankful on our competition, just the same as for all the DotA players. I'm not saying that COD players are not thankful, as I always commented to ESPGL teams that ESPGL people are the most discipline at some point. And from some (not all) positive feedback from previous event, we continue this COD4 competition. And I believe, we truly are not up to you guys' expectation (probably you guys are thinking like pro-organizers like ESP, LucidEvent, Go Intl.) nah..we simply are not, and never thought we are, but we are learning to be. That's what students' life in university are, as the interesting part for us as students, is the learning curve to know what industry or field to penetrate in the future. Your comments are nothing but the truth (though some me and Chris did clarify), I hope students who are organizing events will truly learn and not get hampered by such constructive criticism. As you say is such a failboat, probably mean that we are not good enough, for some. So, I believe, for our future events, we will try not to include COD4 competition, not in the near future I believe, unless with highly professional supervision, maybe some like you can come and guide us throughout the organizing process, with all testing the hardware, checking with our hardware personnel.
I believe my comments are always long, that is the usual me, braggy as hell. But I hope most of the parties get to know some of the information BEHIND THE SCENES,as there are a lot more slack-back that we didn't even want to mention. So that's it from me and thanks for your comment again.

Why do you take the time to format a
forum post like some desk pilot's formal letter then ruin it with 'lolx'?

Falk
