I know plaster ceiling looks nice but beside nice, are there any practical usage of it ??

Is it used to conceal some wirings ?

Also is the top of the plaster ceiling hollow ? Normally is it the whole ceiling is covered or only a portion of it ?

usually depends on how much ur budget la, if budget big then may cover the whole ceiling. but make sure your house have a tall ceiling or else your house will look small with plaster ceiling.

nice is main reason but also with plaster ceiling, you can put those light which can be fitted into the ceiling. also can conceal some piping in some house.

what is minimum height to have a nice plaster ceiling ?

Most double storey house ceiling height will be around 10 feets. Nice or not nice plaster ceiling depend on workmanship.

depends on what kinda plaster ceilling u r doing, average u need to spare about 1 ft for plaster ceilling, if ur ceilling height is 9ft like some of the condo, u only get 8ft ceilling after doing plaster ceilling. Make cornies is better in this case. anyhow, L box will help to save some heights.

we are talking about a house arent we? then you should replace the old asbestos ceiling since asbestos fibres can cause cancer. get them professionally removed without the guys braking them and releasing fibres into your house. then redo the ceiling (same hight and all as before or even raise it if you want to) with plaster ceiling. seal is better (less dust) and you can insulate you house either with thicker ceiling or fibre mats or cellulose.

<8ft = Too low.
8-10ft = Acceptable for condo/apartment. Not for landed residential units.
11-14ft = Comfortable, aircon ventilation can easily ventilates. 1.0-1.5hp A/C is sufficient.
>14ft = Comfortabe, more space but needs more ventilation. A/C need to be more than 1.5hp.

how to know if the ceiling is using old asbestos or not ?

if it doesnt have plaster ceiling but the square plates with wooden lining it's most likely asbestos. is this the house in SS3? if so the it's most likely asbestos unless previous owner removed it already. i am not too far from SS3 and my house (build in the 50s) sure had it.

i think the aircon advise is too general. a/c needs will require on your insulation level, wether or not got fans (and where) and the room area. it's not just derived by ceiling height. i would want the ceiling heigh enough to but a ceiling fan in it and be able to walk under it without fearing that i might loose my head

I bought a 2nd hand house with the asbestos ceiling boards. I am planning to change them to plaster ceilings.

Just wondering if anyone can give me some suggestions:
1) maintain the asbestos boards but add plaster ceiling boards beneath it. This is for extra insulation by the existing asbestos board (maybe more cooling?) and also as 2nd layer protection from leaking roof.
2) or just remove existing asbestos and replace entirely with new plaster ceiling.

Which one is better?

asbestos is a health hazard IF fibres get loose. I'd get it professionally removed if you do renovation. then install the plaster ceiling (thicker type) + insulate it. i have had better experience with cellulose than with stone fibre mats.

you think can adjust roof height to be higher when changing to ceiling to the one you mention ?

prefer not to install plaster ceiling, unless to cover pipings, etc. nicer to have houses with higher roofs. think its older ppl's taste to install plaster ceilings like my father n father in law. lol

Other then plaster ceiling and the asbestos ceiling given by developer , what other type of ceiling suitable?

even raise it thats great..........but would they cost more i planning to do plaster to but only for whole living + dining + kitchen...not planning to do my bedrooms yet.......and to make it rise higher would be great my house is just a single story unit....

just got my room done with plaster ceiling. looks nicer and grand compare to the design it used to be cause my house is a old design house. will post some photo to share later.

Make your house HOTTER because the ceiling is LOWERED.

Waste more money because you need air-con to stay inside the house.

cannot got uneven/tiang or whatever at ceilling, so do plaster ceiling.
