QUOTE(gnsumas @ Feb 1 2010, 09:15 PM) I can't actually confirm it, but plenty of forumers who bought PS3s from Singapore carried them over without getting taxed by breaking the seal beforehand. I'm not saying its hard to escape tax for SG items brought in by land, but if you're unlucky like me, you'll get taxed. Back to the original point, TS' friend is coming in from Taiwan, so i'd say its near m-impossible to escape. I suggest to get MSIA set too.. Warranty is a lifesaver This post has been edited by ps3roxor: Feb 2 2010, 03:00 AM

let me share with you guys about what i experience. I bought the PS3 in US and brought it to penang. there were transits in japan and singapore, and in US the custom saw my mgs4 bundle box and said it to me "MGS4? COOL!!! I like that game!" and he purposely scan my box in and out repeatedly just to play with my box..... then in japan while waiting in the line for luguage scan, the pilot of my flight saw me carry the bundle box and said he likes that bundle and cheap......while reach my turn for bag scan in japan airport... after scaning the japanese staff all look at my ps3 bundle box as there is Konami word and MGS4 and they said: HIDEO KOJIMA!! (I just love their face expression ) then in singapore airport nothing happen, then reach penang nothing happen too! just the custom said "wow! you got a ps3?" and I reply"yeah..." overall just some weird and random yet funny experience i ever had... Warranty is a lifesaver Are you are saying that everything you bought on the duty free zone needed to pay tax when you come in? Then does that mean even if I bought alcohol, cigarettes and etc from the airport and I will need to pay tax when I landed in KLIA or any airport? The thing is you are entitle to bring in some goods without getting taxed. That is you do not abused their limit. Some places you can bring in 4 carton of cigarettes while some other country you can only bring in 2. If everything is going to be taxed no way ppl will buy anything in the airport.

Honestly Melt, if you read the much earlier post, I said each item belongs to a category and when the item you bring in is above a certain value in that category then you will be taxed. QUOTE(ps3roxor) When you bring in something from another country, it is consider importing. The tax applies when your item is above a certain value for the category that your item belongs to. In our case here, we're talking about consumer electronics, the PS3. You won't get taxed if you bring in a china MP3 player worth Rm100-200. always unbox (throw away the box) ur electronic item if u buy them overseas.
it is recommended to buy electronic item locally for warranty purpose. cause you'll have problem when the item is spoil..especially electronic item.

unbox it.. and carry it in your bag... if you have 1 unit.. it is consider your personal use item..
if you bring back spanking new in box... you have to show receipt how long is the item being bought overseas.. to be safe at least 3 months away then custom wont charge you..

Agree. Breaking seal and removing all wrapping will change it's status to personal effect, meaning that you buy it for personal use while overseas, and it's non-taxable. Alternatively can further ask your friend to declare it as computer (which is technically correct- it has CPU, has RAM, has hard disk, can connect keyboard and mouse, and can surf internet). Computer equipment incur zero duty and tax iirc. To be safe ask him to get a USB keyboard and mouse with it (yes, PS3 can use USB keyboard and mouse. Makes navigating the XMB a game ) On the other hand, Taiwan and Malaysia units are one the same. Better to just pay up a bit more for local warranty.
