I recently won a bidding for an iPhone 3G on eBay. I did some study about the shipping procedures and other stuff before I actually bid for it. I was shocked to discover later after I won that I have to apply for some kind of permit from SIRIM. It has never occured to me that a used item also needs to go through SIRIM inspection. Can someone please confirm this. I read a similar post on the subject but it wasn't really clear in terms of the steps to take before asking the seller to shipout the merchandise. Bottomline, has anyone in this forum ever gone through this process? Can someone please list out the steps we need to take when declaring the package? How do we apply for this so called permit? How much are we looking at (in terms of total cost for custom and SIRIM side)? How long does it take to apply for this permit? I surfed over to SIRIM website and I was kinda blur as to which form I was suppose to download. These things were never mentioned on eBay sites (be it .com.my, .uk, .au, etc.). The only thing I could find on eBay was Bank Negara Malaysia's policy for making online payment outside of Malaysia and Jabatan Kastam dan Eksais's list of taxable items brought in from other countries (let me tell you guys here and now that used items are not taxable if it is declared as such by the sender). But then again, everyone is trying to make a buck and they can say whatever the hell they want to say whistling.gif .

Last time I checked, my item is already in Malaysia (just not sure where blink.gif ). And I will soon be expecting a letter or note of some kind from the courier or post office that my item is impounded until further documents are produced. My question once again, has anyone been through this process? What do you have to do to get your package? How much in total do we have to spend (in terms of tax for buying a used item and a stupid permit from SIRIM for a used item)? Can the application be done by a 3rd party rather than having to go all the way to Shah Alam to do it by myself?

Whatever your responses maybe... I thank thee for thy time smile.gif .

After reading the post from members dating all the way back to March 2008... it seems this SIRIM thing is unavoidable hmm.gif . Oh well, might as well play along with it since the thing has already been paid for and its already in Malaysia. Expensive? Not worth it? Bo hua? Apa boleh buat, nasi sudah jadi bubur... just makan lor mega_shok.gif . Lets see how it all goes. If I have to go through the SIRIM hassle, be rest assured that you guys will get a good walkthrough on the proper steps to take if you plan on getting an iPhone on eBay or just about any auction webbie out there.

Thanks g3n0c|d3 for linking the post. I must have missed it out when I went through it earlier.
