QUOTE(Duke Red @ Jan 21 2010, 05:51 PM)
On the issue of players being played frequently, all I have to say is that it isn't a good excuse for not playing well. If anything, players who play often should be playing better than players who are used sparringly, hence the practice of playing players to form. Let us not forget that we haven't actually had a packed schedule of late what with European matches only resuming next month, and us not being in the League Cup. We use more players these days than we did in the past so how did players back then maintain their form? Is football more physically demanding now? It can be said that it's faster these days however in the past, it was more physical. Try going shoulder to shoulder with Duncan Ferguson a whole game and see how drained you end up. Players in the past were also less fit as diet regiments weren't as advanced and neither were training programmes.

*
Yup, I keep on wonder how come old days like 70-90's, there is no such or little issue of players overplayed, play too much, burn out etc issue. But now, even play once every week, burn out issue coming out.

Do remember as well, old days, boots are more heavily, less sophiscated, pitch is worsen than nowadays. Not to mention, there is no such thing of diet, nutrient specialist to take care of players health as well and medical also less advance. But yet modern football, we see more injuries to players compared to the past.

New generation less tough than old generation??
May be like in working field that I had experience, I do find newer generation is less tough than old generation be it physically or mentality. I do not know.

To Dukered, the game back then was more physical, but the modern game is more pacy and certainly more taxing in terms of stamina. I'm not a sportsman myself but correct me if I'm wrong stamina is only recovered from proper rest. Surely 300 minutes of football a week allows Lucas to dip slightly in form eh? At any rate, he still was working his socks off to win balls back.
Not disputing that the game is played at a faster pace these days but I wish to reiterate that players these days are fitter. No more boozing after games into the wee hours of the morning, healthier diets. Don't imagine it was easy for pudgy players like Neil Ruddock to play week in, week out back then. I do agree that it's best to give players a break but our schedule this season hasn't been all that taxing. I made no reference to any particular player in my earlier post. Just questioning whether or not a loss in form can be attributed to playing consistently when you don't have a packed schedule, and you aren't required to run the length of the pitch each game like Gerrard did earlier in his career.

Added on January 22, 2010, 8:57 amSammy Lee has dedicated the 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to the club's loyal supporters who he feels inspired the team to a crucial victory.

When the team coach arrived in Anfield Road ahead of kick-off the players and staff on board were greeted by hundreds of passionate Kopites - and the Reds' assistant boss admitted the players were touched by their show of support.

"Every three points is crucial but considering what has been happening this week in the build up to the game this was massive," Lee told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Everyone realised that, the staff, the players and all the supporters and everyone involved in the football club.

"There is not enough praise for our supporters. To see them showing their support when we arrived was massive. We try to intregrate our supporters into everything we do because they are part of what we are doing.

"It was really emotional for us to see them singing and supporting us as always. The players certainly appreciated it. Pepe Reina came up to me in the dressing room and he was very emotional. He said this wouldn't happen at any other football club and it meant a lot to everybody.

"We had a difficult game away to Stoke last weekend and the support for us was phenomenal. They saw the effort the lads put in and it was the same against Tottenham.

"Everybody played their part in this victory."

You guys have a point, quite baffling actually considering back then players were running back and forth of the pitch.

Perhaps the supposingly increased training regimes of modern day football is more taxing and by pushing footballers to the max, you're risking injuries? Though, it could be that players indeed are weaker these days. Well I'm from that generation so maybe I can testify to that. laugh.gif

Anyway, now that the team has gotten back some of the determination, it's time for Rafa to bring the team back to the next level. As somebody mentioned earlier, the team hasn't gelled with Aquilani yet and with Rodriguez and Riera in the squad, we need to start initiating some pass and move. Off the ball movement, clever use of space etc... The general game play against Spurs was very poor - Less hoof but still poor distribution, balls given away by Lucas and Aquilani, and almost zero threat until the last quarter of the match. Make no mistake about it, it was all about determination that gave us the win but we need to build on that and restore to the level that they know they could. What better way to do it than against bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Would love to see this lineup:

Reina
Darby/Degen-Carra-Agger/Skrtel-Insua
Masch
Lucas-Aquilani
Rodriguez-Kuyt-Riera

Pepe Reina is definitely one of the best around...i think in terms of his reflex saves he's the best.....but we havnt seen him do the 'van der sar's' fullstretch saves as often....perhaps he's quicker on his feet n thats why he doesnt need those super full stretch stuff....

and on top of that...i think he's got the best touch and is the most confident keeper on the ball.....in the whole of EPL

reina should just clear the ball rather than control it which thanks 2 our luck it was disallowed, other than he was solid

Liverpool starlet Mikel San Jose is set to join Athletic Bilbao on a permanent deal. The midfielder joined Liverpool from Bilbao in 2007 and played two seasons in the reserves before being loaned back to Bilbao in August last year.

San Jose, 20, has impressed during his time back in Bilbao and is eager to return full time. He wants a four-year contract but will cost around £2.5m.

Skrtel played the ball to Reina instead of clearing it away.So blame Skrtel!

*P.S, was it skrtel? I remember someone passing the ball to reina instead of clearing it far away....something like that
