Yup, I keep on wonder how come old days like 70-90's, there is no such or little issue of players overplayed, play too much, burn out etc issue. But now, even play once every week, burn out issue coming out.
Do remember as well, old days, boots are more heavily, less sophiscated, pitch is worsen than nowadays. Not to mention, there is no such thing of diet, nutrient specialist to take care of players health as well and medical also less advance. But yet modern football, we see more injuries to players compared to the past.
New generation less tough than old generation??
May be like in working field that I had experience, I do find newer generation is less tough than old generation be it physically or mentality. I do not know.

Not disputing that the game is played at a faster pace these days but I wish to reiterate that players these days are fitter. No more boozing after games into the wee hours of the morning, healthier diets. Don't imagine it was easy for pudgy players like Neil Ruddock to play week in, week out back then. I do agree that it's best to give players a break but our schedule this season hasn't been all that taxing. I made no reference to any particular player in my earlier post. Just questioning whether or not a loss in form can be attributed to playing consistently when you don't have a packed schedule, and you aren't required to run the length of the pitch each game like Gerrard did earlier in his career.
You guys have a point, quite baffling actually considering back then players were running back and forth of the pitch.
Perhaps the supposingly increased training regimes of modern day football is more taxing and by pushing footballers to the max, you're risking injuries? Though, it could be that players indeed are weaker these days. Well I'm from that generation so maybe I can testify to that.
Anyway, now that the team has gotten back some of the determination, it's time for Rafa to bring the team back to the next level. As somebody mentioned earlier, the team hasn't gelled with Aquilani yet and with Rodriguez and Riera in the squad, we need to start initiating some pass and move. Off the ball movement, clever use of space etc... The general game play against Spurs was very poor - Less hoof but still poor distribution, balls given away by Lucas and Aquilani, and almost zero threat until the last quarter of the match. Make no mistake about it, it was all about determination that gave us the win but we need to build on that and restore to the level that they know they could. What better way to do it than against bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Would love to see this lineup:
Reina
Darby/Degen-Carra-Agger/Skrtel-Insua
Masch
Lucas-Aquilani
Rodriguez-Kuyt-Riera
