The problem is, unpredictable stories are not received well by the general public. Mulholland Drive, Donnie Darko, The Machinist, and The Usual Suspects are not exactly box-office giants but are hailed for their off-the-wall plotlines.
@string - I don't think its that unpredictable stories aren't well received; just that most unpredictable films don't get much hype and as a result, don't get much customers, other than the hardcore movie buffs

it's the same everywhere...many ppl would just like to see a simple yet good story after a hard days work. These ppl don't want to bust their brains to understand the plot and at the same time they don't want it to be depressing either.
