1. Theorically, splitting will work if the TV, HT AVR and decoder are in same room. Magic word here is that the splitter, TV and AVR must support HDCP.
Why would you want to do that, tho? Most people just connect their TV to AVR HDMI out and byond to one of the AVR's HDMI In (let the AVR double as a HDMI switch) or connect HDMI to TV and SPDIF coaxial to AVR.
2. no, TV won't have sound if you send DD5.1 signal through HDMI and TV doesn't have DD support. This is already very clearly outlined in Astro byond v2 thread.
