Just wanna ask out of curiosity,
based on the question stated.
If someone ask for you acc no for winning a prize or through a survey.

Will you give the acc no? Y/N

Will they possibly hack your account by just giving the no or your acc will be harmed? Why?

Some forumer name yykoay86 was going through a survey with me,
after going through the survey. The person said I got rm20 for that and ask me whether I prefer to go to the office or give bank acc no so they can do bank transfer.

So is my account still protected if my acc no is leaked?

Please help thanks.

(NOTE: CURRENTLY MY ACC IS UNHARMED AND THE PERSON CALLED UP AFTER WORKING HOURS. SO I AM NOT SURE UNTIL THE NEXT WORKING DAY,THAT IS TOMORROW!) unsure.gif

I think there are no harm to give other people your bank account number, otherwise how other people bank in money for you?

People can only withdraw money from your account if they got hold of your IC and bank book and happen to have the same thumb print as you.

If you only gv them ur bank acc no shouldn't b a prob, jus don disclose the password. I think if you only gv the bank acc no and ur acc got hacked or smth the bank will refund u the money coz it's considered as their own security prob.

It's dangerous in Europe and America, but not in Malaysia. Over here, it's much harder for those scams to work, because the banks here insists on seeing your IC. They' don't have ICs over there.

But if they ask for your name, bank account number, ic number, address. Then later phone up and ask for more info like mother's maiden name, atm card number, when was your last transaction, etc. I will start to worry a little, but I still can't think of how they can get money out of your account.

TS, if you think RM20 is worth to get and wanna take risk... then give la...

For me, I won't do that...

If you know the tactic done by some SMS scam.. then don't give... they only ask for account number... next day money gone...

My friend recieve a SMS say won RM50000, he call, they only ask for account number.... that's all... but my friend know the trick so he just give random number.

Im sorry, i usually stay away and laugh my head off seeing discussions on the thread but some of the answers here are so ridiculous that I feel the need to clear the air out for a better understanding. First off, to the fact of giving out bank account numbers, here in Malaysia, go ahead. Like some of the better answers in this thread, if not how would you get money transfered over to you ? Thats the simplest rule of thumb. There is no danger in revealing your account number (yes, there's some complicated scams going on like using bank numbers of someone whilst obtaining payment from another method, but lets not get ahead of ourself here and focus). The simple truth is, in online dealing, there is absolutely no danger in revealing your account number. Full stop.

Next, the 'orang dalam' theory. Oh please, if its 'orang dalam' why in the world would ANYONE want to ask for your account number? Got 'Orang Dalam' means you get to see the account number right ? Duh! They would know how much you have, how much you transfered in, transfered out, how much cash you have, your IC, your name, your address, so WHY is it that this 'orang dalam' theory is still in play ? See the absurdity of that answer ?

It actually boils down to common sense my friend. This survey, youve been through, ive been through several of which some pays and some dont, all through bank accounts given to them over the phone but there is no danger of your account being hacked. If it was that easy to hack an account I'd have better things to do right now than reply on this thread. For your safety, yes follow some of the better tips given by some of the folks here for personal information that should or could be given over the phone :

1. Giving your name and bank account number is fine and good. No danger there.
2. Giving your IC number ? Well, id caution that.
3. Giving your mothers maiden name ? Depending on situation, if YOU called for a bank loan then it should be okay, if you got a call, they should already know. Caution on this part.
4. Your address ? Well your choice, depending on how dubious the call is you might not wanna give that information.
5. Credit Card Number ? If someone calls you out of the blue, the its a big NO NO. If you called to buy something, or to reserve a hotel room, then yes of course you should give that too.
6. CVP Number on Credit Card and Expiry Date ? See answer 5.
7. ATM Card Number ? There is only one possible reason to get your ATM Card Number. If you were using one of those Debit ATM Cards. Of which yes it may then be used to make a duplicate copy of your card. So in all cases ATM Card Number shouldnt be given out, heck even if you called the banks they would ask for your Account Number rather than ATM Card number most of the time.

Finally when in doubt, dont give in to temptation. Lets say you got a call that you won RM20K. No company will just deposit that amount into your account, you gotta sign something for it, because ANY responsible company will have to handle press, income tax, internal audit and all the mumbo jumbo just because they are giving out RM20K of the companies money to an unknown person, so just cuz you won something and they WANT to deposit the money into your account is already not so clever. And even you do give your account number to them, unless they have all those + your IC + your signature + your face, id say youd be pretty safe.

Lastly though, id have to say this again, the 'orang dalam' theory, is really, REALLY...not clever.

As others have mentioned, its safe to give your account number to someone else. Those online traders like here in lyn trading forum, they have to give out their account number to do business, some even readily post their account number at their threads.

You can go have a look around here if you remains unconvinced tongue.gif

Scammers involves other tactics, their aim is not your account number, although their process may at first involve that to make things look genuine. But there's nothing a person can do with your account number alone

Again, I like to stress that online trades are giving away their account number to public here at lyn, go have a look for yourself.

If they can hack your account, those trades would have all be robbed by now, don't you think so?

If you want to scam someone, you cannot immediately ask them to bank in money to you, no one will trust you.

Just like those nigeria email scam, they always start off by saying they want you to help transfer money, they want to bank in the money to your account first, and so on. Well, they can't do anything with your account number, but that's the opening act to absorb you into it, to make you believe what they want you to believe.

Nigerian scam always ends with the victim having to bank in a certain money to them first... Ironically, its the victim that gets the bank account number of the scammer to bank in those money in the end. But either side can't do anything with a account number except putting money into it. smile.gif

There are many form of scamming out there, but they always result in the victim voluntarily give money to the cheater. Not the victim bank account being hacked or anything like that

Don't be so naive laa.. Yes they can't withdraw using just your account number. But it can be use for verification purposes.

Somebody call you.. Saying.. "Are you Mr so and so, account number bla, bla bla ".. Right away your brain think that this somebody is genuine right..
(Because they already have for private info)

So after that you'll bogel everything.. That's how it works.. Like Macau scam.. How can they trick people to transfer money to them so easily..
They must already have some P&C information of the victim that makes him/her to trust them..

So don't simply give you personal data.
