QUOTE(Osphotic @ Jan 5 2010, 11:26 PM)
Just wanna ask out of curiosity,
based on the question stated.
If someone ask for you acc no for winning a prize or through a survey.

Will you give the acc no? Y/N

Will they possibly hack your account by just giving the no or your acc will be harmed? Why?
Some forumer name yykoay86 was going through a survey with me,
after going through the survey. The person said I got rm20 for that and ask me whether I prefer to go to the office or give bank acc no so they can do bank transfer.

So is my account still protected if my acc no is leaked?

Please help thanks.

(NOTE: CURRENTLY MY ACC IS UNHARMED AND THE PERSON CALLED UP AFTER WORKING HOURS. SO I AM NOT SURE UNTIL THE NEXT WORKING DAY,THAT IS TOMORROW!) unsure.gif

Im sorry, i usually stay away and laugh my head off seeing discussions on the thread but some of the answers here are so ridiculous that I feel the need to clear the air out for a better understanding. First off, to the fact of giving out bank account numbers, here in Malaysia, go ahead. Like some of the better answers in this thread, if not how would you get money transfered over to you ? Thats the simplest rule of thumb. There is no danger in revealing your account number (yes, there's some complicated scams going on like using bank numbers of someone whilst obtaining payment from another method, but lets not get ahead of ourself here and focus). The simple truth is, in online dealing, there is absolutely no danger in revealing your account number. Full stop.

Next, the 'orang dalam' theory. Oh please, if its 'orang dalam' why in the world would ANYONE want to ask for your account number? Got 'Orang Dalam' means you get to see the account number right ? Duh! They would know how much you have, how much you transfered in, transfered out, how much cash you have, your IC, your name, your address, so WHY is it that this 'orang dalam' theory is still in play ? See the absurdity of that answer ?

It actually boils down to common sense my friend. This survey, youve been through, ive been through several of which some pays and some dont, all through bank accounts given to them over the phone but there is no danger of your account being hacked. If it was that easy to hack an account I'd have better things to do right now than reply on this thread. For your safety, yes follow some of the better tips given by some of the folks here for personal information that should or could be given over the phone :

1. Giving your name and bank account number is fine and good. No danger there.
2. Giving your IC number ? Well, id caution that.
3. Giving your mothers maiden name ? Depending on situation, if YOU called for a bank loan then it should be okay, if you got a call, they should already know. Caution on this part.
4. Your address ? Well your choice, depending on how dubious the call is you might not wanna give that information.
5. Credit Card Number ? If someone calls you out of the blue, the its a big NO NO. If you called to buy something, or to reserve a hotel room, then yes of course you should give that too.
6. CVP Number on Credit Card and Expiry Date ? See answer 5.
7. ATM Card Number ? There is only one possible reason to get your ATM Card Number. If you were using one of those Debit ATM Cards. Of which yes it may then be used to make a duplicate copy of your card. So in all cases ATM Card Number shouldnt be given out, heck even if you called the banks they would ask for your Account Number rather than ATM Card number most of the time.

Finally when in doubt, dont give in to temptation. Lets say you got a call that you won RM20K. No company will just deposit that amount into your account, you gotta sign something for it, because ANY responsible company will have to handle press, income tax, internal audit and all the mumbo jumbo just because they are giving out RM20K of the companies money to an unknown person, so just cuz you won something and they WANT to deposit the money into your account is already not so clever. And even you do give your account number to them, unless they have all those + your IC + your signature + your face, id say youd be pretty safe.

Lastly though, id have to say this again, the 'orang dalam' theory, is really, REALLY...not clever.
