Of which pretty much defeats the multi orientation capabilities of the device already. Besides, ever thought of what happens when you need to fit more than 1 person into a video chat session on a screen with portrait orientation? squeeze squeeze squeeze (on the human side)
tried using the iPod nano with the camera? Sure, nobody would want to block the lens on purpose, but the form factor does cause this to happen a lot by accident to the point that it gets annoying.
if a mobile phone's video call works just fine...why cant this? just make it permanent portrait mode since it is the best option. they are things that dont need multi orientation..imagine what the person on the other end will see if u keep flipping around. tried using the iPod nano with the camera? about blocking the lens...if u are holding the sides and the camera is on top, how do u block it?

1024 x 768 is XGA, ratio 4:3 ( i think you know that)
so if you gonna play HD (16:9) video, there is definitely black bar at top and bottom
some movies (quite alot) are in 21:9; so that's the full screen you cant get, without missing the content at both end.
if there are iMax then i would be different case
H.264 codec is more important here.
that's why movie are so great in iPad and ipods/iphone.
you still don't understand the meant of mobile os performance. OpenGL is never big deal now for computer OS, but it's quite for mobile OS.
to start things of, picking 4:3 ratio as display is not a wise choice as you have said, most movies are 16:9 and some 21:9so if you gonna play HD (16:9) video, there is definitely black bar at top and bottom

i know h264 is quite common today but what puzzles me is the mpeg4 playback at only 640x480. bear in mind here that from the beginning, im not trying to point out picture quality. instead, im talking about the processing limitation of the A4 which is something for us to ponder at.
the bottom line is, you are still getting a mobile device performance on a not so mobile product. when you put the price into context as well and weigh it against available products, it is an even larger turn off.
