The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.

user posted image user posted image

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury

user posted image user posted image user posted image

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

Some random picks from previous thread on our last match review:

QUOTE(StarGhazzer @ Dec 31 2009, 07:38 AM)
I don't think anyone, be it Arsenal fan or not, will deny that Vermy has been the best buy so far.

I can accept the others, but not Glen Johnson. I must admit that I haven't been focusing on him or Liverpool too much, but put aside the nightmare he had against us I don't think he's done any better than Bak. One look at the 18M price tag and he's totally not worth it. Maybe he's just one of the better performing players in Rafa's team and hence got the nod in the list.

Kranjcar on the other hand is pretty impressive and I don't deny that at one stage I actually wanted him to come. But seriously we don't have any place for him in the team. Darren Bent is a surprise after being a dud for T'ham - maybe he is actually a good striker after all, it's just that T'ham didn't know how to use him correctly.
Nope we weren't playing 451, it's still a 433 only with Nasri dropping fairly deep at times while Song and Rambo charged forward quite a lot.

Lazy to do a full review this morning... actually there's nothing much to say either. We outplayed Pompey all the time and they never seemed capable to turn the game around. Without Fabs there's still not enough ammunition that reaches the box but the movement of our three midfielders were absolutely superb. It's probably the first league game which I'm fully impressed with Rambo and didn't find any faults with his game, and if he keeps this up we'll be safe once Song leaves for ACN. Speaking of which, congrats to Song who got a goal. It has been long overdue.

One thing worth mentioning - Andy was appalling this morning compared to what we know he can (and should) do. As expected he was outmuscled by Pompey's defenders but his movement and passes were totally off. Compare that to Dudu who roamed everywhere. Dudu's touch may still be rusty but his runs and passing are improving match by match and even though the goal was a deflection it'll still add to his confidence.

QUOTE(kimhoong @ Dec 31 2009, 08:54 AM)
I am also impressed by Ramsey's performance. He hasn't show much impact in his other matches before this and I was about to rate him lowly before this match.

Diaby is also worth mentioning. He has really turned into someone who we can rely on in the midfield. He is releasing ball much sooner and his positioning is good

Song has been Song as always. Having him to score is the last gift and confidence for him before heading for ACN. All the best to him and Cameroon.

Well, our three-man midfield has been very outstanding to my standard.

Other players such as Nasri and Eduardo at attack, Sagna on his tireless runs and crosses and Verm+Gallas great defense are all good biggrin.gif

Some let-downs players would be Arshavin... and Almunia in the goal conceded. The angle has been tight from Portsmouth players on the side, yet Almunia stayed at the edge of post and had little time to recover to middle position when the goal was scored. I know that even if he is at the middle, the goal might not be saved but at least, his positioning can be improved.... sorry for being picky but it's just a sharing for better improvement.

All in all, it has been a good game and a good month to all of us after some shitty November.... I like what Quick`mentioned:

Next, it's Arsenal vs 2010 rclxm9.gif

QUOTE(jam_lennon @ Dec 31 2009, 09:45 AM)
start watching not more than 3 mins then ramsey bang in his goal
that goal really piece of skill+luck+determine

when he steal the ball, there is a glimpse in my mind, then ramsey is facing gk but he didn't shoot maybe due to distance, he stepover the defender from left then swing his left foot, bang!!! goaaalllllllllllllllllll!! seriously, not much space left for him to shot

QUOTE(RyanAtwood @ Dec 31 2009, 10:17 AM)
woohooo...this is a great performance from our gunners....let's keep the momentum going....n the captain is going to be injured for 10 days...yeay!!! rclxms.gif i mati2 thought he was going to be injured for 3 weeks...this is really good news...n our other midfielders have been doing their job pretty well  rclxm9.gif ....no need to rush fabs so soon....juz let him heal properly nod.gif ....next game is a fa cup match against west ham!i think we should do well in cup matches too as this team has been playing with a high confidence for the past month....but the important thing is to take one game at a time... thumbup.gif

BTW Happy New Year to all gunners fans in lowyat!!!!be safe 2nite....dun drink n drive...make sure u have a designated driver n mayb get lucky wif some gurls  laugh.gif ....this message is brought to u by RyanAtwood! biggrin.gif  tongue.gif

Song is only required to go off on the 4th. We have a game on the 3rd against West Ham. So he can still play one more for Arsenal

Memory lane, I just finish watching all the goal compilation of Henry goal, which contain his goals since the Overmars period, till the Invincible era, and also till Fabregas period, almost bring tears to me. Seeing all those goals and remembering the time he was still in the team, man those was the time, not that I'm saying our current team don't score beautiful goals, but still cant compare with even half of Henry effort it seem.

No matter it penalty, or freekicks, it seem Henry always add some spice into it, specially his freekick, if I did not watch the video compilation, I would have forgotten that Henry can also take very good freekick.

But 1 thing I do realize, during his time with Arsenal, during the Overmars period, till the Pires period, when he score a goal, he would celebrate with his teammates by hugging or such and such, but during the Young Guns period where Fabs, Hleb and Adebayor is around, it seem he did not celebrate much anymore, just some simple high five and such, maybe that time he already outgrew the club, never would have notice it if I did not watch the video compilation.

Anyway, great game today morning, I see us controlling the game for most of the time, great teamwork, and Song really know how to do his defensive duties, guess we going to miss his presence when he leave for his international tournament duties.

Good result from the lads. Didn't see the game, but I would think it was a cracker!

Anyway, AW started his usual "we don't need players" thing again after the win. However, earlier reports did quote him saying he needs to bring in some new faces.

Whatever happens, here's who I'd like to see coming in.

Wish List
1. Edin Dzeko
Although he's been playing with a strike partner at Wolfburg, he looks more than capable of occupying the lone-striker position that we employ this season. Our strikeforce without RVP looks a bit short of confidence while Bendtner may take some time to get back to full fitness. Strong, good in the air, quick with lethal finishing, Dzeko would be my ideal striker for the team.

2. Scott Parker
What? Why him?? He's overrated (I can anticipate some of your comments wink.gif). But hear me out... Sure he's never made it at Chelsea, but he had world class competition in Makalele back then. He adds a lot of steel in the middle of the park, his passing isn't too bad either and his tackles are robust indeed (just ask Jimmy Bullard). At 29-30, this would not be the typical AW signing, but his experience may be invaluable in our young midfield. It also helps that he's the ultimate professional with barely a whinge or complaint throughout his career.

Realistic List
1. Maroune Chamakh
While he's already said he doesn't want to leave Bordeaux, I find it hard to believe that the club wouldn't want to cash in on him before his contract expires in 6 months. We also saw last January that anything can happen in the transfer window and we should never say never. I personally haven't seen him play before, but AW seems to covet him. Franny Jeffers aside, AW's track record for forwards has been spot on for the past decade so I trust his judgement.

2. Some unknown kid from Africa...
.... Who will probably be a bundle of nerves and fans will start calling for his head before settling down in 4-5 years' time and perform like a potential world-class midfielder.... Why does this feel so familiar...

He probably wants to leave under free transfer . Is he really good? I never got a chance to see him or dzeko played before .
I wonder who scored free kick the most for arsenal , was it Henry ? Or someone else?
And please add me in the gooner list as well.

i have 1 question. When in direct FK, why i cant see any player defending the goal post except the GK? Is it easy to defend if they put more player at the goal post or goal line to defend? Is this move illegal?

no it's not illegal but if a player is at the goal post, the free kick could be easily directed to someone else to score because there won't be any offsides.

yups id can't agree more with this transfer wishlist. And regarding scott parker..erm he maybe not dat good at chelsea but he's
one of the key midfielder along with matt holland during charlton days. And its a dream come true if we can get dzeko. If u watch
when he scored both time against united this season...there's no doubt he know where & how to score. And when u have the clever
finisher combined with great provider like nasri,fab,arsh..then he could scoring goal for fun biggrin.gif

As for chamakh...i don't see any chances we're gonna bring him this january. His team in fiery form right now(top at Ligue 1 summit)
and make a short work out of bayern & juve and collect most points than any team during group stage. Bordeaux could truly be
the real darkhorse in this year UCL.
