Have you guys seen the new Sony Time 2010 promotion? I'm interested in this ad:

Attached Image

Does anybody know whether the 550 comes with lens or body only?

The 380 looks attractive at RM2599 with twin lens kit.

What do you guys think regarding this offer? Good?

I'm having a hard time deciding on whether to get the 380/550 or Canon 500D........ rclxub.gif (How's the price in KL?)

Note : I have no experience with DSLR but want to get a basic one. Sony DSLR looks more attractive to me as it has a good live view (I want to use the DSLR mainly for it's excellent point and shoot!!!! doh.gif)

if i remember correctly, general cleaning for sony dslr is FOC....

Added on January 12, 2010, 9:41 pm

depends on your budget tongue.gif i think the a550 does not come with any lens. u should try to ask from shops other than sony style. they usually will ahve cheaper price, last checked from garage sales, zaloon studio selling a550 body for rm2600 only.
*
Yeah, if I were in KL, would have bought from our LYN forumers who gives such a good price for those cameras. I'm in Sibu so it is a bit of a problem as I want to COD only.

QUOTE(lugiamcg @ Jan 12 2010, 09:44 PM)
I read some reviews on those 2 models few days back...the only main factor that u should consider is that the a380 uses a normal CCD whereas the a550 uses ExmorR cmos. With exmor, u'll get a faster fps ie:faster speed, during burst and also, it should future prove for quite sometime =D Btw, im saving for that 550  drool.gif
*
Yeah, I'm also thinking of the alpha 550 or canon 500D rather than the 380. Just that the promotion for the 380 with dual-lens kit looks attractive.....

I'm not a pro in DSLR and just want a better camera compared to my compact digital camera. I think the sony models suit me better due to the various "beginner" functions like excellent live view, steady shot, etc.....

QUOTE(destfull @ Jan 12 2010, 09:57 PM)
I think it is if you bought at normal shop

RM2650 + RM530 = RM3180

compare to RM2999 plus 300 = RM3299
*
Really? Thx for the info. Wished I was in KL!!! cry.gif

I went to one camera shop looking for Sony alpha 550 and the shop says that sony DSLR not that good because it is difficult to get the parts for repair and the accessories are difficult to find too (as compared to Nikon & Canon). Is that true? hmm.gif

kmarc: Not true, Sony service is pretty good. If anything you can say there are more delays getting your stuff back from Nikon (I had a Coolpix 2200 sit with them over a year, and a common problem with the SB-600 is the flash head - one SB-600 was with Nikon for almost a year. And my SB-28 never got its battery cover.)
*
Cool. Just what I wanted to hear as I already made up my mind to get the 550. Will be joining you guys sometime in the near future! rclxms.gif

i think its still new in msia.
using A550 myself.

couldn get the lcd covers. haven arrived.
or mayb u can check at KLCC.
I see. You mean it's because the 550 is new that's why the accessories are less? I thought they are interchangeable between the alpha models.....

Just wondering, how's the 550 when shooting under incandescent (fluorescent) light at night in the house (without flash)? hmm.gif

So sad. I went to the Sony Centre here in Sibu to ask about the alpha 550 promotion. Apparently, the Sony Time 2010 promotion that starts on 8th Jan 2010 hasn't reach Sibu yet!!! The guy said he hasn't heard of any new promotions. rclxub.gif

QUOTE(albnok @ Jan 14 2010, 01:09 AM)

kmarc: In flourescent light, you will want to use a slower shutter speed (at least 1/50s) to get even lighting - flourescent light flickers 50 times a second. AWB with flourescent light generally looks okay but if you're not sure, use the Flourescent WB or set the temperature in Kelvin WB while using Live View to get a very accurate WB.

*
Thx for the tip. However, I want to take my 1+ year old baby who will NOT pose for me. She will probably be moving here and there. Are there any special settings for this? Slower shutter speed won't be able to get a good picture in this situation right? (Especially under flourescent light).

Yeah, thinking of getting one. However, flash looks so unnatural but I think there are techniques to get around this right? Bounce flash or something. Have to read up more on this.....

yea..sometimes direct flash might make ur shots unnatural..but u can always bounce it..or use gel to blend into ur ambient lighting..
i shoot my cousins' children pretty often but night time isnt my fav time..lol..i usually shoot them in the mornin/afternoon..

Alamak! "Flash gel" - another new word for me. blink.gif

Trying to shoot kids indoors WITHOUT a Flash and at Low ISO is a futile effort. You're gonna need either the Flash (bounce, not direct) or high ISO. Which could be ISO 800+
*
That's why I plan to get the 550. My compact camera is just awful when it comes to this......

QUOTE(albnok @ Jan 14 2010, 03:27 PM)
Uzumaki NaruTo: Comes with certain Alpha models sold at Sony Style outlets.

kmarc: Actually it should be fine lah. Just that flourescent light flickers so don't expect consistent color and light at faster shutter speeds. A bright prime lens would be best, e.g. 50mm F1.8 DT SAM on a budget.

Tips you can learn from Nigel Barker of America's Next Top Model:

In another video of him teaching how to shoot pets, he suggests the photographer get behind the shoulder of the pet owner. So the pet owner plays with the pet while you shoot from behind the shoulder - probably this would work for babies as well?

cplow1: Exactly! Though you know lah for the people here who think they need to have every focal length covered...
*
Cool. The 550 promotion is supposed to come with the SAL50F18 for RM300. that's the one you're referring to right?

Actually compact cameras are OK, just that while typically they can adjust their Flash intensity well enough the cycle time between shots is a bit slow for baby photos. That was why i bought my first DSLR last time.

If you're in doors and you don't plain to shoot in Potrait orientation much, you can get a F20AM flash and use the money for a better lens, a 50MM is quite close if you're indoors and trying to get pictures of your baby doing things.

I'd suggest the 18250 for the first time user that needs a lens. wink.gif But I guess if you just need to try your hand at taking pics first, trying to find the new 1855 kit lens also can lar.
*
I don't use flash as I dislike the normal flash photography using compact camera. However, under fluorescent light, no flash with high iso is really terrible, not to mention blurred pictures....

Yeah, I'd probably get the F20AM for some bounce flash.........

As for lens, please don't poison me! tongue.gif I plan start off with the SAL50F18 first. Poison me next time..... laugh.gif

Edit : For those from Sibu, I just spot another Sony dealer opening shop today from newspaper advertisement. At the bus terminal. 14-17 promotion day. Hope they sell the 550!!!! rclxm9.gif

Personally I feel that a person shouldn't only have a fixed length lens if they're just learning photography, but that's just me. tongue.gif

Also.. I'm telling you to get the KIT lens 1855. No poison there, it's just that the A550 doesn't have a lens with it, so I was thinking that should be best for you to learn with.

18250.. ok.. that's abit special lar.
*
Aikes! I am chatting with our forumer ieR and found out that the SAL50F1.8 cannot take group photo! sweat.gif

Hehe, the reason I chose the SAL50F1.8 was because it comes with the camera at a promotional price of RM300 (which I think is a good deal). If I get the Kit lens 1855, then I would have to add more money...... sweat.gif

QUOTE(marauderz @ Jan 14 2010, 11:46 PM)
Because you found out what you need to use it for. And you're carrying 3 lenses?!?!

kmarc sounds like a father who first time want to experiment with a DSLR camera to take pictures of his kid. So he doesn't really know what all the range numbers means, therefore b4 he commits to a fixed length think he should use a variable length first.

And of course, personally I find a 50mm way too tele to take my son's action shots. I can't stand 5 meters away from him all the time to take photos tongue.gif
*
Erm, is that true? You have to stand so far to take potrait shots? hmm.gif That's not good leh.

Anyway, what would you recommend? Take the SAL50F1.8 since it is cheap at RM300 (I assume it is cheap?) and buy another 1855 or just forget about the SAL50F1.8 and get a kit lens instead.

Which kit lens should I start off first? hmm.gif
