HDMI supports HDCP (Another form of DRM). Component does not.
HDCP is supposed to 'prevent' pirating of stuff. (History shows us that all protection is eventually circumvented by smart people!)
HD content providers are terrified of 'unprotected' content.
So, Astro turns off HD over component to 'appease' the HD content providers.
Even at the cost of denying HD to those with no HDMI inputs on their TV!
(Too bad for early adopters of HDTV with no HDMI inputs!)
You made the point, with those with old HD sets with no HDMI try to get one cos using component is not advisable, the picture not good and sound very low. Only HDMI works very well. I even tried HDMI to Component cable it doesnt work. Finally I put the old RM4000 2005 year HD ready tv into the room, used composite to connect Astro HDCP is supposed to 'prevent' pirating of stuff.
