As for me, I have 3 notebooks and no desktops. I mean, the only 3 computing devices I own personally, not family... So I don't forsee myself getting a desktop but I would get a desktop replacement like a m17x Or a possible newer model from Alienware which is 17" or above.

I feel you can build a M17x as a desktop replacement and I support the idea of being able to carry your desktop around and being more mobile. The only catch is that you will have to invest more to make a notebook a really good desktop replacement. Lets say you want the best GPU with SLI, you have to spend few K more to upgrade the standard single NVidia GTX 260M to either a Double 260M or a Double GTX 280M. And get a good processor and 4-6GB Ram with a good HD and you should be good to go.....

But if you're gonna spend on a M17x, Go all the way.... smile.gif

yea.. thats what im thinking in my mind...
is more portable compare to a gaming desktop 15kg above..

so, u getting all the notebook as replacement because of portable?
*
Yup. Thats the idea. End of the day. The notebook is not comparable to the high end desktop when it comes to performance, but I can live with that knowing I can bring my work around.
Like Screemo said, Maybe in the future, for me... when I settle down.... and buy my own house ..... Who knows? Mindset might change and I might get the desktop instead. But since I'm still mobile and always travelling.... Im sticking to my notebook. But every photographer would need a notebook anyway, So I forsee myself having a mobile system at least in the future as well..... icon_idea.gif

Anyone can recommend me AW laptop ? I need a light one , able to handle high graphic games . thanks alot

Alienware and the word 'Light' never mixes in the same sentence. Well, not until now at least, after the release of the 11" M11x there is now a lighter model to consider..... icon_rolleyes.gif

Im still waiting for a DESKTOP owner to give a review here.....

They're out there,.... but they haven't found our thread yet.... hmm.gif

Seems like the forum is quiet in the 'My Machine is acting up' segment.

Looks like things have stabilized.... well at least I hope it has....

Mines stable dy, and am Happy to report that.

I saw the Zalman cooler today at Lowyatt when I went shopping for my joypad. Didn't look so impressive to me the 2000 series and even less so the 1500 series.... but its pricey!!!!!

Damn I'm short on cash to buy the 920xm. I will not switch my gpu yet. Goin to wait for the gt300 series.
*
Lucky for you that you're in the Americas. You can make use of the Alienware upgrade policy ya?

Anyways, you already have a powerfull proc for the CPU, Better just wait for the GTX300 base GPU and change that, then later when u want the new 920XM i7 icon_rolleyes.gif

Im not too familiar with desktop specs. But gaming wise, with ur SLI on the M17x, is it better at games overall than ur desktop i7 920XM with the GTX 295? hmm.gif

Damn, I hope its untrue. Prolly they'll get updated instructions from HQ to make it available here. People are looking forward to this model. It would be stupid to say NO to them as there is a market here..... Plus I have already brainwashed some friends into considering this model... yIKES!

I manage to request for an upgrade/exchange the current M17x Q9000 for the new M17x-R2 i7-820QM. As long as it's within 14 days of goods received. Now have to wait for the Malaysia Dell to update their webpage so that I can reconfigure the laptop.

Cool. So you're ordered a M17x? Finally another member to the Big Daddy line....

The M17x is already available at Dell Malaysia site coupled with single ATI 1GB 4870 Card. There is no option for Nvidia Cards on this one.. Its like the Intel Quad and Duo Cores use the Nvidia and the I7 is packaged with Ati. rclxub.gif

QUOTE(Mr.Docter @ Jan 31 2010, 09:45 AM)
i did some pretty deep research about this comparison too, especially in term of the graphic card.
so far, the best performing mobility GPU in the world is Nvidia GTX 280M SLi. ATi Mobility 4870 CF is in second place and ATi 5870 is roughly in third place (some say GTX 260M SLi).

thats mean that if your budget is short for 280M SLi or 4870 CF, choose 5870 since its the best performing single GPU.

and if you thinking to CF the 5870, there is no news about that yet.

(please note that my aspects is about performance, not about temp or power consumption smile.gif)
*
I aGree with you Doc. We have to wait to see the new developement in Alienware GPU Options. This is like the transition period and may not be the best time to get ur set as they may be the GTX 300M Series options maybe in a month or twos time or a 5870 CF for the M17x. But its just my speculation and we'll have to wait and see..... its gonna be a GPU war again.... icon_rolleyes.gif

The EDGE Alienware has over its competitors is definetly looks as well. Who can deny that the AW does really look like a mean gaming rig with uber cool built in features and design? None, they'll just have to rely on their performance to edge AW and that too won't be for a long period as the Alien evolves.... flex.gif

p:s On a side note, I think our User list needs updating. I see new owners posting here.... WELCOME!!!! thumbup.gif

that means wie can choose to upgrade our gc to gtx300, if new alienware is built with gtx 300?
*
Well, thats when we customize upon purchasing lar, cos you know lar that at this current moment, they do not allow upgrades to diff specs after purchasing and receiving our units. Also, we are not sure if the current mobo supports the newer NVidia or Ati cards or not? So we shall wait for the announcements from NVidia first and see how Alienware includes these new cards into their systems.... hmm.gif

Guys!!! Seems like a horrible thing happened to my m15x...just now after playing mass effect for about three hours...it suddenly shut down by itself...poof!...check my plug...seems to be ok... But when i tried to on it back....nothing...list of thing that i did before the unfortunate incidents are as follows:
1.played mass effect
2.used zalman cooler nc2000
3.used asus xonar u1 usb sound card
4.connected via logitech 4 point usb hub
FYI the m15x is a virgin set meaning no overclocking watsoeva...haihz have to call dell to claim my complete cover tomorrow...sad night indeed...RIP my beast :-(
*
Sound like something tripped or maybe even malfunction in your Mobo. Overheating due to long gaming hours, but then you had a lappie cooler on as well. Hmmm.... did you have a program running to track your temperature?

For Mobo problems, I think my unit has been the one more giving problems in the past, but of course that is all rectified now ever since I got a new Mobo and GPU Card. I track my temp everytime my lappie is on now and see the highs and lows after every usage so I've gotten an idea how hot it goes so to not be alarmed. Also, I dun mind letting it get hotter since my unit is on the 3 years complete cover and service has been good by the technicians so far. And I've not had any problems with my unit eversince so Im happy.... Im using a CM Cooler which also acts as a 4usb hub ...and not a Zalman series cooler....

QUOTE(Insydious @ Feb 1 2010, 12:19 AM)
Oh boy.....another M15x problem.

Btw, playin ME2 rite? Lol juz finished it today.....friggin nice. Gonna start a 2nd playthrough soon.
*
ME2 Outs dy? Hmmm....

QUOTE(zad78 @ Feb 1 2010, 12:21 AM)
Yup i think there is no issues with temp since i'm using zalman's to cool it off expecting long hours of gaming session. It just went off suddenly...thought maybe it was a blackout but the light outside was on...hmmm if i called them tomorrow morning...will they come in later in the after noon or the day after....haihz thought alienware is the top of the line lappy....
*
If you all tomorrow, they will come the day after. But depending on the time you call, sometimes past a certain hour like evening they might only be able to send the technician to you in 2 days time. If you notify them regarding ur issue and its confirmed a Mobo issue, they will have to wait for parts so that will determine the date they will be able to service your unit. I have waited up to 4 days for them to gain new parts and come over due to logistical issues on their side.....

QUOTE(FindingScreemo @ Feb 1 2010, 12:26 AM)

Thinking of extending my warranty next year for this unforeseen circumstances...looking at the bright side though...luckily dell provide this excellent coverage...that is why i'm not feeling that sad coz i know dell would taken care of it quite well...

Yup, ease of mind and remember to insist on ON-SITE SERVICE...! thumbup.gif Sometimes they ask if they can take back ur unit for inspection.. icon_idea.gif
