Hmm, my dream equipment is just a decent tube amp. No need high end ones, a Bugera would do. Comfortable, big studio and no faulty equipment. It doesn't need to be super good or whatever, as long as everything's working. I'm sick of going to studios and rude staff, faulty staff and no parking.

I jam in Ipoh, and as the vocalist, I hope the microphone can be clean after every sessions. I hate it when I sing and have to smell other ppl's saliva.

Wouldn't comment much on the equipments as the studio I jam in is quite ok with the speakers and amps. Instruments are mostly brought by my own band. But the guitars, bass and drums are in tune would also be pleasing for ppl who don't have their own instruments. I was early for one of the jam sessions and i saw the shop owner tuning the guitars bass and drums. and also played a few guitar solos for me. lol. that's a good thing, no? tongue.gif

Other factors:
Good air ventilation with air-con and an extra one for the drummer is a big plus.
Nice and clean carpeted floor.
Comfy sofas and small tables for potential friends to watch a mini real mini gig.

talking about fav jam studio - my top fav is - Black Brown and Blues in sri hartamas.. their studio A!..

pergh equipment wise - JCM 2000 stack amp..! my fav amp.. that surely i couldn't afford to buy one..

studio should have quite a roomy area.. (like this studio A .. got sofa for friends and family to lepak there and be your audience. )

sound must be balance.. and vocal must be heard clearly - good monitoring system.

good keyboard.. and good quality drums.

I don't mind paying a bit more for a quality studio like that.. (that studio above - I pay around RM 30-40 per hour)

i used to jam in a studio at shamelin, stack guitar amps are nice although drums are a little cacat, and keyboards are old (Korg i3) but still usable nonetheless.

the best thing about this studio is you can blast off guitars and bass and drums, while the vocal mic will not feedback and can be heard clearly, it was a decent dynamic mic (shure i think). walls are treated very nicely, with those lubang lubang on the top layers, not sure what they are but seems like very expensive stuffs that used to appear in those older recording studios. guitar effects can be heard clearly even those subtle reverbs, it felt rather like a recording studio without sounding "dead". oh and the door is doubled too, like recording studios. it's pretty spacious too, with an old 2 seats sofa. you can have 5 people jamming and 5 audiences in there without feeling cramped.

i (we, the band share the fees) used to pay RM50 per hour for that studio, despite studio being old and the counter looks like it was running for 20 years already (or was it??), it was enjoyable and most importantly, reliable.

if you can come out with a jamming studio that guitar/bass/vocal/keyboard are as loud as the drums and still sound good and vocal without feedback, people will pay for that price. i played in a smaller jamming studio at sri hartamas, although they have a very nice marshall guitar amp and decent drums, the acoustic is horrible, room is small, everything doesn't sound nice.

lots of jamming studio overlooked the importance of acoustic treatment (which can be expensive, especially drums are difficult to sound nice no matter how expensive your drums are. it must sound dry and yet you cannot put everything to absorb the sound or else it'll sound dead. not even high end gears will sound good if acoustic treatment is bad.

AFAIK, I like Akarkarya at Damansara. Really good place with good equipment but then it's a little pricy. Apparently Shiela Majid has recorded there before so what'd you expect la. Besides that, I also jam at Epicenter at Sri Kembangan. It was new when I first went but I'm not sure about now. Good equipment. Most studios start out with good equipment but then after awhile all the Mats and Kapaks go in and the equipment gets overused. tongue.gif

Bitz Studio at Jalan Skudai, Johor Bahru. Near the toyota & proton dealer just before Danga Bay. Reasonable price, 25 per hour. Decent equipment. The owner rocks! I'm sure those from JB knows this studio.

I think every studio should AT least have a decent drumset... the others... At least lah... VERY least... halfstack amps... Or if low budget then 60 watts+ lahh... If got at least a decent budget I would suggest you get this smile.gif for one studio lah...

Attached Image
Tama Superstar... Can get for around 2.5k... VERy good for small spaces but EXTREMELY quality sound and comes with Remo drumheads..
The drum set has birch interior plies for power and great projection plus a basswood inner ply and a modern wrapped finish. The drum kit features die-cast hoops, the Star-Cast mounting system for increased resonance, minimum shell contact hi-tension lugs, die-cast claw hooks for bass drum, and new Quick-Set tilter hardware pack.

7-ply bass drum shell is composed of interior birch plies with basswood inner ply. 6-ply toms and snare are made of birch with basswood inner ply. Matched color wood bass drum hoops. Tom hoops are die-cast with the Tama Star-Cast Mount System for natural shell resonance. Tama Power Craft heads provide the finishing touch.

Attached Image
Sabian B8 Super Set cymbal pack includes the Sabian B8 cymbals: a pair of 14" hi-hats, 14" crash, 16" thin crash, 20" ride cymbal, a free 18" thin crash, and a free 10" splash. The B8 hi-hats have crisp and lively stick and pedal response and are very bright and definite, clean and penetrating. The B8 thin crash has a full, penetrating response, and is bright and loud, exploding with an upward pitch gain for maximum impact. The 20" ride has crisp stick definition, a cutting bell, and a bright tonal response blend to create a smooth, versatile ride. The free 10" splash accents with extremely fast, bright, and punchy high-end cut.
Can get for around 1k-ish... Very good cymbals for their price... tambah another 1k for stands smile.gif

And IF you can afford it... Can get for less than 1k...

Attached Image

Pearl Eliminator P2002C

To keep EVERYONE happy... The world's most umm... customizable pedal smile.gif

Okay...drums done...

For guitars second hand also can lahh... But must be quality... Go get something from gapnap/Clement

Amps I've said earlier liao...

EFFECTS. A lot of studios don't rent out effects...

Try getting at least the more common ones.. Like MT-2's, or TS9's.... distortion esp....

A sofa would be nice... With proper sound proofing and air-conditioning... Once I went to a studio in Ampang the guy downstairs asked us to keep quiet... CAUSE THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE FLOOR =_=' and it was HOOOOOT.

So yeah... looking forward to trying your place out biggrin.gif Keep us informed yeah?

And ALWAYS keep a few cheap drumsticks and strings... SURE got people break strings, don't bring drumsticks and all...

My 2 cents plus tax xD

i don't think it's shah studio, i went there a few times, and there ain't no holes in the floor, but the only thing i hate about that studio is that we have to climb 5 or 6 flight of stairs to get there.

the drums should at least have a double bass pedal and a good air ventilation system or air cond.
guitar wise, maybe a tube amp- half stack or a combo would be perfect.

one last thing, the staff should be friendly, warm and honest. when i mean honest, i mean they should not even have the notion of stealing a customer's misplaced handphone, like a particular studio in DU.

Flame Studio in Cheras,Alam Damai. Jammed there a few times. Instruments wise, acceptable. Dont expect high end one. Very warm and cosy atmosphere. Friendly staff. Price, coudn't remember, around RM25 or RM30 an hour. But can get extra time when there is no queue. There was one time we get extra 30 minutes.

For vocalist,Loud and clear is very important, cuz other band member can't follow if dunno where/ which part he/she is singing..(must be very loud)....

For bassist(I am), it's not user friendly if a bass guitar with it's strings too far away from the fret( hard to press)....for beginner lar(I am too)...so...u know.....

For a visitor,like.... a friend of the band, wanted to stay inside the jamming room,so.....kindly provide ear stopper(of whatever it is) not free ofcuz...and a slightly bigger room will do.....

for guitarist,provide effect pedal(not free also,depends on u)....

drummer idk....

hope it helps......

Hi you frequent jammers !

Want to ask, encountered any customers just walk into the studio just to audition/play the instruments (not playing songs etc) ? Something like "I just came to test out this amp with my guitar".. coz sometimes shops dont have that particular amp etc.
