I think big companies can't even acknowledge the existence of formats like MKV... esp Sony since they themselves own a movie studio

Sheesh...why do I get a nagging feel that Sony's Playstation became popular many moons ago cos of Jacksparrow games.
If no MKV why bother, or is it just for US and EU market?
At least now we know why Sony's people who design the Walkman lost out to iPod.

BTW it is about £60.00 Incl VAT rclxub.gif

when PS3 firmware update to support divx 7 is release we can play mkv directly on PS3, since divx 7 is using mkv format, now if they will add ntfs support, it think the hardware sale here will went through the roof biggrin.gif

there is even plan to release a 3D update for all PS3, that will be awesome if you have 3D tv.

it all depend on the business decision, the hardware itself have no problem to provide this feature, just that management may have different idea, disappointed with the ps3 latest update only get a lame facebook link feature and different photo gallery. yawn.gif

you mean if it supports DIVX7 means it knows what is .mkv extension and we can start playing them? hmm.gif

cos even now, we can already play the advance video codecs in the MKV like H264.. it just don't recognize mkv.. so have to remux to mp4.

anyway the real issue is the FAT32 limitation, they can make divx1000 also cannot play those larger 8GB files.. biggrin.gif

I never said FAT was 8GB limitation, its 4GB la..

I was trying to indicate you still can't play those 8GB 1080p movies unless chop/split files (as compared to those smaller 720p, also need to chop but not much)

divx7 officially support mkv container, so if ps3 upgrade their codec to divx 7, mkv will play without need to remux, and also the NTFS support is the other issue with using external hard disk connecting to ps3. ntfs support is tricky because NTFS is own by micro$oft, so there is licensing fee that need to be pay, or MS can just refuse to see license to sony.

Another way is to use media server. I always copy my 8GB files to my PS3's harddisk this way. The PS3"s harddisk is not FAT32, only the external USB drives connected to it must be FAT32, hence the 4GB limitation. biggrin.gif

DiVX is a codec. It can be in MKV or AVI container. The problems with PS3 is that it can't read the MKV header, so regardless of what codec inside, PS3 can't play it. Same reason why PS3 can't play the H264 codec in MKV, but will play it fine when the H264 inside remuxed to MP4 container/header.

Remux king? laugh.gif I passed all the duties to my friend already. Now he's the one downloading, remuxing, etc. He even owns my RS account now. Sometimes I take a peek at his drives and steal 1 or 2 movies. laugh.gif

I'm just focused to BDs now, got no time anymore. blush.gif

Tried that long time ago, your computer OS won't recognize it. Apparently PS3 uses it's own propriety file system format, it's not NTFS.

But disk management software like Partition Magic, etc can recognize it as a harddisk drive, just can't see or access the contents. So you can reformat it to FAT32 or NTFS to use it as normal harddisk. I did that to the original PS3 harddisk when I upgraded the PS3 to 160GB.

I wanna keep the movie in my PS3, don't wanna turn on my PC every time I wanna watch. This usually movies I really love but not yet available on BD, or the existing BD release locked to other regions so I can't buy it. Once I have an 8GB Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back, ripped from HD-broadcast in my PS3. It looked quite good in HD. Again, I'm a geek in a weird way. tongue.gif

Of course, all this talk is because I don't have a dedicated media player. blush.gif

your reply is irrelevant. WDTV had no lan either, until WDTV Live. None of the low end RMVB players have internet connection, yet they play downloaded RMVBs fine.

------------------

back to the Sony - since they mention Divx, AVI format should be ok.

But there is no mention of support for RMVB and MKV. If you download movies/TV series in either of these formats then you're out of luck.

Sorry miss 1 part of explanation... the dloaded AVI file i put in thumb drive...
can it be play?

Example of TV Series..
Heroes, Smallville, CSI, - which is around 350MB

Coz at home i have Sony Bravia KLV-40S550A which has a USB port and it says can play movie...
but it cannot, maybe due to compression differences..
