for beginners you can try use water based paints, safer.
if you dont wan to prime, you can jsut sand it with type1200 or jsut clean it properly using detergent before u paint.
i painted my sd gelgoog using no primer.

but prime makes the paint look nicer if im not mistaken? correct me in im wrong.coz the primed surface will make it easier to blend with the paint thus making nicer colour.?

From my understanding is primer wont actually make the color look nicer.
But it will make ur painting easier.
1. It will make your paint to stick well onto the surface.
2. To make the color uniform. (As sometime, u may need to fill putty adding details, this will create different color onto the part, so more layer will be needed in order to have a same color.)

But due to the primer's price is quite expensive, so most of us don't use primer, seeing that it doesn't really bring much benefit to us.

Hope this answer your question.

Primer i used mainly for 2 things:

1. super minor seamlines or whatever it is.
2. make the paint stick to it better, when u paint.
3. usulaly to check on what parts you haven't touch up or covered.

when u applied primer, you do not want to touch the area already primed. the oil or whatever dust from your air or hands will only hinder you to paint.

imagine u paint on waterproof surface, its very annoying if your paint dont stick. the primer function is primary for beat that.

1.well depending on your thinner:primer ratio, if too thick yeah sometimes the stroke obvious.
2.yup can be thinned to 10:1,
sometimes you dont need it to cover the whole part till white, gray or whatever your primer color is like. Just smooth layers as long as paint sticks. (save $$ and time)

but normally primer i hate to brush. most handpainters hate to paintbrush primer too... we either airbrush or spraycan it. if room not dusty, use the spray type sure smooth.
sometimes i skipped priming,~ lazy
