Reviews, experience if it was a sequesl and public [forum hype]. If GameAxis and Gamespot give it less that 6, that's a crappy one.
Personal experience also matters [hate RPG's coz my bro always hogged em n pwned me when I was young =.=*] |

I usually read Game Weekly (chinese mag) and gamespot. also youtube, gamesfaq, demos would help.
A lot of my games collections (especially PS1/2) are games that i played before on ahem version  |

by reviews i guess, but i also do the old fashion way - walk in a shop, browse, and buy. the best games i bought is through the latter.

I usually go by review/word of mouth. Unless it's part of a franchise I collect, then I bypass all reviews and get it, even if it sucks.
