Langkawi Trip - Duty Free Shopping

Well known for it's Duty Free status, Langkawi is indeed a paradise for people who enjoy alcohol as well as chocolates! However, duty free shops are mostly found in tourist infested areas like Pantai Cenang and Kuah Town. Moving out of those places you are unlikely to find any shops selling cheap liquor and chocolates etc.

There are a few places to choose from, the popular ones will be Wawasan (Kuah), Teoh Soon Huat Supermarket (Kuah), The Zon (Pantai Cenang) and Coco Valley (Pantai Cenang). However, if you are in Pantai Cenang and looking for a drink late at night you could also head to Cenang Duty Free Shopping Centre which opens 16 hours a day!

I didn't exactly compare the prices but alcohol (Hoegaarden) is cheapest at Coco Valley, selling at RM3.50. The Zon sells at at RM3.70 (chilled) whereas other places sell at RM3.90. Any higher than that you should walk out of the shop unless there are no other places to go. It's the same as for liquor like Chivas and Glenfiddich

user posted image
Having said that, chocolates may be cheaper in places where the alcohol are slightly more pricey. So at the end of the day it boils down to your own personal liking. But for me i bought most stuff at the Zon and Coco Valley.

user posted image

For this trip I tried most of the beers on offer, namely Hoegaarden, Corona, Budweiser and Kampai. Didn't bother to try the 'cheap' beers like Carlsberg and Heineken though. Kampai was one of my favourites as it is SWEET! Managed to smuggle two bottles back on top of a Glenfiddich 1L. =P

Langkawi Trip - Breakfast Bar

2nd day at Langkawi!

For my breakfast I headed to this shop called Breakfast Bar which was recommended by one of the websites on Langkawi.

user posted image

The food there was alright, nothing fancy though. Price wise is also acceptable but if you really want to have a full breakfast you need to spend about RM10.

user posted image

Their famous Teh Tarik which was recommended by the same website. The most healthiest Teh Tarik i've ever drank. Totally no sugar one. RM2. A bit over hyped though. @_@

Langkawi Trip - Jetty Point & Dataran Lang

fter my breakfast I drove to the Jetty Point at Kuah Town to catch my boat for the island hopping activity. The journey from Cenang beach to Kuah is about 20-25 minutes depending on which way you take. There are many ways to get to Kuah from Cenang.

user posted image

There are 2 parking lots from you to choose from at the main area. I parked at the one behind the main car park. The charges are really cheap, 50 cents per hour only!

user posted image

Counters are a plentiful here for you to choose your activities from. My island hopping package costed RM31 per person (total 8) and we had a boat to ourselves.

Since all my tickets were settled a day earlier and waiting for my Langkawi friends to arrive, I walked around to do some photoshooting. The wind was blowing slightly hard that day so it is rather pleasant and cooling!

Beras Basah Island (Island Hopping)

We were brought to another nearby jetty to board our speed boat. Our first destination would be Beras Basah Island! The sea was rather choppy at that time and the water kept splashing against our faces. Everybody was soaked even before we reached the island =/

After about 30-40 minutes of boat ride later, we finally arrived at our destination, with our hair pretty much drenched.

user posted image

The beach here is very nice, much better than Tanjung Rhu's (which I will post about it later), though the quality still lacks behind Tioman and Kota Kinabalu. The waters are not that clear as well. But still a lot clearer than Port Dickson, and slightly better than Pangkor.

Shots of fishes! Ikan bilis to be exact!

Sadly behind the scenes.. rubbish were littered everywhere!! Hopefully the authorities will buck up and clean up. =/

Langkawi Trip - Eagle Feeding & Fish Feeding (Island Hopping)

After spending about 1 hour at Pulau Beras Basah, we were off to witness eagle feeding at another nearby island. There's nothing much that can be done here as we only can watch the eagles from faraway. Having a 200mm lens with a 24 megapixel sensor will certainly help a lot in photographing these majestic birds.

user posted image

We watched the birds for about 10 more minutes before departing to our next stop, which is a fish rearing sanctuary. This was not included in our itinerary and had to be specially requested. Entrance fees are RM10 for unsuspecting tourists but we got it for RM7 thanks to our boat operator. You will given fish food pellets after entering. The food is practically useless because the fishes will only respond to real fish food.

Langkawi Trip - Dayang Bunting Island (Island Hopping)

For our final stop for the island hopping session, we headed to Dayang Bunting Island or also popularly known as the Pregnant Maiden Island. There are a lot of websites depicting how this name came about so I won't be going into details.

user posted image
The island, being shaped like a pregnant lady

The main attraction of this island is the Dayang Bunting Lake which was formed after a cave crumbled millions of years ago and rain water began filling up the cavern. It's a good thing that this island was my last stop so i could wash away all the sticky sea water. =P

user posted image

To get to the lake, you'd have to climb up AND down a loooong flight of stairs. People with physical disabilities may have a problem completing this feat. Hence it is advisable to visit Langkawi while you are still fit!

After conquering the stairs you will be greeted by the magnificent view of the lake.

user posted image

The platforms here are rather well built. Tourists are allowed to swim within a safe distance of the lake and life jackets can be rented at RM5 per hour if you can't really swim. It's also my first time swimming at a place so deep without a life jacket!! The last time i swam at a lake was at my National Service stint but that was with a life jacket and me being fully clothed (even with shoes). A very good experience that you will never get if you are staying in urban areas.

Alternatively you could also a rent a paddle boat to tour around the lake. Didn't bother to check out the prices since I was more interested in swimming!

Langkawi Trip - Tanjung Rhu & Four Seasons Resort

After having a good afternoon nap I headed to Tanjung Rhu to witness Langkawi's sunset. Tanjung Rhu is located at the tip of the island and it took me about 30-40 minutes drive to arrive at our destination.

user posted image
Tanjung Rhu public beach

Generally the sand quality of Tanjung Rhu's beach is much poorer compared to that of Cenang. Having said that, one of the Langkawi's best resort is located here, which is none other than Four Seasons Resort. This also marks my first time of resort hopping in Langkawi. =P

As soon as you enter the resorts area, a scenic view will greet you which will certainly make you go 'wow'. No doubt this the best resort in Langkawi if you ask me. Very grand, very nice and exaggerating decorations and expensively exclusive. Pity that the beach sucks. =/ Having said that, those who can afford to stay at places like these certainly did not come for their beaches but to enjoy the resort's facilities and the scenery itself!

And finally.. we reached the beach~

Langkawi Trip - Wonderland Seafood Restaurant

After a long drive back from Tanjung Rhu we headed to Wonderland Seafood which is located in Kuah on my friend's recommendation. They asked us not to go to Roo Tian Restaurant as it will be a rip off. If you have a GPS this restaurant should show up. That's how we managed to find the place. It's just next to the main road, all you need to know is when to turn in.

user posted image

As we arrived quite late (about 9pm), the place was already crowded with people! Thankfully we managed to get seats after waiting for 5-7 minutes. They let us sit at a big table even though there's only 4 of us biggrin.gif

user posted image

Food only arrived 30 minutes later! However, it is well worth the wait. The food is absolutely delicious and reasonably priced.I ordered a Teochew styled steam Siakap, fried egg with oysters, Stir Fried Choi Sum, 2 soft shell crabs and deep fried calamari which totalled up to RM99. It's not exactly cheap but this is price I can get in a decent, not over priced shop back in KL. Maybe its due to the fact that I speak Hokkien...? 2 thumbs up! So my suggestion is, either come really early, make reservations beforehand, or be prepared to wait!

Due to my hungriness, I only managed to take 2 pictures before wolfing in the food!

Langkawi Trip - Cenang Beach (Pantai Cenang)

Cenang Beach, or Pantai Cenang is one of the important landmarks here in Langkawi. If you did not step foot onto this beach you did not come to Langkawi. Okay that's really just my point of view. Anyway, Pantai Cenang is the most tourist heavily infested place in the whole island due to its beautiful beach as well as it's cheap resorts and motels lining along the beach. There also a lot of souvenir shops selling all kinds of stuff to cater for different types of tourist. The Underwater World is also situated here with the duty free haven, i.e The Zon & Coco Valley next to it.

user posted image

Pantai Cenang is really hard to miss since it's only located 5-10 minutes drive away from the airport. You really have no excuse for not visiting this place at least once!

user posted image

The sand here is pretty smooth compared to Tanjung Rhu and it get's comfortably cold at night when you sit by the beach and enjoy a drink.

user posted image

The waters isn't exactly clear but it's good enough for me. Beware of jellyfishes though! I almost swam right into one! yawn.gif

user posted image

Once the sun sets, a new side of Pantai Cenang awakes as most restaurants start to do their business and tourists will throng the streets for some shopping. Some shops also sell cap openers at RM1 for your beer which are designed as key chains. Do drop by and buy one instead of using a spoon or your teeth to open that bottle of Carlsberg.

There are 3 sections in this place, but the main attraction would be the penguins in my opinion.

user posted image

The first section would be going through an area where they showcase huge aquariums of fresh water fish and some birds.

user posted image

Next up is the Artic section whereby the penguins are displayed. They are REALLY adorable!

Langkawi Trip - Wan Thai Restaurant

I believe this restaurant needs further mentioning. Having won so many accolades in the past, this restaurant is a MUST TRY in Langkawi. Serving one of the best Thai food I've ever tasted in my life, I almost actually missed this place if not for making a wrong turn inside Kuah Town.

drive around langkawi a? that depends what is your definition of round la. some roads quite curvy one.. so if your passengers are prone to car sickness be careful lor

for datai bay if possible try to sneak in in their resorts la. the datai was very strict but i managed to sneak in the andaman tongue.gif will post about it later. otherwise the only choice of beach is before the resorts.

true also. i 4d 3n also a bit rush cause i got lost during my way to the air hangat hot springs. all the island stuff usually start at 9 la.. and trust me.. it's impossible to get up at 7am laugh.gif 2nd day can la.. 3rd - 4th day onwards a bit impossible..

from google map is pantai kok nearer la. 22km nia from 4 points by sheraton to the datai, but 30km from four seasons tanjung rhu to the datai.

i total drove 400km plus leh..i even went to gunung raya... you really underestimate liao..haha...

although it's 30km but your average will probably be 60 only...if you are lucky can maintain 80.. but once you reach datai it's down to 20-40 for few km d..

Added on February 16, 2012, 5:00 pmdatai go from pantai cenang better..it's really really at the top left corner of langkawi d...
