Ok,is about my mum.The problem is that i dont know whats going on with her.My father told me that my mum started to behave weirdly since 3rd or 4th september and at the very 1st night, midnight,my mum ran out from my house and my father had to stop her with the help of my grandfather. My father took her to the doctor but the doctor just gave my mum some medicine without saying much. She was kind of scare when someone approach her and she cried a lot during the 1st and 2nd day.Now her condition is a bit better but her emotion still not stable. She doesnt know what she has to do after she wakes up in the morning and sometimes she asks weird questions which we all dont know how to respond to her.She also cant make any decisions, like when we want to take her out,she cant decide. My brother said that it is depression but im still having doubt with that.Is it really depression??

Has anybody close to her died, anything done that's caused her to feel supremely sad or anything that's slapped her emotions terribly? If it happens out of the sudden with no reason, get your family doc to recommend help.
When you said, your mom, i thought "menopause" but then as you described the symptoms, it sounded a bit extreme. Menopause does cause mental health issues but yours sounds, WHOA! |

I think it's too early to decide whether it's mental disorder or just stress.
So before visiting those tanjung rambut centre, please visit a psychiatrist. Penang Adventist Hospital 465, Burma Road, 10350 Pulau Pinang, Telephone: Tel: (604) 222-7200 Fax: (604) 226-3366 |

Yup. Maybe it's onset of dementia.
Symptoms of dementia include -memory loss, particularly of recent events. This may not be severe at first but is likely to become progressively worse. -problems finding the right words for what you want to say. -feel increasingly disorientated, such as not recognising familiar streets and becoming confused about the time of day. This could cause you to get up in the middle of the night wanting to go out. -poor judgement, for example dressing inappropriately for the weather or being unaware of dangerous situations. -become withdrawn, prone to fits of temper, or feel anxious and depressed. -have trouble thinking clearly and doing practical tasks that you used to do easily. But the exact reason can only be found out after diagnosis. Change the doctor ur mom used to visit. Here is a list of hospitals where psyshiatrists are available : Government Hospitals Hospital Kuala Lumpur Jalan Pahang 50586 Kuala Lumpur Tel: 03-26155555 Fax: 03-26989845 Hospital Putrajaya Pusat Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan Presinct 7 62250 Putrajaya Wilayah Persekutuan Tel: 03-83124200 Fax: 03-88880137 Hospital Serdang Jalan Puchong 43000 Serdang Selangor Tel: 03-89475555 Fax: 03-89475050 Hospital Selayang Lebuhraya Selayang Kepong 68100 Batu Caves Selangor Tel: 03-6367788/61203233 Fax: 03-61377097 Hospital Tuanku Fauziah 01000 Kangar Perlis Tel: 04-9763333 Fax: 04-9767237 Hospital Alor Setar 05100 Alor Setar Kedah Darul Aman Tel: 04-7303333 Fax: 7303770/7323770 Hospital Pulau Pinang Jalan Residensi 10450 Pulau Pinang Tel: 04-2293333 Fax: 04-2281737 Hospital Ipoh Jalan Hospital 30990 Ipoh Perak Darul Ridzuan Tel: 05-2533333 Fax: 05-2531541 Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah 41200 Klang Selangor Darul Ehsan Tel: 03-33757000 Fax: 03-33749557 Hospital Tuanku Jaafar Jalan Rasah 703000Seremban Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus Tel: 06-7623333/7684000 Fax: 06-7625771 Hospital Melaka Jalan Mufti Haji Khalil 75400 Melaka Tel: 06-2822344 Fax: 06-2841590 Hospital Sultanah Aminah 80100 Johor Baru Johor Darul Tazim Tel: 07-2231666 Fax: 07-2242694 Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan Jalan Air Putih 25100 Kuantan Pahang Darul Makmur Tel: 09-5133333/5572222 Fax: 09-5142712 Hospital Kuala Terengganu 20400 Kuala Terengganu Terengganu Darul Iman Tel: 09-6813333/6813120 Fax: 09-6813099 Hospital Raja Perenpuan Zainab II Jalan Hospital 15000 Kota Baru Kelantan Darul Naim Tel: 09-7485533 Fax: 09-7486951 Hospital Queen Elizabeth 888586 Kota Kinabalu Sabah Tel: 088-218166 Fax: 088-211999 Hospital Umum Sarawak Jalan Tuan Ahmad Zaidi Adruce 93586 Kuching Sarawak Tel: 082-276666 Fax: 082-611124 Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang P.O. If she became like that overnight, u better bring her to see a medical specialist ASAP. Might be some kind of brain infection. |

QUOTE(euphoria88 @ Oct 31 2009, 02:34 PM) LOL LOL LOL LOL Seriously stop talking as if you know everything. Do you know why drugs exist to cure mental disorders, SURPRISE SURPRISE because sometimes it can be caused by biological reasons. Enlargement in certain ventricles in brain (commonly found during schizophrenia), or in the case of depression, neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin show signs of reduced activity. And also for your information, psychological disorders can and ARE treated as medical disorders as well. So until you know what you're talking about, stop acting as if you know the best and putting other people down. Just because you CAME ACROSS SOMETHING WHILE SEARCHING FOR PORN does not qualify you to put others down. Have a nice day |

A sudden change in personality may be delirium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delirium) which may in turn be caused by meningitis or other underlying diseases such as an acute loss of water, hence I asked about the time frame of the change in personality. May I ask how did you conclude that it is a psychological illness and not a medical illness? What was the basis of the differential? i think "xin li yi sheng" is psychologist. where they concentrate more on how the patient behave, think and so on by counselling and psychotherapy. psychiatrist can prescribe medicines and is a medical doctor.
her problem sounds more like psychological problems than biological problems. the psychiatrist should be able to diagnose what the problem is with her. there are many type of mental disorders. This post has been edited by munkeyflo: Oct 31 2009, 10:27 PM |

always rule out possible organic causes before jump into the psychiatric diseases... especially when comes to elderly and acute onset of symptoms...
suggest u to go general hospital where psychiatric, medical and neuromedical speciality is available... i believe the emergency department of the hospital will dispose her according to the department which is right for her. bring her to the hospital and let the doctors do the dignosing part... no point of teka teki here wat is ts's mother having.. |

The best place to get this checked out is a HKL. Go to the psych building - consultation and pharmacy on ground floor and wards upstairs. It's going to be a hassle since its a government hospital hence the doctors there have a schedule for seeing patients. The upside is that the medicine is free. And trust me psych medication can cost a bomb.
Another reason is that the HKL is probably the best place especially if your mum needs to be admitted. Having your mum in a psych ward is actually important for the doctors to really monitor her. Plus, if she is going to be put on medication it won't hurt to make sure she does not have an adverse reaction to it. Don't procrastinate. Don't look at it as abandoning a parent. If she needs help then you should do what is in her best interests not to make you feel better. If you go to HKL, the head I think is Dr Salina (?). If you insist on going to private hospitals then perhaps try Dr Rabin Gonzaga at his clinics at either Gleneagles or Prince Court. If you are near PJ then perhaps you can see Dr Daniel in Pantai Medical. |

With the symptoms i think would be difficult to leave her in a psych ward. If you have to make sure you are with her 24/7. If she's afraid seeing friends & relative i cannot imagine strangers.
What kind of psychiatrist would say nothing after attending a patient? It can be some event that happened that you are not aware of it can be physical/mental illness or even old-age dementia or combinations. Maybe try hypnotism to find out more clue. Ok,it is not bcoz of dementia or brain infection,my mom was diagnosed with depression.Could anyone with experience pls help??She doesnt want to listen to all the advice. She feels that everyone hates her and she blames herself for all the things she did in the past.In fact,we never blame her for anything.I am completely out of idea on how to treat her.

Psychiatrist should be able to help. I think need to take some happy pills to balance out the chemicals inside the brain, but watch out for some side effects. The doctor should be able to explain in details.
You need to take extra care, we don't know how serious the case is. |

QUOTE(Agent 45 @ Jan 12 2010, 09:51 PM) Ok,it is not bcoz of dementia or brain infection,my mom was diagnosed with depression.Could anyone with experience pls help??She doesnt want to listen to all the advice. She feels that everyone hates her and she blames herself for all the things she did in the past.In fact,we never blame her for anything.I am completely out of idea on how to treat her. Since your mum has been diagnosed as depression, then let us stick to that. If you don't know already, by 2020 depression is projected to be the 2nd largest contributor to the global burden of disease, after heart disease. Please make sure you bring your mother to see a psychiatrist, not a general practisioner. You can't treat her, but you can give support. Make sure she takes her treatment regularly, encourage her to take part in family activities, and take good care of her that she should not and will not harm herself. Attempted suicide is very common in depression. If you see that her condition is worsening even with oral treatment, she might need electro convulsive therapy. ECT is safe, don't worry. The prognosis is good, eventhough the effect might not be lasting. |

Depression can take its toll not only on the sufferer, but on their close friends and family as well. Other forumers are right to say she needs to see a psychiatrist and she needs to take her meds. The most important thing you can do for her is to be patient and give her support. Actly, this is just about all you can do. Its something she has to deal with herself. Some days will be harder than others. But when things get tough, just remember to take it one day at a time. Wish you and your family the best, ts.
