Iy you have been following the separate Pana plasma display thread,, the V20 has issues with 50Hz signal from Astro-B
*
V20 has same problem with normal Astro? I would have thought this higher end model has less problem than the lower U and X.

Saw an 50" LG Plasma of a few years old. The picture quality of normal Astro SD program was the very best I seen. Definitely much better than the latest Panasonic 50X, Samsung PS50C6500. How could that be?

Its strange seeing so many ppl going for korean brands and not japanese? Is the quality control ok?
*
I also always ask that question myself. how reliable are the Korean?

From my own observation, I think the Korean has the 'look' & 'features' department covered. Their refrigerator, washing machine, cars look good and in many cases, even better than the Japanese. Plus often with more features and more value-for-money. But when I looked closer, press this and pull that, I find their quality don't seem as durable and good as the Japanese so I have my doubt. So I still stick with the Japanese to be on the safe side. I look at the inconvenience to get them repair should thing breaks, even if they are free under warranty because my time are definitely not free.

Hi guys, can anyone please recommend me a new LCD/LED tv for watching dvds and Astro, budget loosely 5k. There are just too many in the market, and its difficult cause i might not know all the specs and i dont want ending up buying an old model or one that's inferior to current performance standards. Thanks in advance!  smile.gif

You should know, for watching normal Astro, the picture quality on CRT is much much much better than on HDTV but of course, small size.

Many people with existing CRT mistakenly think normal Astro on big screen is nice when the reverse is true. My advise is for those with existing CRT.

LCD got better black than Plasma? I must have been sleeping all these years LOL.

You have to be more specific in what you said. There are pro and con with either type.

it seems that Malaysian prefers LCD whereas foreigner prefers Plasma. While this survey is about 3D, the same probably holds true for 2D.

*
Are your wall make of Tofu? If not, it shouldn't be a problem. Instead what I worried about is heat.

FYI, a 50" Plasma weight less than a 29" CRT.

I am wrecking my brain on this.

I always planned for a 55" LED TV for my new AV room - either Samsung or Sharp. But the Samsung 63" Plasma TV is indeed a big temptation given the size and supposedly better quality picture of plasma TV, and of course the attractive price that comes with it.

But was told Plasma does not last as long as LED.

Would appreciate Sifus' advice on which is better LED or Plasma.

Don't worry over nothing. Furthermore after 5 years, with the technology advancing & price dropping so fast, you may well be looking for an excuse to get rid of it anyway.

Sure LED will last longer. Say......20 years vs 15 years for Plasma? At that rate, does it really matter how long those things last? Like I say, stop worrying over something that is not important in real life.

Now here's a twist for you. Sharp said their LCD panel can last as long as Plasma. So what have you got to worry about?

for me personally, i feel led colour are much better, plus the 100hz motion flow thingy, it feels like new experience of watching movie. drool.gif

TS should spend more time testing both and see which one suited his viewing pleasure.
*
It also depends on your viewing room's ambient light. In brightly lighted showroom, the LED will look better because of higher light intensity emitted. In dimmer lighted environment of a typical house, the Plasma will look better.

LED also can dimmer the light, they call it energy saving. O.o
when watching at night with all the light off, i put at medium, otherwise it was too bright till my eye hurts..
*
For watching movies at home.

If you are not going to use the higher brightness of LED by turning it down to Plasma level, then why pay more money for something you are not going to use? Why not just save your money and get the Plasma?

^what maintenance fee?

I think he is referring to the higher power consumption of Plasma vs LCD. I am not sure I am calculating it right but here I go....

Panasonic 42" Plasma vs LCD

Plasma uses 230W. 5 hours use 1.15KW @ 30 sen/KW(?). RM0.35 or less
LCD uses 140W. 5 hours use 0.7KW or RM0.21 fixed.

No, I don't think I will lose any sleep over this higher 'maintenance fee'.

True. But I don't like the picture quality of LCD nor can I stand the glare of LED so I wouldn't bother switching them on. So what to do?

i used to reject plasma for the same reason.  But I'm totally reversed now after seeing the Pana P42V20K surface..

LED is not glaring at all if you look at LG's LE5500

so, yeah..choices are there now!
*
Other option is to dim the light, pull the curtain and put on some rear ambient lights. And yes, that's my No.1 complaint of Plasma as well.

my cousin keep telling to to buy the panasonic plasma v series (roughly rm5500) but sunday i went to desa home theater doing promo. The salesman keep pursude me to get lg led 47" 7500 (which is promo price RM5300).

He told me why get plasma is back end technology...will obsolete in 2 yrs for lcd n plasma...with life span
he told me LED no life span and energy saving...better techno...

i dunno which to choose? or any of u sifu have better suggestion?
*
Don't listen to those idiot salesman. Some people love LED. Some people love Plasma and coincidentally, most Western consumer and reviewers love Plasma's picture so may be all Westerner like obsolete technology? Go figure.

seriously, the pana V series don't have that reflection ghost anymore...

Now, between  50inch v series and lg LED 47" le7500(or LE5500),  the obvious comparison for noob like is are :
1.  Pana V couldn't play mkv files straight from USB so got to buy a player (It has DLNA & LAN Port though, so no sure if we could stream the movie directly from our laptop/PC?).
2.  is energy saving a big factor

On the other hand, I love the Pana V's colour (i've seen a side by side comparo between plasma, LED, LCD from Panasonic) and its price is cheaper than LED ..  smile.gif so, let's see what other comments from the sifus here got to give..
*
Pana V uses 415W
Sony may be 115W
Difference of 300W

5 hrs usage difference ix 5x300=1.5KW or 35sen difference?

So you have to ask yourself whether a saving of 35 sen extra per night is worth the higher price of Sony. Since you said you love the Plasma's color, is the color worth an extra of 35 sen per night? Only you can answer that question yourself.

As for playing of mkv files. If you are already paying so much for TV, then you must seriously consider a dedicated media player. I was told those built-in into TV are not very good.
