Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster here. Went to P Lal last week and got myself a pair of Loake Lifestyle Chukka Boots in brown. Totally love 'em. Next, targeting a pair of monk strap derbies. I'd like to ask: 1) any special care for leather soles (other than the usual shoe cream regime) 2) how can the leather soles be replaced? I understand that there are no Goodyear welting machines in Malaysia and sending them to Loake in the UK is rather expensive 3) would you recommended putting in rubber soles (by say, the cobbler at ikano) before first wear? Thank you for your feedback and responses. DM118 |

Thank you for your feedback and responses. DM118 1) None. Don't put any thing on them, even creme. You risk softening them which increases wear. If it gets soaking wet, put the shoes on their sides and leave them to dry naturally (not in the sun!) for at least a day. 2) You don't need a Goodyear welting machine to replace the sole. You just need it if you need to replace the welt, which Loake may or may not do as part of their recrafting service. That being said, I don't know where you can do a resoling in Malaysia. Mr Minit claims they can do it and showed me a nice piece of JR outsoling. Resoling can either be done by hand or by using a machine that I believe is called a curved needle stitcher. 3) I did on my Loake. Now the original rubber heel toplift is almost worn, I plan to replace the toplift and get them to peel off the rubber topy. I reckon I've saved myself 1 recrafting. Is it worth it? Don't know. Ask me in 5 years. |
