AFAIK,

Dolby Atmos codecs in a Bd is a dedicated channel - kinda like 7.1 but for de overhead speakers as well.. so technically - it should sound a lot more discrete [better] than de DSP's from an avr..
But frm my experience, going from 5 to 7 is not tat life-changing so l'd take atmos wif a large ladling of salt.. biggrin.gif

My 2 cts la .. othrs will differ

those downloaded mkv or whatsoever format still comes with AC3 5.1 (Dolby Digital 5.1)
no streaming or downloaded material will use PCM/LPCM as it take up huge bandwidth, so you will still be using a very standard surround mixes by either Dolby/DTS  icon_rolleyes.gif

also, for someone mentioning Dolby Atmos / DTS:X / AURO 3D as additional discrete audio channel, that is incorrect, as the new format is mixed using an object based mix and the sound output will depend on how many speakers you installed in your system and not like if you don't have rear speakers then the rear sound will go missing

Try go to those showroom with Atmos setup and listen by yourself then only decide if you can here the different.  icon_rolleyes.gif

No,

It wont go missing .. if no atmos its stil dolby tru hd..
U are prrbly rite - l am not intrstd in new audio formats - so l only 'skimmed' thru..

What is the reason for 5.1.2 better?
*
Its individual preference.. thou' l suspect , eventually all new AVR's will come with ATMOS [ New DTS-equivalent, too ??? ] n l also see tat it will be customisable - meaning .. you can wire it up or not [ just straight 5.1/7.1 ]

I personally dont hear much diff in de theaters ATMOS presentation vis-a-vis regular surround but then its just me..

I would recommend you try out first before deciding as buying/setting up such a system is not cheap or easy unless you really want it..

I tink if ur rcvr is not ATMOS then u r getting tru hd only.. its not enhanced in anyway - its bckwrd compatible .. but mixed into de rear surrs.. kinda like if you hv 5.1 but ur disc is 7.1 - u get d 4 surr channels mixed into 2..

Yup I understand but still, the sound is simply amazing.
*
Hence to me..

How much more can ATMOS add to de overall 5.1/7.1 experience or to be more exact - is it worth de xtra cost/hassle to add de xtra spkrs wif just de 5.1/7.1 experience?? Ask yourself tat question when/if u wanna upgrd just for ATMOS sake..

I tink if you are starting to plan for a dedicated room, then only consider ATMOS - othr than tat - its just too much hassle for just a little bit more..

That's the thing. I am moving to a new house which I will use the family area as a home theater room. So no issue having a speaker on the ceiling. In fact I think possible more room on the ceiling rather additional side speakers. Just wondering which is the better option. Anyone knows how roughly the cost for Monitor Audio CT265 or Monitor Audio Silver 1/2?
*
Then,

I ll consider 7.2.2 or even 7.4.2 - remember you will need amplification for de xtra channels [ n not all avrs provide it, maybe nxt genre sets might.. ; so need to consider tat too ]
Oso u dont have to go ceiling spkrs ; height/diffuse channels are ATMOS compliant too [ proper ceiling spkrs would need proper dual driver and tis is harder to fix up on a plaster ceiling ; if its me, lll go height/diffuse channels with maybe, satts - it wont be playing all de time anyway.. ]

O ya.. After all is said n done, in a HT.. a decent sub [or 2] has more impact then 4/6/8 ceiling spkrs..

could you pls clarify on the underlined part? are you depending on the plaster ceiling to fully support the weight on the speakers?
having the same length is moot because AVR/prepro has speaker distance and spl adjustment.... unless you're using pure direct signal on hifi components with zero processing.

I am speaking solely from a DIY perspective .. not an issue if your project is done by pros ...

But... Personally, I prefer side wall mounting over ceiling - even if its done by somebody else..

Actually do we really need good spk for atmos. The atmos spk design is like car stereo spk been thinking of getting the car spk n try and see whether got difference
*
Not a bad idea..

Other than tonal signature and power-hungry [ some is 4 ohm ; if not mistaken ] .. Pros are tat car speakers are actually easier to ceiling mount cos of its design ; and its an effects channel ; meaning it will be utilised maybe 10% of de time and mainly for bangs/whoosh/booms..

Me - lll still get a cheap-used-smallish-bkshlv n wall-mt it n point it away for its ambience effect..

Sometimes I really doubt on quality of Yamaha hardware. My whole AVR cannot power on just about 5 months into use. I only use like 2 times per week and dead just like that. Luckily under warranty. Not sure how long it will last

Model pls..

So l can avoid..

Sori,

Not trying to rub salt on de wound.. If I were u, l'd be pissed to hi-heaven.. to me durability [n longevity] is utmost in my criteria - to me other features are secondary .. I want long lasting gear.. not temperamental [even if it is gifted ] ones..
After saying tat - in all my years of playing wif HT, marantzs still hold dear.. [touch wood] no prblms wif all 3 models tat l hv used..

So far I had pioneer before yamaha. Pioneer also is extremely long lasting. Will see what to try once atmos and DTS X is settle down
*
So far..

In all my readings, Marantz n Pioneer seems to make 'more' durable AVR's - it might not be de best but they hv less problems..

Haha,

I ll throw in my opinion :
I prefer Marantz or Pioneer - not so much sound wise [ to me, avrs only change de sonic structure so much - change spkrs, better..] but they last [ in my experience, Marantz/Pioneers make much more durable gear.. But then again, if u upgrd often, then not an issue .. I guess..

Tq for all opinion. My last avr is yamaha ,maybe this time want try Marantz, hopefully it last forever hehe
Currently just want add another pair surround speaker to complete 7.1.
Marantz sr 5008 just dont support hdmi 2.0 , yamaha 677 already support but don't think it make any difference for now. Hopefully still got stock at Desa tomorrow or any other place can give better price for  Marantz sr 5008 ?
*
Haha,

Unfortunately, durability is not a sought after feature - or maybe its difficult to gather info on tis as you need to keep/use for 'so long' first and tat takes 'time' .. Again my experience wif 3 diff models of Marantz avrs were very good - first 2 were upgrdd aftr about 4 year use .. de last 7002 is ard 6/7 years and l m still using it [No problems] ..

I saw Harvey Norman selling NS-51 speakers set and RX-V479 for RM2799, without subwoofer. Is this Yamaha speaker any good compare to Pioneer Andrew Jones speaker set? Thanks
*
I would guess you would be the best judge to its prowess.. any other comments are best considered 'opinions' ..
If you cant hear any difference, then go for de cheapest..

LOL,

All tis talk of 'reviewed spkrs' - if you buy based on tis then its equivalent of buying 'blind'
Listen first before you decide..
