Reason being, thief is clever enough to maintain an escape plan with the platform entry wide open, and relying on the all-to-familiar Malaysian "who cares as long as it does not involves me" attitude to execute his theft. The victim left himself wide open to things like these especially at areas like these where there are mobs of crowd abound and not particularly paying attention to his surroundings and the people around him.
*Personal note: Even when it seems like my eyeballs are stuck playing games on my iPhone, i kept vigil on the things happenings on around me or place myselfin locations where I can easily manouver to give chase to perps. For example, when I board the RapidKL bus, I dont join in the uncivilised, herds-of-animals-rush towards the bus door, I let these selfish folks(because they want to get seats, even though the FREAKING BUS IS EMPTY TO BEGIN WITH!) pass me and board the bus last. My sanity is preserved plus I get to observe how laboratory rats act when they are released out of their cages as they scramble towards the sole exit. Perfectly emulated, but just executed by these selfish humans*
Victim is smart enough to keep his distance becauseof the possibility of mortal woundingand also he knows no one will going to help him, again, probably from the previous experience of which he observes how Malaysians react in such situation like these. The only time Malaysians would "seem" to be caring and helpful, is when there is a car or nasty incident on the public roads, and they "seem" to slow down their vehicles approaching the scene, but only to RUBBERNECK to see what's going on , or in the local layman term, "kaypoh". This results in massive traffic jams that is unnecessary and senseless. Personally to me, if you're not helping then GTFO on your way, and don't hinder those who are there to offer their assistance!
The thief is probably smart enough to realize that with a DS in his hands as the result of his thievery, that he could not operate, or figure out how to operate, and make use of the DS without substantial amount of knowledge on the device, and the additional cost of purchasing games for it (if he is a thief with a conscience, which in this case he "seems" like he is, with him returning the DS and all!) or finding out the know-how on how to pirate his way for the games, in which, judging from his raggedy-escape-plan-on-a-bike, that suggest his backward-mindedness of a typical rempit. These bullet-points probably flash through his mind during his first snatch of the loot from the victim's hands until his realisation of what he have stolen later on.
Moral of the story:

1. Keep an eye out on surrounding, only let your guard down when you know you have your back covered; ie with friends & not alone, or positioning yourself in location where it is easy to corner the perp if it happens.
2. "Malaysians are caring" mantra is bullcrap in every essence and meaning. They probably would do the "caring thing" if that caring act benefits them, and make it look like they "care" which is an added bonus. In the case of RUBBERNECKING in an accident while on public road, the benefit here is "I get to see a gory show for free", and the end result is "the massive traffic jam". Caring or even the thought of helping the victims of the road accident? Out of the motorized electric-powered car windows, folks!

Pardon the long deduction, my CSI Junior Detective Kit just arrived in the mail today. And from these long paragraphs, you know how "high" I hold Malaysians in regards to their civic and moral consciousness and attitude towards others.
